Should look a lot like last year with Elliott winning

Indy roval was probably the first road course race, outside of last year's Glen, where Elliott and Larson both had top 3 cars. With Bowman running solidly in the top 10, and with how fast Larson and Elliott have been, it seems like their road course program is back.

I'm predicting a pretty uneventful Elliott win, and hopefully a quiet error free race for the 5.

I love this track, always enjoyed how fast it feels for a road course.

Holy ****. I just watched last year's race to prepare for this weekend. What a race! I had forgotten that McDowell was a huge part of last year. Wow. Gonna be a good one this weekend!

I'm actually with you there. I truly hope Chase gets it done here so that NASCAR doesn't have to give him "the Earnhardt plate" next week. :XXROFL:And, yes, I know there are no longer restrictor plates.

Buescher repeated....I truly believe McDowell certainly could. Watkins Glen is more "swoopy" and fast and less technical than Indianapolis, that certainly plays into the hands of the bigger teams. But hey, that's what everyone said about Michigan and Buescher still won.

I thought this race last year was actually great and at its best when they started out under wet and changing conditions. The track kinda locked down once it all dried out. So go figure the forecast looks bone dry for this weekend.

Chase is a really solid plate racer who seems to always been in the mix, if he doesn't get wrecked. If he doesn't win Watkins Glen (which he's kind of due for a W there), he'll have a shot at Daytona.

Side note, I hate the final race of the regular season being such a crap shoot superspeedway race. Id rather just an ordinary speedway race tbh.

With cup going back to the oval next year at Indy, having the Brickyard be the final regular season race would be monumental, imo.

Goodyear Fast Facts — Watkins Glen

NASCAR Cup Series — Race No. 25 – 90 laps / 221 miles Watkins Glen International (2.454-mile road course) – Watkins Glen, N.Y.
Fast Facts for August 19-20, 2023

Tire: Goodyear Eagle 18-inch Road Course Radials

Set limits: Cup: 1 set for practice, 1 set for qualifying and 6 sets for the race (5 race sets plus 1 set transferred from qualifying)

Tire Codes: Left-Front/Right-Rear: D-5212; Right-Front/Left-Rear: D-5213

Tire Circumference: 2,275 mm (89.57 in.)

Minimum Recommended Inflation: Left Front — 26 psi; Right Front — 24 psi; Left Rear — 21 psi; Right Rear — 21 psi

Storyline – Teams on consistent tire set-up as they tackle high speed Watkins Glen: The NASCAR Cup circuit visits Watkins Glen International this weekend, making it back-to-back road course races for the series. Among the left-right courses these teams run on, Watkins Glen is on the more high speed and less technical end of the spectrum. With the advent of the Next Gen car, Goodyear has been able to consolidate its tire set-ups and run the same combination on all road courses. The Watkins Glen race will be the fifth Cup race on these two Goodyear tire codes this season, giving teams the ability to work from their well established notebooks.

“Because of Watkins Glen’s configuration and the fact that it was repaved as recently as 2016, cars carry a lot of sustained speeds on this course,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing. “In tuning the tire to the track, teams have an advantage in that they are well familiar with the set-up we will be running this week. After debuting at COTA earlier this season, Cup teams have been on this tire four times in 2023, including last week at Indy. That should help teams get up to speed quickly at The Glen.“

Notes – Cup teams on standard road course tire set-up at Watkins Glen: Being on 18-inch bead diameter tires, NASCAR Cup teams will run a different tire set-up than those in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Watkins Glen this week . . . this is a different tire set-up than these teams ran at The Glen last year, featuring a compound change to give the cars more grip and introduce more tire wear and fall-off in lap times over the course of a run . . . this tire set-up has already been run at Circuit of The Americas, Sonoma, Chicago and Indianapolis this season . . . with this 18-inch tire, and its lower profile sidewall, NASCAR Cup cars will not run inner liners in their tires.

Wet Weather Tires – Goodyear brings white-lettered “wets” to The Glen: Goodyear will bring its 18-inch wet weather radials to Watkins Glen for use by teams in the NASCAR Cup Series, should NASCAR decide that conditions warrant . . . the tread pattern on this tire is based on Goodyear’s Eagle Supercar 3 consumer tire . . . NASCAR Cup teams last ran a wet weather tire in competition Chicago street course last month . . . in addition to the obvious difference of a tread pattern versus Goodyear’s dry weather “slick” tires, the “Goodyear” and “Eagle” lettering on the sidewalls of the wet weather tires is white, not the standard yellow.

I am not sure if AJ Allmendinger's wife has had the baby yet or not. She is past due and was on baby watch this past weekend. It could possibly effect his Watkins Glenn weekend availability.

Dunno. The game is different this year. A Ford won last week. Toyota is back on the road courses. Chasey has some work to do....and ya probably need to get your boy to bed before 4 am with a Double presser first thing in the morning.

What double presser for Larson?

I don't think she has had the baby yet but how about she has the baby within the next day or so and a motivated AJ wins at the Glen?

I read somewhere that baby Allmendinger was due on Aug 7th, so it has to happen soon.

A lot of drama for the 9/5 this weekend lol.

It's interesting. Elliott gets around here better than anyone else. He's also had the best car here like 4 seasons in a row, but hadn't won in a few years. In contrast, Larson won the last two races, and while in 2021, he had comparible long run pace, he hasn't been as fast.

On one hand, Elliott seems due for a win here. On the other hand, he also seems due for not having the fastest car. And with the points drama, and the 9/5 drama from last year, things could get pretty interesting.

With Elliott and Larson running the two fastest laps at Indy last week, HMS' road course program seems to be coming back into power, and with Elliott and Larson being the two most frequent winners here, good chance we get a cleaner version of last year.

And for Chase fans....yeah, they're both over it ;) and no, Larson learned his lesson and will race Chase "like a teammate"

This sport has proven time and again....nobody is owed anything. Lots of chatter on NASCAR Radio this week ensuring a Chasey win. Don't buy it.
