Carl Edwards retires

One reason I was worried it was Carl is that at his banquet speech he thanked Dave Rogers and said that Dave was the last crew chief he'd ever have. The conviction he said it with made me take notice

Not every kid dreams of joining the circus.
NASCAR has become a really bad joke.

That is interesting as I didn't watch the awards but from what you have said it sounds like Carl was done and only would have raced 1 more year if he really had to.

It didn't hit me til now, but remember when Edwards bumped Kyle out of the way for the W at Richmond? He probably knew he was going to be done after this year anyway and was super aggressive because maybe that would have been his last chance for a win for all he knew. Makes sense now.

Hearing this news brought me back in here today . Anybody else remember Carl being one of the most vocal against the new championship joke when the idea was first floated? Could it be he just doesn't have the desire to run the full season anymore knowing how little control you have over your end of season destiny?

I would've put Jones in the 19 before Suarez

Deal was done on '17. I have further comment, but want to make sure that something dire is not causing Carl to do this.

I have seen absolutely nothing to confirm this, but I'm with you.

Anyone remember way back when?

Somebody, call the number! :p

Rusty might have been the first one and I wish they would do away with those sorts of things as they last longer than a viral infection.
the king in 92 was the first one I can remember, I have the decal in my gang box at work. farewell tour it was called.

Maybe Carl was unhappy with the direction the sport is going, and decided to get out now?

If Carl were to come back at some point (which is unlikely, IMO) don't be surprised if it's with a Ford team.

Edwards is one of my favorites. Very genuine guy and a great racer to boot. Gonna miss him out on the track.

Gordon, Stewart and Edwards all gone in the last few months. The sport is changing fast.

Not only that, Jr. and Kenseth may not be very far behind :(

Looks like the Gillette young guns are going to be retiring in the next couple of years.

From Feb 2004. The Gillette Young Guns are six of racing's top young drivers - Kurt Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth and Ryan Newman. Two years later in Feb 2006, Carl Edwards and Jamie McMurray joined the group.

Well Allenbaba already put our minds to rest in terms of the reasoning (it isn't anything dire), so what's the further comment?

I feel bad for his fans more than anything. Atleast Jeff & Tony got their farewell tours.
Well that is the best reason to have him go the way he did. Those fair well tours are designed
to bring in extra money. I sure am glad we don't have to listen for a whole season about what a great guy he was.

I was never a Carl fan. Never. I remember him going to the the bush series and wrecking his own team mate saying this was my win. Carl also took out other drivers becasuse that was the only way he could beat them. I thought it ironic that he went after Brad so much while he was driving for Junior and then Brad comes to cup and wins his championship.
Carl froze the 3 times he had a shot at being champion and he screwed the pooch 3 times.

It must have been some off season with negotiations for Gibbs and sponsors to finally sign off on his contract. I think he will be in the booth before this season reaches 26 races.

To be honestly, I don't think his career is "farewell tour" worthy. Mark Martin was such a staple of the sport for so many years. Jeff Gordon did so much good to propel the sport and make some of these drivers household names across the country not to mention won four championships. Carl really, really impressed me with the class he displayed in Homestead after his wreck, but he doesn't have that iconic status that facilitates a big farewell tour whether he would have wanted it or not (which clearly he didn't).

And that's a great attribute to Carl.......... shows he's a pretty stand up guy that's not full of himself.....
Never liked him. Not full of himself????? That why he threatened so many?
I like "a$$hole as a more fitting description.

I always thought Carl would be the next Mark Martin, racing for darn near ever chasing a Championship. Guess I was wrong on that one.

I hate seeing the big names retire. How about Newman, Biffle, Menard, McMurray, Kahne, Bowyer and others that no longer care about winning retire? Let some younger talent get in there and wreck each other for wins rather than just play follow the leader.

And you're a Brad fan??????

Wait, I just realized, that's where this friction comes from. That was a good feud.

Yes it was and the winner is 'the first driver to win a championship from JJ".
BTW I thought it was great because Denny and Carl both always had it out for Brad. I guess they recognized he was better than them. He prove that by winning a championship and neither of those jerks will. :D

I never cared for Carl. Never bought his phony Eddie Haskell act. And like @Team Penske, I too remember the years when he was a prick, on and off the track. Trying to intimidate Kenseth was just one example. How many times did he intentionally wreck Kez? I lost count.

I keep trying to figure out how to reply to this and I literally can't put the sentence together because I just don't even know.

Drivers are open to criticism, We don't have to like a driver because some one else does.

Come on man, it's like you are poking at sensitivies. You insulted a driver, and then appeared to take the opportunity to express your personal investments and feelings about driver heirarchy and character by highlighting Brad's superiority over him, Denny, and making note that he beat JJ (which is irrelevant to the topic). I assume this is because you have residual feelings from the feud, being a Brad fan. You also called Carl an a$$hole in a thread dedicated to him and his retirement. People who are invested in Carl (like you Brad), are obviously gonna take offense to your choice of words. The posters are clearly a bit upset about Carl's situation so your comments may come off as ignorant, rude and disrespectful to your fellow posters.
Is what it is though I guess
