Jimmie and Chad always cheat lolzzz!!!

And yes I saw that the article was discussed on the pre-race thread, but I'd like to know people's opinions on messing with safety devices.

Just kidding...

What do you guys think of teams altering safety devices to gain an advantage as opposed to altering performance parts? Should NASCAR come down harder on teams that mess with the safety of the cars?

I don't know all about that, but those guys in the picture sure look like they have been busted. Ah my guess is that they tweaked the flaps somehow to make the cars faster. I don't remember so many getting busted at once, that might be a record..with the 400 million needed for the remod at daytona..could be a big payday..might name a lobby after them. or carburetor..injector..whatever they call em.o_O

"The Illegal Roof Flap Grandstand"

Wow. As StandOnIt alluded to, that's a ton of teams that got caught breaking the same rule at the same time. Very interesting.

I do think the penalties should be harsh when messing with the safety equipment on the cars. Mind you, I have no idea whether or not the alterations in question in this particular case would have made the cars more unsafe, but in theory, anytime you mess with the safety equipment, you could be decreasing the effectiveness of said equipment. I would hate to see a driver get seriously hurt or worse because a team decided that safety for speed was an acceptable trade-off on that particular day.

Also we cant rule out that it was a bad batch of parts.. either that or jack roush is in the garage area ..." hey!.. hey joe, roger.. come here for a sec." *opens jacket to display illegal spacers* "I got some new stuff guaranteed to do the job, whatta ya say only $100 a gram underweight"

Posted this in the other thread.

Holy crap, 31 teams may be penalized at once, wonder if that is a record and if it comes out that they were a little high in the back to create downforce, not good news at all.

Teams have been finding ways to gain an advantage since the start of Nascar. They all do it. Now as far as safety goes Nascar puts the plates on them, wont let them tandem draft , wads them up in a big Pack where cars cant break away from one another, and we wait on the BIG ONE. That can't be safe. Just a thought.

From an article I read:

The flaps are supposed to lay flat on the roof and hood. They deploy during an accident to keep a car from becoming airborne.
If the roof flaps don’t lie perfectly flat, it would allow air to be sucked into the ****pit.
Teams have long attempted to find ways to draw air into the ****pit by not sealing rear windows, trunk decks or the rubber boots for the shifter.

Something I can agree with. I just can't see 16 teams cheating, all on the same part at the same time.

As long is it's only their own safety which is being compromised, I say have at it.
It's the roof flaps. When somebody gets air, it's gone beyond their own safety. It can easily affect the other cars, and I'll bet not all of the lawsuits from February's N'wide debacle have been settled yet. I think we'll see safety equipment join the existing Holy Trinity of fuel, tires, and engines as things that are beyond the gray area and well into the realm of 'Touch these and they'll be calling you 'Stumpy'."

The teams were impressed with Gibb's trick tires on Hamlin's ride last week, so they all have teamed up this week with Gibbs to end the JJ/ Hendrick dominance of restrictor plate tracks. The Gibbs Ninja/boomerang flap has been developed and distributed to teams this week . The flap can be used for convenient debris cautions, or if a car can get in front of the leading Hendrick, the flaps can be released by spotters above for a radiator/grill shot.

Understood.

Though, it's a tricky situation with safety. Nascar mandates restrictor plates to keep speeds down for safety reasons and most people hate them while drivers/CC's are constantly trying to find ways to go faster with them - knowing full well that's it about safety

It's only been a few years since Jimmy Spencer stopped wearing an open face helmet, the last driver by a few years to do so.

Yeah, but they aren't allowed to alter the plates themselves.
NASCAR just announced that penalties have been handed out, all 31 teams must get upside down at Daytona..
Big deal. Most of them were going to wind up that way anyhow.

Not sure if this topic deserves its own thread but its jammin up the pre race thread.

I dont have much to say about it just figured I throw this out there.

I think it's stupid and they should get penalized but how much? A hefty fine, take away some owner points not driver points if they can do that..

I'd say it depends whether it was intentional or a bad batch of parts. They'll figure that out throughout the weekend. Im sure we'll hear a lot about this over the next few days.

Man, this is crazy.

I guess if drivers get hefty penalties like I think they will, the good news is there is so many other teams getting penalized they wont hurt THAT much...

I don't think much is going to happen myself, there are too many of them, and not knowing the whole story, they could have had cars that were modified that were already passed to race before. Also the cars weren't racing yet, so the advantage was caught in tech before they competed...Chad and Jimmy ratted them out.:sarcasm:
