More importantly, he didn't need any help from the FIA to be in contention. He was the best driver and car and accumulated more points than anyone else. Sounds like the guy who should be champion to me.
That's part of the deal in return for funding, yes.
Then it's not likely for them to put in a sub if a driver who locks up the title early or just wants to take a week off. Between that requirement, sponsorship obligations, and part-time teams being uncompetitive, there's little justification for worrying about the eventual champion having voluntarily skipped races during the season.

Fair, and a good point. With that being said, he screwed fans of the races he missed by not being there....but I get it, that is a different conversation. Of course, I love that Toyota won, but I hate the way he did it.
That part i definitely can agree with. Im sure his fans definitely were disappointed he didn't show up, I know I would be if I went to a race and someone I'm a fan of didn't show.
That would be awful.
