Restrictor Plates At Charlotte?

Not just Charlotte.. but all intermediate tracks... and it's not exactly a "restrictor plate" .. but similar.

NASCAR will have a test at Charlotte Motor Speedway Dec. 9 to determine the 2014 rules package. NASCAR is looking at ways of approving racing on intermediate tracks. One of the possibilities is a tapered spacer — a thick version of a restrictor plate — that is used in Nationwide and trucks.


Thoughts?

I think its a great idea! As fans were not going to notice a few mph being shaved off.. however we will all notice if they run closer together and there's more passing.. imo this ideas a winner.

Trying to change the laws of physics didn't change the racing. They made the cars too aero-dependent and now whenever the cars get too fast (see also Michigan 2012) or can't pass one of the first considerations is to put a damn plate on it.

Well I dont see them dialing the actual engines back... I think it'll be good .. at least until they figure something else out.
 
What if they actually use a different engine? I mean instead of a V8 with 800hp, why not a V8 with 700hp?
 
Doesn't impress me a bit to hear "a new track record". The car is a great improvement, 10 MPH less will make it a fender banging monster. Even up the field, and if it does for the Cup cars what it does for the trucks and the N'wides there will be a lot more side by side racing.
 
Just have NASCAR build the entire car from bumper to bumper and instead of qualifying, have the drivers play bingo for a car and a starting spot.

Hell, call it IROC just to make it shorter and easier to remember. :rolleyes:
 
Well I dont see them dialing the actual engines back... I think it'll be good .. at least until they figure something else out.

Cup cars have way to much power. The racing will be awesome with 150 less horsepower. IMO
Go watch the nationwide series then. The racing is already awesome. Passing is the problem. Dirty up the aero instead of killing power

Me thinks you got it backwards. The trucks are a rolling billboard and with out a doubt they provide some of the best racing action.

I do watch the Nationwide series and the racing is awesome. I will continue to watch them all as usual though
 
Yeah but they cant make the cars like that... I tihnk takin out some HP will help.

That is exactly what the plate does, it takes HP away.

Years ago NASCAR allowed a range of CI displacement. Rusty Wallace ran an engine that produced less horsepower and was a smaller displacement than the rest of the cars. With different gearing he was able to run comparable speeds to the bigger engines. He tore them up on gas mileage.

Make these cars drive like a truck and the racing will get better.

It is still pretty darn good, IMO.
 
They aero the car up to make it faster, then decide they need to slow them down to make the racing interesting.:confused:

yep. And that makes the issue worse.

What is dumb, is that the cars are injected. I don't think the spacer will do piddly squat. On a carb, the spacer restricts the flow so the motor is partially choked and less fuel is delivered. With injection, you set the fuel trim based on the O2's, and the motor takes all the oxygen it wants. Like on our car, our throttle body is rated for 2100 CFM, but we had a 1050 carburetor on it at one point. The TB doesn't choke at all. Instead of using a spacer, just put smaller throttle bodies on them...it will achieve more.

Isn't the RP on the TB now? It still is physically restricting the oxygen to the engine, no?
