I misstated the fact in my original post. Miami-Dade County is paying up for the honor, not the track.

Nothing new about the championship being moved around. If Miami paid to get it, I hope they also understood it was a one-time deal. As to wanting the last race being for a championship, I don't care what they spent money in hopes of getting. They were fine with being the last race under the 'ten race' format. There was a time when Miami Homestead was lucky to remain on the schedule.

I think that it is important to note that Denny considers those who like the current system in favor of mediocrity.....didn't necessarily say that those who have won it necessarily are...but I know we have a narrative, right?

Denny rattled off four drivers who he thinks favor a full season, and then said everyone else favors the playoffs.
For people like myself, William Byron, Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney, Tyler Reddick... I think we're all for bigger sample sizes. If I didn't list your name, of course you love a 1-race format.

How many more did he overlook? He should have wanted to be careful before making statements collectively throwing everyone he forgot under the bus.

Denny the driver, Denny the owner, Denny the podcaster. Like 'Good, Fast, Cheap', pick two.
 
Are we doing a thing now where actually the majority of fans want playoffs but in lieu of actual evidence it's "all the people who haven't been polled want it"? I just want to make sure I get what's happening.

The only people who want the full season are those Denny named. If Denny didn't explicitly name you personally, you want playoffs.
 
The original Chase format, or at least a modified version of it (12 drivers?), is the obvious compromise. A full season championship isn't going to fly in our world full of instant gratification.
 
If you do the original Chase then you need to increase the points spread from 1-10. The original incarnation was only 45 points (or roughly 10-12 points in the current points system). It was probably the worst system for rewarding full season performance. With the exception of the winner take all final (which would be remedied in a 3-3-4 format), the current playoffs do a better job.

Playoffs will never work in motorsports. It was a dumb experiment and the novelty has worn off.

I felt the same way. I wasn’t looking forward to the last 10 races so I didn’t play close attention to them.

After the Xfinity field went bonkers over "as fast as Xfinity internet" for $600 a pop, I say we give $5,000 to the 20th place driver at halfway and let the mid-pack absolutely go at each others throats. I'd imagine it would devolve into kill-the-carrier. NASCAR could get a GUARENTEED caution, stages be damned. Imagine Daniel Dye, Anthony Alfredo, Jeremy Cements, Kyle Seig, and Blaine Perkins all dueling it out racing/brake checking each other to get the "Lucky Runner $5k Award presented by Chumba Casino".

Just keep stage points for 1-10 as they are now. But inverted. 10 for 10th place 9 for 9th etc. Kind of like the old all star races. Playoff point is awarded via random draw between spots 5-10.
