2019 Texas I-- O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 -- Pre-Race Thread

“One of the things we wanted to hold true to is not to go back to single-car qualifying,” Miller said. “Single-car qualifying is two things — it’s boring and it’s expensive. It also doesn’t create a good show.

Not being the brightest star in the sky, can someone explain to me the "expensive" part?
I heard a brief discussion Monday evening on Nascar Radio. Someone from Nascar put it this way... If there is single-car qualifying, the teams spend time and money developing single-car speed that is relevant only to qualifying. Special qualifying parts and setups. If there is group qualifying, the race setups are also optimum for qualifying, so those development efforts specific to single-car speed are not undertaken.

IDK if this is a big thing, small thing, or complete fake news, but that's the rationale that was offered for saying single-car qualifying is more expensive than group qualifying.

sure sounds reasonable. Hopefully the new qualifying edicts will straighten some of it out. I'll laugh like crazy if the teams find away around it though. I love the cat and mouse part of racing myself.

That's been my understanding as well. Similar to the cost cutting rationale of choking hp down this year.

It's qualifying in a taped up race trim and some other tricks. Get what little you can get past the OSS.

Drag it through the pit stalls at the start of qualifying. If you're still in your stall when it gets to you ...

I know in the past, teams used special light weight parts and oils. After q'ing, everything would have to be changed to race trim.

they put something like Kyleonite on the surface, bad juju ;)

Next year, they are going to glue the cars to the track and then spin the track until only one car is left ....... he will be declared the winner. The fans will gush with joy

just saw this? Big Bill talked about Nascar racing being show business years and years ago. didn't you watch the recent Earnhardt/Gordon special when Gordon talked about he and Sr talking about the show?

Everything's Great show is on a different channel than Failed To Log A Time show.

It's not show business, it's sport, and it should unfold organically. Other leagues have figured that out.

And by just saw this, I was referring to the post.

Greg Biffle back on-track and zero discussion outside of this post? RF keeps being more of a bitching board than a racing board each day...
Ol’ Greg is out of race shape, not been on the track in 3 years and hadnt won in 6 and is turning 50 this year. Not exactly a head turning story.

I’m sure natural talent will come to light but the days of “the biff” are long gone.

That's more attention than his retirement got combined. Poof.

Buying 3 hours of TV time to watch one car on the track. I agree. However, I am all in favor of the fastest 10 lap average and you have a total of 30 minutes to do it. Starting line up for this qualifying would be the finishing order of the last race in reverse.

I could actually see them move to this as another cost cutting measure, and roll qualifying into an existing entire practice session, using the 10 lap averages, if you don't get a consecutive 10 lap run in you start in the back. Makes sense at this point.
