Notable for the targeted need to dis Petty.

David Pearson who makes a great argument for being the GOAT won many of those races we should be trashing too.
In fact most of his wins prior to 1972, were racked at the same type of events.
I bet we could do the same with Bobby Allison, Bobby Isaac, Ned Jarrett and many others, too.
Perhaps we should we revoke all those stats , We could restart the Nascar Hall of Fame too while we are it, and of course fawn over Kyle with just a little more intensity.

I was at this Daytona 500 and saw it all in real time, but, had to wait till we got back home to get the word. I had my headset on on the walk to the car listening to all I could. I too was shaken by this event, deeper than I would have ever thought. My wife was a big Sr fan and it took her off racing for about two years. It was surreal.
We have not been to another Daytona 500 since then and the track is 150 or so miles from my house.

So what exactly killed him? Did he hit his head against steering wheel?
 
Based on the thread learnings Jeremy Clements is one of Nascars 2017 top 20 drivers.
13 Cup winners so far then the 4 xfinity drivers that has won there way in to the chase so far.

Comparing the two win totals are just ridiculous. Two completely different eras. Kyle Bush's little arms probably could not even turn the steering wheel in a pre 90's nascar.

Cup cars have had hydraulically assisted power steering since the mid-70's ... required by the use of faster steering box ratios and smaller steering wheels.

Before that, power steering wasn't a requirement because your gramma could turn the 36:1 box with the Divco milk truck steering wheel. Nice swipe at Busch, though.

Geoff Bodine says he brought power steering to NASCAR in the early 80's and was laughed at for it.

and boy do they cry when the a/c goes out. I would too though, but yeah no comparison. Easier to make fearless moves and live to tell about it now days also. Not only was Petty record king like, he survived the most dangerous period in auto racing. It wasn't all luck either. He is the reason for window nets. Driving with a simple seat with a lap belt. Same type car Petty was driving at Darlington last weekend at Darlington back in the day. People dying back then

As you can tell, I don't buy into the it was easier back then B.S. you can't leave out how the track conditions were back then on all of the tracks Petty and the rest of them raced on. It wasn't just about racing cars. It was steel barriers, and telephone poles, crappy lighting, and deplorable track conditions compared to today.

I had a Lee ps box in 1976. If 14:1 boxes and much smaller, more precise driver inputs didn't matter, gramma's Buick would still be the order of the day.

None of yesterday's he-men could turn a current car for more than 20 laps without the assist.
