WNBA 2025

Especially is Sophie is no longer with the fever which is likely.
Geez, the WNBA teams can only exclude 5 players in the upcoming draft. That means either Lexie or Sophie will not be with the Fever, not fair. The WNBA is trying to dilute the play of the league with all the new teams.

And we’re gonna keep having expansion drafts until 2030.

Sophie is gone. And Portland or Toronto will take her for the social media presence.

Yeah, apparently they can only protect 5 players this time because there are two expansion teams in the draft, and because the overwhelming majority of the players in the league will be unrestricted free agents. It is what it is.

I assumed that Sophie was already likely gone from Indy regardless, provided that someone offered her a big enough bag in free agency, but you never know. Nothing is set in stone.

IMO players on rookie deals should be protected.

Doing this every year is exhausting.

I agree that players on rookie deals should be ineligible for selection in the expansion draft, just like players who have spent two seasons with the "core" designation and are now unrestricted free agents, like Stewie, JJ, and Natasha Howard, are ineligible.

As for the exhaustion, I get it. It's the price of expansion. There are 24 new roster spots to fill, and the players obviously have to come from somewhere. As unfair as it may seem to the established teams to deal with, it would be just as or more unfair for the new teams if they were restricted to picking up only undrafted players and free agents. It is what it is.

The point is, it doesn't have to be that way!

Muggle, this comes off to me as a weird and unnecessarily hostile response. I don't get it. I was merely attempting to discuss the expansion draft with Andy, not start yet another pointless fight up here with you.

I never said or implied that the expansion draft had to be a certain way. I didn't make the expansion draft rules and have no power to change them. Please do not take whatever frustration you may feel about them out on me.

They’re expanding too much way too rapidly.

IMO, the expansion teams should get the first and second overall pick in the draft. And two more first round picks. And the expansion drafts be more limited, rookie deal players and core designated players exempt and teams protect five.

Bringing in two expansion teams in the same year when one just came in the year prior is certainly a lot for a league that only had 12 teams before this.

I'm content with the regular, non-expansion draft structure. I think the expansion teams should get high first round picks, but not necessarily the absolute top picks or any extra ones. They already get to grab players off of the established teams' rosters. That's plenty fair enough for the expansion teams IMO.

Again, we agree regarding the players on rookie contracts.

You misunderstand my post. Read it again. I was simply saying that the rules for the expansion draft do not have to be the way it is, which is horrible. Don't try to make something out of it that isn't intended or there.

The WNBA is going to tear teams apart and ruin the viewing for fans of their favorite teams with the expansion rules.

Muggle, I'm not trying to make something out of anything with you. I wasn't even talking to you - you quoted me. I've read your response and didn't get where you were coming from, because it had little to do with what I said and therefore came off weird to me.

Read my post that you responded to again. At no point did I say or imply that the rules are great and can never be changed. I simply stated the obvious and said that they are the way they are, and out of everything I said, that one little sentence was apparently the red button. What's the issue?

You stated "it is what it is.

I simply stated "but it doesn't have to be that way"

LOL, then you state that I am being hostile. It wasn't me that pushed a Red Button. Enough of this BS.

This.

With the free agency chaos that’s looming with the CBA which is gonna delay the expansion draft into free agency, I don’t even think there should be an expansion draft. Give Portland and Toronto the top two picks in the actual draft. Let them build their team up in FA and in the draft.
