Where Will Newman End Up?

The thought of someone taking a scalpel to my spine scares the crap out of me.
From Jayskis:
Hamlin has no plans to cut back racing sched: There are days when Denny Hamlin's back hurts so much he can hardly move. When he wakes up in the morning, it sometimes takes four hours before he can stand up straight and feel stable. His persistent back pain, caused by bulging discs, only got worse when he fractured a vertebra in the March race at Southern California's Auto Club Speedway. He needs surgery to fix the bulging discs, and some observers have called for Hamlin to give up on his longshot Chase hopes and have the procedure done now to make sure he has enough time to heal before 2014. But Hamlin told USA TODAY Sports on Saturday he plans to "tough it out" for the rest of the year. "It's tough because there are no backups in our sport," he said while relaxing in his motorhome before qualifying at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "I'm the face of our team the (Joe) Gibbs (Racing) team, FedEx, everyone so you can't just insert another player for the rest of the year and have no one know the difference. You know, I've got to do whatever I've got to do to just get through the season, honestly. And then I can figure out what I can do to (feel) better next year. But right now, we're just in a mode of trying to finish races."(USA Today)(7-28-2013)

I hate to say it but he's one more hard lick away from running Late Models at South Boston.

The spine is nothing to toy with. If I were Denny, I'd be out of that car, getting the necessary medical attention. Like TRL said, the longer he can rest up, post-op, the better.

Yep. He might not make it to the end of the year. He's taken several vicious hits ever since that Fontana crash. And he's not running well.

If he is sucking down hand fulls of pills to kill all that pain, 4hours to be able to stand up? He don't need to be in a race car or any car for that matter.

It does seem kind of senseless for Denny to still be in the car this year. He's way back in points with no wins, I don't know what he could possibly be racing for this season. One good head-on shot to the wall and we may be talking about whether he'll ever walk again let alone race again.

It seems to me this is just a bit conceited.
Denny, if you're hurt before the end of the year and can't race again, someone will replace you. You are not indispensible.

And really can he be ready for next year when you don't even get 4 months off?

Back to Newman, I think he may go to whoever bought Finch's team..

Especially with guys like Mark Martin, Ryan Newman and Jamie McMurray without a ride right now.

If McMurray is going anywhere, then Juan Pablo had better go first! Pretty sure McMurray has JPM beat by eight positions in the standings. What about last year? Yep, McMurray has him beat there too.

Yea, Denny needs to take a break. Go get surgery, rehab, and be ready for Daytona in February. He is risking permanent injury for no reason besides pride.

Hamlin's choice and Hamlin's responsibility for the outcome.

JPM is going nowhere. Montoya, Ganassi and Target are tighter than peas in a pod.

From Jayski:
Will crew chief Borland leave and go with Newman? Brickyard winner #39-Ryan Newman and crew chief Matt Borland are an effective pair, as they proved once again in Sunday's race. Given that Newman has been given his walking papers from Stewart-Haas Racing, effective at the end of the year, will Newman and Borland market themselves as a package deal to a prospective car owner?. When asked about his status at Stewart-Haas, Borland was noncommittal. "At this point, I'm not sure what next year is going to bring," Borland said. "Right now, 100% of my focus and our whole team's focus is on doing as best we can in these next six races (before the Chase field is set) and the next 16."
"Going to open up a fruit stand in Statesville if anybody is interested," Newman joked. "Do I get to drive the tractor?" Borland asked. "You get to drive the tractor," Newman said with a smile. "You also get to change the oil in the tractor."(NASCAR Wire Service)(7-29-2013)

I don't blame Denny for holding off. There are some serious risks when it comes to Lumbar surgery, even though it's 100X better than 20 years ago.

..........oh...with this win I think Newman has a shot at a ride with RCR.

It kind of pisses me off that he thinks if he leaves that ride FedEx all of a sudden will jump up and say "what no denny? See you." he needs an ego check, hopefully it doesn't come from being injured beyond repair.

I don't think Newman needed to win for owners to know what he can do in a race car. My guess is he already has his final suitors line up already. A deal in principle may already be done.

Now the win might help attracting sponsors.

What Denny could do while he recovers is sit in the booth and chant 'FeDex' like Mikey does for his sponsor, and make more sponsor appearances on race weekends. If Denny says he is the face of the team and sponsor, get off your ass and embrace it while you get fixed. He pulled this same crap with his knee. Held off, held off and then got it done DURING the season.

Yep, I am sure ESPN would jump for him to do on air appearances at the track and on sportscenter.

Is Mcmurray's deal up at the end of the year? I'm not aware of his contract situation but I definitely wouldn't be surprised if he's not back in the 1 car next year.

Agreed, it may have already been a good possibility to happen but I think that win might tip the scale in his favour over a guy like Kurt. If not RCR then my baseless speculation says EGR in the 1 car, either would be a good landing spot for him to remain competitive. I don't know if Newman and Montoya could be teammates though, that might be less than ideal given their history.

I'd say that's Denny being Denny, he's always been a pompous a** if you ask me. I think Gibbs should park him and protect his asset but that's just me. I fail to see the benefit of having him running out there is, he's way too far back in points, he's not contending for wins, and he's risking further injury especially with all these wrecks he's been in since coming back.

Yeah this might be a heartless "dog pile" statement, but anybody in the Gibbs stable this could easily apply to. Joe Gibbs has dealt with injured players for years and years. He has dealt with no telling how many injuries with the Redskins. If it is taking Hamlin four hours to stand up straight, why is he in the car? I am sure Gibbs has plenty of doctor connections that can read x rays, and if he thought or was told by his doctors it was bad enough, Denny would be out of the car. I trust his judgement more than some reporter filling up a column and selling magazines

It takes Denny 4 hours to stand up straight? Oh well, I guess if he chooses to have permanent back problems instead of getting it fixed now, it's his problem and not ours.

I never liked Denny but after the accident I realized that he is a big douchebag. Frankly, I think Vickers would do BETTER than Denny if he replaced him for the rest of the season. Indy is proof of that -- Denny qualifyed good, proof he had a fast car, but only finished in the bottom half of the teens. Whereas Vickers won a couple weeks ago.

I think Denny makes everyones list of possible chase contenders in 2014. There are a lot of big name drivers who would not ....IMO .

I think their names would be obvious , but their fans would be quite upset to hear them . Suffice to say they have had difficulty making the chase in the past couple years .
People like Jeff Gordon?

I'm thinkin Truex , Biffle , Stewart ,Gordon, and Brad will find it tough going.

Don't forget Manard and Logano, both win less and out of it pretty far. Biffle, Gordon, Stewart, and Truex are at least in it for now. It is theirs to loose. The two drivers that I think are a threat to take some spots that aren't in it are Kez and Kurt.

Stewart I think has been decent -- decent enough to fall back on that one win. Same with Truex. I think Biffle will remain in the top 10 but even if he falls out he has a win to fall back on. Who knows about Brad and Gordon.

Menard is done, and unless Logano suddenly makes a major rally he is done too.

Just to put these crazy thoughts into context , we were talking about 2014.:)
