What NASCAR can do to make TV experience more exciting

Is this what you're talking about @Matthew2470 ? o_O If so, no thanks. @ChexOrWrex seems to agree though. :D

Someone get this big walking carpet out of my way

Raceview may be good, but it doesn't improve television coverage or affect how the networks rebroadcast scanners.

Personally, Raceview doesn't fit the way I watch a televised race. I watch most races in the garage, with no computer access. I get up during the commercials and do yard work. I've been doing this so long I can 'feel' when the commercial break will end. I'd much prefer to listen to MRN / PRN, but I can't get their broadcast stream to synch with the TV pictures.
I was only responding as to whether or not I had problems understanding scanner conversations.

As far as Raceview improving the television coverage goes.... It certainly doesn't have anything to do with the television coverage but for me it has everything to do with race coverage. I wouldn't watch a race without it.

I dunno, I've sat in some pretty questionable seats. Would you want to see the Talladega backstretch from the 'chicken bone' seats? Not to mention road courses.

More engine noise? One of the few advantages of being at home instead of the track is that I don't have to wear earplugs.

You can control your TV volume! haha

As far as the fan angle, I am talking about what a race looks like from a good seat. Give the viewers a taste of what it's like watching those cars thunder past you at full tilt. Give people an idea of the type of speed and power these cars possess. Casual fans don't go to races but they might if they had a better idea of what it's like. There is a reason that several of us on this site are live race junkies. Hell, if money and time were no object we'd go to every race!

We never get family updates from you any more . How old is your son now ? Is he taller than you ? :) Your job situation settled down ? Hope you get to a race in 2015 .

Its hard to call the races boring when the networks dont always show us a race , maybe , just maybe if the TV viewers would be shown actual racing and not just focusing on the popular drivers , ratings might be a tad better. Lets not talk about what happens when the Chase starts.

Aiden is 11. Job is settled and going better than I could have ever hoped. I will be attending both MIS Cup races and at least one more TBD.

I realize Nascar is a American company but we here in Canada to your north love it as well. Unfortunately our access to not only nascar but most racing is limited because of it being shown on the American specialty networks. When Speed channel disappeared so did raceday and all the other Nascar related shows. They kept me looking forward to the next weeks race.

Not that nascar can do much but if our market was flooded with better access I am sure it would help with at least our side of the border

Nascar......... Canadian Tire Series. :)
What area are you from??
I am from the Cochrane area in Ontario.

Way down south from ya, Wasaga Beach. Canadian tire series is alright but very rarely does tsn show it live. European poker tournament seems to be more important

I get a few of the races on TV. I have a niece lives at the Beach and a son in Barrie.

Try having a real fan that is camping at the track as.well, to add commentary during the broadcast....

I think it's kinda pointless to complain about commercials. They need to show them in order to make money. All the networks can do is cut to split-screen during commercial breaks.

I'd also like to say that in the 2014 Athlon Sports Nascar Preview, there was an article which suggested that with NASCAR Racing now on NBC Sports, there'll be more commercials because NBC paid too much to televise NASCAR.

The whole thread is kinda pointless, as it's not like the France family is listening to the fans anyway.

I went to a sprint car race a while back, and I noticed two drones flying around the infield area, at each end of the track. I never gave it a second thought, until I saw the video on you tube. It was great. They were able to show the battles all over the track. They could show 4 and 5 car battles, down one straight, through the corners, and down the other straight continuously, without anything getting in the way. You could see the lines the drivers used to pass. You could almost tell what a driver was thinking, as they used other cars, and picked their lines, battling each other. It was like having a blimp view from about 40 or 50 feet above the cars. I don't think it would improve coverage of the big tracks, but I think the short tracks and road courses could benefit. It would be a lot more safe than something on cables, or a boom. Here is a link to the 40 lap 8 minuet main event, see if you think it might help.

After the disaster at Charlotte with a cable camera, it will be years before we see drones or anything besides fixed camera mounts and the blimp. Maybe a camera mount on top of the scoring towers?

I think as a fan of racing it is pointless to allow close to 40% of the race to be blotted out by endless commercialism and passively accept it without a whimper. some are sheep...some are goats. I'll agree to disagree.

I agree and both sides of the dispute could be pacified by splitting the screen 60/40 depending on which sound bites are used.

I don't see much point in butting my head against an immovable hay bale. 60% is better than nothing, but I'm open to options. Do you have an alternative?

They listen to the Fan Council way more than you may realize.

NASCAR is in a tough spot. They need the networks and the networks need to profit from their endeavors. How do you balance all that on top of declining attendance and rising costs? NASCAR is and always has been a business. None of us know what they deal with in terms of getting this all to work. I agree that the commercials are annoying but I am happy that I have access to premium products that allow me to see a live rendering of the race on my PC and phone along with the ability to scan the driver of my choice which makes commercials much less of an issue for me.

As far as the thread being pointless...I guess you can say that about almost anything in general. The purpose of this thread is not to get NASCAR's attention but for us here to have an off season discussion and share ideas.

NASCAR listens to the fan council like a parent listens to a 2 year old. When they tell you they **** their diaper you change it. When they tell you they want Candy you feed them carrots because you know what's best for them.

I think many of their decisions are based on what they are drinking and how much they have had.

It sounds like you guys are determined to be miserable regarding NASCAR no matter what happens. Must be a great way to live.

Miserable? Nah. I just think NASCAR is what it is and it's naive to think that my opinion matters to The France family.
Who said anything about board members communicating w the france family? That would be a great opportunity but its blatantly obvious thats not gonna happen.

This is merely nascar fans having fun in a discussion during the offseason. It gets the mind going & keeps the board awake during the lull. Happy you volunteered to voice your opinions :)

Replace most of the commentary with racing sounds and driver-crew chief/spotter communications
Wider camera angles so we can see multiple position battles at the same time
More camera angles near the catch fence so we can have a better sense of the speed these cars carry
In-car cameras for every car...and more gyro cam (by far my favorite view)
More equality in tv time and/or commentary for all 43 drivers
Only yellow flag commercial breaks, or at the very least side-by-side during every long green flag run
When showing a replay, always use it in a side-by-side fashion when the race is green. I hate when a replay takes up the full screen (and lasts for 5 minutes) in the middle of a live position battle.
Faster position ticker. It seems to be getting slower every year.
More prime-time and night races (still waiting for a Talladega night race)
Be able to download an app for your phone that lets you listen to your favorite driver during every race
Get rid of this stupid Twitter crap and other gimmicks that completely ruin the racing experience when they are shoved down our throat every 3 minutes. I watch races for the racing, not for social media updates.

I don't get this. Nobody asks for a sideline camera to see how fast football players run, or a 'fairway cam' to see how fast golf balls are it. Nobody asks for 'catcher's mask cam'.

Fence cams and 'gopher cams' don't tell the story of what's going on. The worst is the camera at the finish line with cars whizzing by; that should only be used in slo-mo when there's a close finish. There's enough 'Look how fast they're going!' camera shots used as it is now.

Let me ask you this....would you rather have a close-up shot of a single car going around the track, or a catch fence camera in the middle of the front stretch that is pointing turns turns 3 and 4? I prefer the latter not only because it gives the viewer a much greater sense of speed but also because it shows how loose cars can get coming out of turn 4, how close they get to the wall on exit, and the ability to see dozens of cars racing over the course of a few seconds.

Regarding your first points, I have actually seen many internet users (and a sports tv/radio show hosts) discuss how awesome sideline cameras for football games and catcher's mask cameras for baseball games would be. I'm not saying it should be the primary view, but a handful of times per game would be pretty cool so long as it does not detract from the importance of the game.

So you've got the camera up at the top of the fence? Okay, I misunderstood you. I thought you meant you wanted to see more cameras mounted at the base of the fence / on top of the wall, as they have been in the past.

Honestly, I kind of want to see more in depth stuff about the technical aspect of racing. Like how different part of the chassis works, what an adjustment to one part of the chassis do. Have some stuff on the engine, tires, etc. I'm not talking about superficial stuff either. I want them to really get into it, get into the nitty gritty of it.

If you get too far into it, it becomes "2 guys garage". Casual fans want to see the racing & could care less about the nitty gritty of the engineering. It would drive away more fans to get into the nitty gritty than it would to bring in.
