Richard Petty 7-Time Real Cup Champ, KyBu is a Waiver Chump

Richard Petty is the King. He was not only an iconic NASCAR winning driver -- he helped build this motorsport, and was part of the Yin to France's Yang.

Jimmie Johnson is the heir apparent with a few years left to get number eight.

Other drivers from Earnhardt on down with multiple Cup Championships are all superior to KyBu.

Then come the non-waiver Cup Champions...
 
Kyle is a good driver and has earned his status. Still, I'm not keen on NASCAR boasting about him getting close to "breaking" Petty's win record - not when they're counting Kyle's lower series wins while only counting Petty's top series wins. Petty once said that he probably could have won more championships, but back then championships didn't pay much while race wins paid better - so you ran to win (or blow) and didn't really chase the championship.
 
You put them in the same sentence as each other, that's doing more for Kyle than I think you realize.

Was talking to @Stacy as he made the thread, NASCAR hasn't exaggerated anything although alot of people take them out of context.

Far less competition back in the day, but a different culture and world too.
I think it was just as difficult as today's series. Just in different ways, a lot more dangerous. Lots of road weary travel with far less comforts may sound silly, but fatigue takes a toll. Driving styles were different, more like a marathon then.

The biggest thing in my mind is that the the old Grand National and todays Cup Series was and is about being the top series.
Petty was running against the best of his day.
Kyle has won 40 against the best of his day.
 
Oh no! We still have 9 days to go until the next race so the next week could be brutal in terms of subject material. I will leave the tale of Kyle and the minor leagues to others but as a Cup driver Kyle is very good and, IMO, is a high risk high reward driver and has won more cup races than most ever will. The issue of whether Kyle is in the same league as Richard, Dale, Cale, Bobby, Jeff, JJ, David and the rest is not a question. After his career is finished we can figure out where he slots in amongst the best. Top 15 very likely, top 10 maybe and top 5 is not a snowball's chance.
 
That other thread trying to put KyBu on the same pedestal as Richard "The King" Petty is click bait and fake news. :growl:

A thread trashing legendary Richard Petty by comparing his vastly superior achievements to an immature KyBu man-child with far less achievement -- IS the unnecessary thread. ;)
 
Kyle is underrated though. If Goodyear hadn't done him dirty he would have 41 cup wins, and only trail Petty by 159 wins.
 
Nobody in the media actually believes what they're saying about Kyle closing in on Petty. They're paid mouth pieces and their #1 purpose is to dumb down the sport and spell out everything for the casual new comer.
 
200 Cup wins is a lot.

Racking a bunch of them up on the short track snot-bowls of the southeast with 2 other professional teams in fields of 16 or 18 cars padded his stats.

For what it's worth, in my little world Busch has 40. No mean feat in the competitive environment he inhabits.

Petty wouldn't have been the King driving against the guys Kyle competes with.
This is why it isn't fair or accurate to compare eras.

40 cup wins at his age is a great accomplishment. A great driver that needs no embellishment.

I wouldn't disagree with that, but I am not sure Kyle would been as good in Pettys era, either.

My concern isn't Petty's era.
My concern is that his stats represent him racing with similar competitors that couldn't have won against today's Xfinity and Truck talent. The same level of talent for which people bash Kyle's overall NASCAR wins.
Petty didn't always race against Cup level talent.
