NASCAR - Television Ratings Thread

Look around next time, bunch a youngsters driving around in mom's four door. Nobody is modding cars it's illegal. Hell in Oklahoma we have no smog, but unless you want to count putting black covers on tail lights and black tint on the windows and woo flowmasters after the cats that's it.

You have said you live in the middle of nowhere so maybe you just don’t see it where you live. Just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

This thread has gone way off topic so I will try and get it back on course. Hopefully the next Nascar race will have great tv ratings!

So let me get this straight.

Martinsville absolutely crushed the defending Stanley Cup champions (go Caps!) playing the best team in hockey this year, handily beat a slate of important NBA games just before the playoffs, and only barely lost to a major PGA tournament, and NASCAR is dead?

Lol.

I’m not sure where the notion that Nascar is dead or dying is coming from. They have lost a lot of fans, sponsorship dollars, attendance, ratings as well having a demographic problem that doesn’t improve. NASCAR has a lot of issues but is not dead.

So has baseball but no one is proclaiming the MLB dead.

IDK anyone on here that said Nascar or MLB is dead. A small market team like the Cincinnati Reds probably outdrawn all Nascar races and Nascar has a good TV contract. IDK about MLB but Nascar is planning on getting smaller based on what has been said about slashing races. Smaller ain’t dead!

MLB set a record for revenues in 2018.
I guess the other argument which should pop up at any moment considering how often it's repeated is that NASCAR and the SMI/ISC also rake in a ton of revenue, also mostly thanks to TV contracts.

But MLB does dominate TV programming in the markets they're in. Most people totally ignore RSNs in the context of NBA/MLB/NHL viewership much of the time and look only nationally.

Regionals like NESN and MSG are big as are all the FOX regionals. I really don’t think a lot of people understand that because they either don’t follow those sports or only see ratings from 1 or 2 regionals. IDK what the Dallas Stars ratings are but they put over 18k in the stands 41 times a year which I think is good.

so now the TV ratings thread has degenerated to stick n ball, and the 2021 deathbed wish list. o_O

In fairness on the last page you were calling Nascar fans bottom feeders and said that you came on this thread to mess with people. Not exactly on topic.

I said bottom feeders aren't fans. Deathbedders are always shooting low..is there a correlation?:p

I’m all for keeping this thread about ratings and related matters. So on that note I will say that I hope that when the numbers are released Nascar improves it demographic for the Texas race.

Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Texas 500 earned a 2.3 on Fox. Was up from the race the year before, which ran on FS1, that posted 1.7. However, 2017 and 2016's races ran on Fox. The 2017 race posted a 2.7, and the 2016 race posted a 2.7 share. Thus, we are down from the numbers run on network TV in 2017 and 2016.

Since ratings appear to be flat if not slightly up from 2018, I have to say maybe I underestimated the Dale Jr effect. I saw lots of people saying they'd stop watching when Jr retired and maybe they weren't kidding.

It would be bad if people stopped watching because a driver retired as you couldn’t really call them race fans. I know when guys like Bobby Allison, Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip retired and when Dale died people didn’t dump Nascar.

There's no doubt. The fringe viewers that make the difference between a 10% decline and a flat or marginal increase are by definition the most casual, least hardcore racing fans. I'm not interested in judging them, but they are motivated by factors such as the most popular driver retiring.

It's weird. Yeah I'll be sad when Happy goes but I'll just pick another driver. I like the cars that vroom vroom and turn left :idunno:

Are we sure we haven't just been measuring cord cutting this whole time?

Dale Sr fans expected Jr to be their new hero. When things didn't a pan out all that well and Jr started running mid-pack many of his fans just stopped caring to watch.

That's part of it. Not to make excuses for NASCAR as I think it's affected many entities, but I think the rush of streaming services and being able to watch events on gadgets instead of televisions, the advent of the various DVR mechanisms, hit the Nielsen company from out of nowhere that they weren't prepared for. I think they're still trying to catch up with their methodology and it's messing with the validity of what's going on throughout the television landscape. We're watching television through ways never seen before, and Nielsen is still behind the curve in regards to that, especially when it comes to the younger demographics. The cord cutters are simply finding other ways to watch things that aren't of the conventional nature anymore.

Yeah this is like what I said in the Harvick thread. Junior won 26 races and was a championship threat in the late 00s/early 10s. That's more than most NASCAR driver sons can say.

There is no way I can speak for @FLRacingFan but he has posted stats before that showed a relatively small number stream Nascar programming. I think the number was less than 50k per race. Also I thought there was some harmonizing between different platforms as far as numbers reporting goes.

When you look at the average age of a Nascar fan (60) it makes sense that a lot would still watch via traditional methods.

A Championship threat in the late 00s and early 10s? Those were his worst years. He had one legitimate shot in 04 and other than that wasn't very close.

Yeah...very overrated driver, imo. Winning an average of 1.5 races a year is fantastic, absolutely, but undisputedly better drivers like Kyle, Jimmie, and Tony don't have half the following of Jr.

The one exception is Dale Jarrett. Ned was a two time champion, ('61 and '65). I'll always believe Davey Allison would have won a couple of titles driving for Robert Yates. DJ won his lone title at Yates. Kyle, Dale Jr., Steven Wallace, Larry Pearson, (he did win two BGN titles) never did measure up to their dads abilities. I'm guessing it would be a tough spot to be in. All the second gen drivers were respectable, Steven was iffy. The best second gen driver to overshadow his dad was Sterling Marlin, two Daytona 500 wins is impressive.

Steven Wallace was a disaster I would say rather then iffy, but yeah. Sure are a bunch racing today, both Burton's, Nemechek, Elliott, Blaney, Keselowski has out done his dad, so has Martin Truex jr, Both of the Dillion's probably have thanks to Paw Paw. ,

Ryan Blaney has already surpassed Dave. Richard Petty definitely surpassed Lee.

In NASCAR terms, yes. On the whole, it'll happen, but let's wait.

Buddy Baker didn't match Buck, but he was great in his own right.

Dale Sr. surpassed Ralph.

Casey Mears, not his uncle, not an embarrassment ether. Honestly the much maligned Austin Dillon is better though.

Can't really measure Johnny Sauter against his dad, because Jim was mostly a short track racer outside of NASCAR. But Johnny has more big league accomplishments.

This tangent should get moved to a different thread. We haven't gotten to Nelson Piquet Jr. yet. :D

Doubt he'll beat him, but maybe Chase can match his old man...

That is interesting. It points to the fact that streaming services are important, will play a bigger role in the future of how people watch everything, and will effect the next "more money, more money" TV contract.
Your right. In the past people stayed home as a family and that is over and done with now.
The TV itself is not part of this generations must have but a $1000. cell phone and a room in mom's basement is.

There are always a couple of people entering multiple posts on a daily basis intended to remind us all that the ratings have dropped off the cliff.

Always so informative and completely free of any detectable bias. You and the tomato are pillars of the fan base. Congratulations.
You must find it very interesting and entertaining because you seem so riveted to any new posts.
Maybe your scrolling finger is hurt?? Or you just can't help yourself and so must pile in with your form of drivel.
