Calling for 60% chance during the timeframe of the race at Indy, if he starts the race at Indy he cant have a relief driver so they would have to park it. Lot of money would be wasted. If its raining at the start and the radar looks set in will they have a backup driver and if so, who?

They said a long time ago it would be Tony Kanaan. This is a well thought out process, its not like they would pull someone out of the stands

Nolan Siegel, if anyone at all.

The way the rule is now worded is that only those who participated in P&Q are eligible for the fill-in pool. McLaren had been looking for an exception and, at least so far, it doesn’t appear they’re going to get it.

No shiit? I didnt see who they would have so thats why I asked. I understand how this works but thanks for answering my question on who it is

Ah, thanks for that clarification on the rule, I heard Siegel was gonna be in the stands Sunday

I am not the least bit surprised. My bold prediction is that Kyle Larson will win the double or both the 500 and the 600.

But the God's ain't having it and they are fighting me. They have had it out for me for the last six or seven years and the sumbitchs even shut down the entire Yahoo fantasy league back in the day in their vendetta against me.

Everybody's that was here during those special times had to remember those wonderful years. I was the humble peoples champion and everybody was so happy.

It wasn't my fault that some of the competitors wanted to become my groupies and they wives and sisters was always calling out my name at the most intense moments. I told them to be at least be a little more discreet but Greg can't do everything, and they wouldn't stop.

I will be okay but the racing God's and illuminati shouldn't drag Larson or the fans into all this just because they want to stop me.

I didn't think a relief driver can be used if Larson leaves the car. The car is scored by laps run with Larson driving. If Larson never is in the car a relief driver can be used? Has that changed?

Siegel would have to start, if not it gets parked when Larson gets out

Seems like Rick Hendrick could just instruct Nascar to give Larson a waiver that would allow him to remain eligible for the Cup Championship and keep Larson in Indianapolis as long as needed.

He’s already playoff eligible? I’d say just keep him in Indy and put Harv in the 5

It sure would be nice if the sanctioning bodies could see the forest for the trees and realize what a PR and marketing coup doing the double is for BOTH series and stop with the silly rules and conflicting schedules and make this all easier, not harder. The rule about not being able to put a relief driver in serves absolutely no purpose and benefits no one. Come on Roger and Jim, I KNOW you can do better than this nickel- dime BS.

Years ago Nascar made it impossible to run both races with their scheduling. Nascar moved the time so that it is possible to run both races if everything falls into place. It's a bit early to be wringing hands about the weather.

He still needs to earn playoff points and There's a lot of Larson fans that paid to see him race in Charlotte on Sunday, thats his main focus as it should be.

Thats an Indy car rule, not sure how NASCAR and Jim figure in to this.

Everyone needs to calm down, the race is still very likely. Sunday is a long way out from a forecasting perspective. Also, the green flag drops at 12:45 and storms usually spike around 5 PM.

If anything we can move it up to a noon start

They are calling for train before the race starts, it may or may not happen but this conversation is what will be done if they run in to that scenario

Another what if:

If Larson were to win the 500 (very unlikely, I realize), would it be possible to do all of the post-race winner stuff and still make it for the green flag at Charlotte?

Chug some milk and give them a promise to return on monday
I assume the Monday night post race banquet is still the thing after the 500. But my guess is a win would be at least an hour of photos, handshakes, back slaps etc immediately after the race.

But I would agree and I think from a time standpoint it can be done.

I'm sure they would understand and the world would be watching this event unfold, it would be incredible for everyone involved.

Right, if Larson is pulled mid-race they can’t use a relief driver. Not sure how recent that rule change is, but that didn’t use to be the case.

If the race doesn’t start at all and he leaves for Charlotte they can put a different driver in there, it just has to be someone who ran over the past week’s sessions, which is only Siegel at this point. The team had planned for that to be TK, but they’ll have to hope the series bends the rules a bit and lets him run for 30 laps or so on Thursday.

It is kinda unfortunate this wasn’t entirely fleshed out better beforehand. If the backup can’t be TK, I don’t know how interested Hendrick would be in running the car at all, since they’re the ones funding it after all. I doubt Rick, Jeff, or anyone at HendrickCars.com had any idea who Siegel was before Sunday. I could just see the entry being pulled, unless it’s delayed entirely to Monday and Larson can make it back.

This is from the Official Indycar site. 3rd bullet down. :idunno:

They've already said that if he wins the 500 it would be a very abbreviated victory lane so that he could make it to the 600. Basically take a few pics, chug some milk and say goodbye.

I remember this being talked about during Monday's practice. I believe they said that Kanaan would go through an on-track refresher course (possibly Thursday) to be eligible to fill in if needed.

I have no problem with Larson attempting the double as long as the 600 is his priority and if there is an issue he makes 100% sure that he is in Charlotte in time for the green flag. He is a cup driver, not an Indycar driver.

see post #29

What does that post have to do with what I said? I don't care if he gets a waiver, the 600 should be his priority. Im pretty sure they will give him a waiver, but I don't think he should get one. What's the point of that rule if they give anybody a waiver for pretty much anything.

It is a shame that weather is messing this up....but if the 500 gets moved to Monday, all good.

Everything. It's Hendrick's call and he said he's staying with the 500. It's right there in plain english man. I don't like it either but it is what it is. :idunno:

I still think the requirement of running every race should be dropped and the rule for "win and you're in" be done away with. Make it to where you have to finish in the top-25 (or, even better, top-20) in points to get a playoff spot.

The requirement to run every race, which has become a guideline with these waivers, is a solution to a non-existent problem.
