NASCAR - Television Ratings Thread

And every other sporting event that was on for the weekend, NBA,NCAA, etc.....

Can you believe that in 2015 the LV race had 7.7 million viewers and this year had 4.7 million? Is that sort of thing normal or acceptable or does it even matter?

I think it indicative of how people watch now. Firestick, Roku, FS1 app etc....

The NFL lost 10% of its viewers last year, Nascar 11%. My cable bill went up.

Get rid of the cable as you don't need to pay those prices in most cases. I will have to check into how big a ratings decline the major sports have suffered in the last 5 years. I know that losing 3 million fans for the Las Vegas race seems exorbitant. Thanks for weighing in.

If you mean the losses are due to people streaming it isn't so. I think no more than 50,000 fans stream Nascar races each week.

You'll be telling me that all the fans that used to show up at the track are now unaccounted for via streaming? NASCAR has had a decade of falling revenue at the tracks - 10 years of negative numbers at the track and the ratings on TV are cratering. Yep, everyone's watching via streaming services now.o_O

Its across all sports

Not at the rate of NASCAR and you forget, like most, that the NBA is growing.
Yet we outpoint the NBA in the ratings, oh and I like it so what others do doesnt concern me because there are enough of us watching to keep it here for a long, long , long time.

Wow, we beat a golfing event by just a little bit. If that's the rally point we really do have some serious issues. Seriously, a golf tournament?

Dude!!

WGC event with Phil Mickelson winning in the playoff against Justin Thomas?!?! You must not follow golf! For NASCAR to outdraw THAT with a Vegas race is pretty darn impressive. It will be interesting to see how the Sunday race numbers are should Tiger continue to play himself back into contention.

The Masters vs Texas in a few weeks....

I hear ya, more of my friends follow golf than NASCAR. There's a lot of new personalities on the golf front these days. And these new guys have been great for golf. Me, I wouldn't give you a nickel for golf, much less watch it. But, it has a huge following. NASCARs numbers may never return to where they were in the late eighties through the mid 2000s. So be it. Nothing I can do about it, except watch and support. On a Sunday afternoon, give me the choice between a race, golf or a baseball game, no contest. I'll agree, the numbers for NASCAR ain't to spiffy, but if the trend starts looking like NASCAR is the most watched sporting event most weekends, then NASCAR may not be dead just yet. Somehow, someway, things have got to start looking better for NASCAR.

Ummm, the NBA final's games destroyed the NASCAR final races last year. And we are back to you and Brian France chatting up that everyone not in the stands and not watching on TV is watching NASCAR via streaming. o_O

NASCAR is gonna be here for long , long, long time. Long after you are gone.

I don't think I stated that it wouldn't. It just gonna be a lot smaller and look a lot different than it does now.

No question that Nascar will be here for many years. What are your thoughts on the lower yearly ratings Nascar receives? Do you think lower ratings will lead to changes in the series such as less teams, money, races or will things will very similar to what they are today?

I had no idea the drop was that steep. The Daytona 500 would kill for 12.1 million fans these days.

I think things will level off and it will continue to be a National Sport, I think its possible for more teams to come in provided the economy supports it and sponsors are available. Will the drivers and teams make millions like in the boom time of the sport, I doubt it, but I promise you the ones who can wheel it will be getting paid.

I'm honestly trying not to even give a rip about ratings anymore. I've never been surveyed the first time. I don't think the powers that be have any idea how many folks are streaming. I remember when you had to listen to MRN to enjoy live coverage of a lot of events. NASCAR managed to crawl up out of that swamp into our living rooms. So, deathbed, the end, its all over, the fat lady is tuning up, or whatever, I'm still watching. All the news about this sport is negative. Why listen to it, if you still love stock car racing? As long as they're lining up 36 or 40 or 43 or whatever, I'm watching.

I agree that the best of the best will always get paid and I think cup will end up having a spec engine available which will help new teams.
I wonder if there are any FOX Sports Go/NBC Live Extra stream numbers released?
#1 sport for the weekend seems very good!
From what I have read if you get 50,000 streamers per race you are doing well.

I think the Major Manufactures will tolerate Specs in the mid majors, not so much in CUP. Thats already been given a big thumbs down.

Standing Ovation

Well guess what, the CUP series gets worse ratings now than the xfinity series did 10 years ago. It's all the mid majors now. Something has to give.

a spec body would be a solution in cup, if needed. They are running manufacturer motors in Xfinity and nobody seems to be squeaking about it. They already have a motor rule in cup

CUP in not a mid major, its Premier and they wont have spec engines

In the coming years I think we will see most everyone associated with Nascar continue work on aggressively reducing costs and some of the initiatives may be eye popping. Cutting costs will help mitigate lower ratings and an overall lack of popularity.

Tiger is in contention heading into this weekend at the Valspar. If he's in the Top 5 heading into Sunday I'll be very interested to see what type of ratings golf gets relative to the cup race. Next weekend is the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament which usually gets better ratings than the Elite 8 round (following week).

They are gonna have to do so to survive. The gravy day times are over.

I would have never guessed that golf could siphon viewers from Nascar as I think of the fan bases as being almost incompatible. The way it seems for Nascar is that people will watch it if there isn't anything better on but if so they abandon ship.

If the next broadcast deal pays Nascar less as many suspect it will they need to ruthlessly cut costs to ensure survival.

I think it crosses over my than you think. Interestingly, NASCAR and golf have both faced similar issues the last 5-10 years, dropped ratings, Nike leaving, courses closing etc. Plus, Tiger being in contention and his overall comeback has been a bit of a national/cultural story. It's setting up to be the story of the summer. Even more so than where will Lebron end up.

My professor thinks 2020 will be interesting for tv contracts. He thinks networks will concentrate more on streaming rights than tv rights. Will leagues sell tv contracts to one network and streaming rights to another company like YouTube or will it be a bundle? He thinks the days of mega tv contracts are on its last legs.

Like nascar the economy affected golf. When people had money they could buy golf equipment and spend a whole day on the course. When the economy tanked people didn't have disposable income and they didn't golf. They sold their equipment and didn't have time to hang out at the golf course all day. In 2011 I believe the PGA wanted to target millennials and came out with play 9. Its quicker and they were selling it as hanging out with your buds for 2 hours. The purists hated it because golf is 18 holes. The program struggled but starting in 2015 it took off with the 20 something crowd and it's gaining traction with people under 45. Golf is selling fun at some of these tournaments. The Scottsdale open draws over 200,000 for a single day.

There's a Tiger on the prowl & there's brackets to fill out.

I'm thinking that the NASCAR ratings are getting ready to take a bigger hit then usual this weekend.

Tiger is on the course this afternoon and people are coming back in droves. Say what you want about golf, but there are a helluva lot of us that follow the sport that are NASCAR fans.

Then, channels around the corner are finishing up their weekend tournaments just ahead of this evenings NCAA Basketball selection show. There are brackets to fill out an I know I'm one of the many that take part in that tradition.

Me, I;ll be streaming NASCAR on one television and the PGA/NCAA Men's Basketball on two others.

It'll be interesting to see how the ratings shake out this weekend. Any predictions?
