New Chase Format (Again)

Four different winners in the first four races so far, meaning that 4 chase berths are likely already filled. I know that the new emphasis is on winning but do we really want 25% of the chase berths already filled after only 4 races? Just asking.
 
It will stall out by the midway point of the season.

We wont have 16 different winners. I dont see it.
 
I think their is at least 16 drivers that could win tho.. Not that they will in the first 26 but excluding the first 4, next 12 guys could: JJ, Gordon, Kahne, Logano, Kenseth, Hamiln, Ky Busch, Ku Busch, Smoke, Bowyer Newman, and Biffle

Throw in Jamie Mac, Ambrose and other fringe guys.

You don't want any more new winners? That you have a problem with that blows my mind
 
This is about the chase format , not the winners . In what other form of racing is regular season points meaningless ? If there are more than sixteen winners , will the chase entry be decided entirely on regular season points ?
 
You guys need to read this year's version of "How to make it into the Chase" rules again.

The points aren't necessarily meaningless.

And officially, nobody has made the Chase yet.
 
There were about a dozen winners last year (I think - don't know). So there will be a scramble for a few positions this year.

Yes. Absolutely yes. I love how these guys are going for the win and not holding back.
 
It seems to have changed the racing, and I'm all for that.

Things I don't miss:

1) Drivers saying "It was a good points day" when they didn't win.
2) Drivers and CC's playing it safe and not going all out for the win because they are watching points.
3) Teammates giving up the lead so the other guy can lead a lap and get a point.
4) Single car qualifying. Love the new format.
5) Good drivers missing the chase because they didn't play the points game well enough.

The top 15 drivers with the most wins over the first 26 races will earn a spot in the Chase Grid -- provided they have finished in the top 30 in points and attempted to qualify for every race (except in rare instances).

A driver can be eliminated from chase eligibility simply by not attempting to qualify his car. Kenseth and Menard may want to keep that in mind.

If one of the cup drivers who compete in the NWS gets hurt and can't qualify his cup car, too bad.

Also, if after 26 races, more than 16 drivers have won a race, someone who's won a race will be on the outside looking in.

Winning a race doesn't necessarily mean that a spot in the Chase is guaranteed.

So will ,the guy who led the points all year , if he didn't win a race.

Why not? The old system rewarded consistency. That result was that teams had to calculate whether to stay in 2nd or 3rd (or whatever) vs going for first. More often than not, they played it safe for the points.

Under the new system, there isn't much to think about. You always go for the win.

It amazes me how people don't get it when many drivers have said in the past they wanted to preserve a good points day and not take risks.

Matt and Paul won't get thrown out of the Chase because they missed one qualifying session or race because they were on baby watch.

Regan Smith qualified for Jimmie at Richmond last year because his girl was born on Friday. No chance NASCAR would have DQ'd him for that.

It amazes me how some people think the drivers weren't doing all they could to win before, and think now they're really trying to win as if they weren't before.

I've never heard any driver say they could have possibly won, but decided to play it safe and finish 2nd for a good points day.

BS. If a driver thinks he might win he's going for it. They all want to win. No driver would back off and take a 2nd place finish if he's that close to a win.

It has nothing to do with the new point system.

I think everybody but Jeff :-) (see other thread) has been trying to win in previous years, but 2nd aint what it used to be. So they feel free to take more risk, in some respects it like the winners pay out has been substantially increased.

I don't know what else to tell you. Even the drivers have said that under the old system they took less chances, because a DNF could ruin your season.

I know, 2nd ain't what it used to be. But the win is the ultimate goal on race day, always has been. I don't believe any driver close to a win is thinking I'll just take second place and have a good points day. :confused:

None of them would willingly take second . It might be the last chance to get a win in your career . But I guarantee that when they didn't have the car that won , they all made their owner and sponsor feel a little better by reminding them that they had a good points day. Many people misunderstand that comment.
 
Kevin Harvick is 21st in points and is in the Chase. Jeff Gordon is 4th in points and is not in the Chase. Makes perfect sense to me :rolleyes:
