Matty K to the 42

Ya know, I can't help but think Roush probably called Matt about the #6 when Newman went out. If that was the case, Matt obviously said no. So why say yes to Ganassi? Was it just that the #42 is a full-season ride vs. a seat-warmer of unknown duration, or was there something else?

Gosh, it's shaky out here on this limb.

Such a safe move.

These owners don’t give enough chances to young drivers. Should have been Ross’s spot.
I mean Kenseth and Kurt Busch will be a very smart duo. Former teammates with a lot of experience between themselves in working together.

Not to mention Matt will be an easy sell for sponsors until Chip is ready to find a true, long-term driver. He (Chip) likes winners and Kenseth certainly is that. @Charlie Spencer might have to update the ol avatar.:D

Ross and his sponsors are committed to Kaulig and the Xfinity points title, first and foremost. The incumbent sponsors are good with Kenseth and they and the team don’t have to worry about buying out anyone or anything with Kaulig.

Kenseth is 48. This doesn’t mean Chip is punting on Ross. It’s obviously a short-term arrangement and one that makes sense for all parties involved.

lol what. This sport has been INUNDATED by young guys the past ten years. There are plenty of rides in the top 3 series is you're under 25...
In recent memory Suarez got the shaft from SHR to keep Bowyer. Mind you they brought in Custer but I think they’d be more successful in 3-5 years with Custer and Saurez rather than holding onto wheel holders.

Chastain performed well enough in the #6 that he’d do just fine in the #42, arguably better than an older driver out of race shape who is only in the seat due to sponsor money.

Kenseth is not going to be that out of it, honestly. I mean a lot of those sponsors are crucial to Ganassi for long-term financial health. You have to improve relations after that mess.

Trust me I love the young guys getting opportunities, but Kenseth has probably the least chance to mess it up, not to mention he's a steady hand.

Absolutely floored. Did NOT expect this, but I'm very happy. Kenseth is one of my childhood faves.

Well, I have to admit I don't understand that move at all. Instead of trying to improve the team and solidify the driver lineup for 2021, they decided on a seat warmer. As far as this season goes, it "sort of" works, but at the end of the year you are no better off than you were before. Nothing against Kenseth, but you KNOW he won't be in that car in 2021, so you just wasted most of a year.

Chip wants a driver who can win today. Kenseth knows how to win a race and be fast. Ross probably does not given it'd be hist first full-ish season in a good car. It wasn't for Chase in his first season, nor Suarez, Bowman, Byron, Jones, Larson, Blaney...

There, they got plans for Ross. So everyone should be happy now.

He always did, Chastain is just committed to the Xfinity series atm.

Tugging my heart strings in trying to bring Carl back, that would have been amazing.

@ChexOrWrex I read you. Chip needs a good face to improve sponsor relations, I cannot be mad and judging by Fryer's tweet. It seemed like Chip wanted an experienced guy not just as a driver, but someone more mature with life and PR ability.

Exactly.

Man, that would’ve been some real earth shattering news wouldn’t it?

He has 0 experience with this team and 0 experience with the handling of this year’s car. He can adapt but he won’t be an immediate threat.

I loves me some Melon Man, but Kenseth makes it easy for Chip to work on rebuild sponsor relationships. Chip doesn't have to worry about him or Kurt, on or off track. With potential funding issues, a one-year driver who can bring the car home in one piece, finish better, and probably make the Chase is a better fit than developing a driver and all the attendant costs. Matt will only be there one year, Ross can concentrate on the X championship, and the #42 will still be there in 2021.

I'm not sure man, he drove the 6 car to two top tens in 2018 after half a season of driving it... and that car makes the 42 look like a 2007 Hendrick car in comparison regarding its competitiveness.

Give Kenseth a school bus in the Indy 500 he could probably get it to finish on the podium

Now for my own selfish fandom I wish it was Jeff Gordon who got the 42. But in all seriousness excited to see Matt racing again and am jealous of his fans who get to see him race pretty much the whole year once things get going again.
