Steve Phelps' State of the Sport news conference

I'm liking what Im hearing especially if they work on the short track setup

I don't think they like much, cut down the height of the spoiler, maybe narrow it also. It would be cool if they let the teams be able to adjust it

I'm overjoyed to hear they recognize something needs to be done about the short track package. Reverting to 2018 sounds like a good start to me.

I have been saying for a LONG time that there was NO WAY one single approach could give us good racing on the wide variety of tracks NASCAR races on. The fact that this seems to have come as a surprise to some of the brightest minds in the sport saddens and depresses me..........

I don’t understand why adjustable spoilers haven’t been discussed. They used to to do it that way. Gives the teams more options setup wise.

I’d think that would be cheaper than sticking new blades/parts/pieces on the cars every time the package changes for a particular track.

I am interested in the new venues concept, where are they going to go that people will show up to? Not being cheeky, I just dont see where they can go and expect full grand strands in this day and age. I mean are there any short tracks that are Cup ready by 2021? I just think 2021 will be schedule reshuffle, maybe not think but a BOLD PREDICTION . I also am nervous about a fourth OEM in that I hope its not Honda at the expense of them leaving/hurting Indy Car and IMSA.

Honda will not leave INDYCAR and IMSA is extremely important to the Acura brand

Art St. Cyr said HPD can do things like IMSA and INDYCAR or do NASCAR. Basically just overall bandwidth and capability...could be a very interesting development across much of Motorsports in this country contingent on Honda.

It's much more than the spolier. With the larger splitter, larger radiator pan, and aero / brake ducts, they basically designed wings into the front of the cars. A wing in front requires a wing in back. The huge ass spoiler was necessary to "balance" the car. They wouldn't want to say they would revert back toward the previous package, but they'll have to remove downforce elements from the front to make a short track and road course package viable.

In a Racer.com article, sources close to Honda said it was either one or the other, not both. I will do my best to find the article, I believe it was a Robin Miller one from last week. I hate citing sources and not being able to produce something but I will try to find article here in a bit

Phelps described the racing as "great". Nascar needs to replace him.

I've always been high on Phelps generally. He doesn't have a racing background per se, but he struck me as highly intelligent and competent as a business executive. I believe some of the marketing changes in the past year are due to him. However, you don't tell your customers that you "over-delivered" to them, especially when he damn well knows the rules changes this year were divisive.

The only constant and positive for the sport is the guaranteed TV money it receives. And that is only a positive for Nascar/ISC/FRANCE and SMI because they receive the majority share of the money.
The TV revenue has been carrying the sport these past few years. So why does everyone think that suddenly all these new tracks are going to be on the schedule.
The track owners are not going to share their piece of the pie. Nascar now controls most of the tracks. How would it make business sense to drop a race from a track they fully own? Why would Nascar want to give a race to a track they would just get a sanction fee?
Also Phelps said that Dover, Phoenix and Loudon are now short tracks. So the ground work is being laid to just rearrange the schedule and track descriptions.
Plus SMI isn't going to lose any races. It that is even tried it will be one heck of a knock down drag out court battle.
State of the sport speeches are just propaganda and PR spin.

One car for short tracks, one for larger. Agree you pull back the aero on both the front and the downforce heavy spoiler in the rear. For next gen continue this but refine the shape so the short track car is as close to pure stock on the body as you can get. Have the larger track car add aero but only as minimally as necessary to keep the stock body appearance.

I don't care what they do, but if they left it alone, that would be fine too. I worry about NASCAR responding to the quick click babble. The racing has been great all year. I continue to worry about NASCAR's ability to process information in this digital world. I would leave everything alone because it will all change in 2021 anyway. This is such a great sport.

I really enjoyed the racing this season. Sure there were boring parts or boring races but there never isnt. If they can do something to make it even better thatd be great!

I agree--and not just because WE won everything. BTW.....tell the former Champion to get his lips off of Kyle's trophy. :D

The fact the are acting on the short tracks is great, I appreciate they are taking the criticism from fans, drivers, and teams alike.

Let's not forget about the super speedways in Pocono and Michigan, they need tinkering as well. Maybe a bit more grunt for those tracks and @ChexOrWrex brought up a great point. NASCAR's hands are tied because the teams did not want multiple packages.

Maybe from a cost stand-point, the team owners did not care for it? This is why its important to find a something that everyone can agree on, yet be cost effective. It has to be tough to satisfy everyone, I give Phelps credit for being quite open to input. His boy O'Donnell on the other hand...

Which is one of the reasons I have NEVER been a supporter of the RTA. It's OK to get input, but at some point you have to have a dictator, hopefully a benevolent one, but an absolute dictator who can and will put their foot down and say "This is the way its going to be boys, if it don't work for you, the door's over there." The product MUST come first. Without that, the rest of this is just academic.

That doesn't sound like an RTA issue. That's weak leadership on NASCAR's part, an inability or unwillingness to put that foot down. Let's remember who was (not) running the show when the RTA was formed.
