Carl Edwards retires

Anyone remember way back when?

Everything I have read says Carl is stepping away to "pursue other interests" which could mean a lot of things but normally that language is not used if there is an illness or something that is forcing a person to give up their vocation.

Always fun to speculate, I guess. Easier to just to tune into the press conference tomorrow and listen to the man himself.

You are 100% right as Carl will inform us of the reasons he is stepping aside. If it works out that he really is leaving to get to other things he would rather do I will be so pleased as the easiest thing to do is nothing and hang around for way too long. Go out like Rusty and Jeff and enjoy the rest of your life.

He is probably tired of the JGR ring around the rosie crap.

Hard to believe, right?

There's legitimately nothing to speculate. He just decided he was done. Wants to spend time with his family, out of the spotlight etc. Many times that might be a cover story for something else - but I assure you this one isn't. He might decide to come back some day in some capacity, who knows. But today he's just done with it...

Rust, yeah. Gordon..... I don't know..... I saw his last race @ Martinsville..... twice. I'm not sure he's even left yet.

Good to know, I was wondering if he had any lingering effects from the hit he took at Homestead.

I can respect that. There's more to life than racing. I will miss watching him on the track as he was an amazing talent. Even I moreso I will miss his personality in the garage.

Good luck to Carl in his future endeavors. As fans, we often forget that these guys are humans like the rest of us and have families and lives outside of the sport.

Did Kelly Ripa ever get a full-time partner for her show? I know Carl has co-hosted with her in the past. I bet he winds up with a gig like that at some point soon.

I think this is good news for Matt Kenseth .. a little less pressure to leave JGR now. Hopefully Matt has many years ahead of him. Even if JGR want to bring Erik Jones over from Furniture Row next year I could see Kenseth going over there if needed. Furniture Row wants a multi car operation.

I could not imagine anything worse than being in the spotlight and having to make constant appearances, always be nice and smiley and having brats of all ages pestering you for autographs or to have things signed. I hope he revels in normalcy.

I like to think Carl Edwards is retiring to fulfill his dream of playing minor league baseball. I'm already writing the movie about his comeback called "Space Race" call me Warner Bros

I'm surprised that this isn't more common. A 40 week season schedule is absolutely barbaric.

Absolutely as between all the sponsor BS you have to so plus travel, testing and appearing for the manufacturer and others it would be awful. All the money in the world would not attract me to that kind of lifestyle.

Was shocked when I heard the news. Didn't think it would be Carl with him being g a championship contender. I like Suarez and I'm glad he's getting a Cup ride. He has a good chance at winning rookie of the year and even winning a race.

WTF? What happened?

*I'll read the entire thread in a bit but.*

Glad is not health related.

But I wonder if being taken out when he had the championship won last year was the last straw.

Carl was awfully nice about the whole thing like he knew he was going to be done so no need in getting upset. Man this sucks. Carl was my second driver after Jeff.

Well I have to admit that him retiring was the last thing I expected. I really hope that he is going on his terms and for the right reasons.

I think what Carl is doing is just something that in the next say 10 years is going to be more and more common. Athletes deciding to retire while they still have an excellent quality of life. No need to hang around until you're too sore to get out of bed etc. I WAS surprised by the news but I take my hat off to him. I've never been a fan but I wish him all the best.

From what has been reported he is going out on his own terms as there are other things in life more important than racing in Nascar.

TIMMYS HOT TAKE

I am shocked! by this that it is carl but I cant blane him. If i was 37 and had a chance to retire and live comfortably i would do it and so would all of we

i bet if nascar was just pure racing (ala 70s 80s, early 90s) carl would not have retired

its not just racing its the sponsor apppearances the autograph sessions, the media days that are forced upn you that tire you out

also people saying carl wil be back soon. if he does would he have to go back with jgr?

jgr will not let him get away

So if this really is it for Carl, is he a Hall of Fame driver? As of now he's 27th on the career wins list.

He's definitely in at some point, even if they start inducting fewer than five people a year soon. 28 Cups wins, 72 NASCAR wins using Kyle Busch math, a Coke 600, a Southern 500, an All-Star Race, and a Busch championship will be more than enough.
