Fontana RACE thread

NASCAR wants crazy finishes and that's white the G-W-C does.......best car did not win today but it takes luck sometimes.

Austin's in a far superior racecar and he'd rather finish 15th than risk wrecking a car to win a race.
He already has the mentality of Mark Martin...
He'll never win a championship with that attitude, maybe never even a race.

Oh ok FOX. Say you're going to had Gordon's interview when you get back, but never do. Cool. Douches.

I don't think Jeff was in a mood to talk. He didn't day a word on the radio after the race. After scanning Jeff Gordon for 300+ races I can say with certainty that he had nothing good to say and needed time to settle down.

I don't think it was a bad call by Gustafson for 4 tires.......but the crew needed to get him out in front of Kyle Busch. The 18 crew beat the 24 crew.

But I don't know......apparently those pumped up pressures hurt the 24. It's easy to say in hindsight he should've stayed out, but Kyle Busch won on 4 tires.

Don't blame him.......to have a car that was THAT stout and have the win 1 lap away.....to go to 13th. That's going to take time to get over.

Did you watch the race?
Gordon got screwed by these Goodyear tires that only last 20 laps. He lost positions on pit road by taking 4 tires instead of 2 and his car does not get up to speed until 10 or so laps anyhow. The GWC is the last thing Gordon needed to see and it happened. He was in 7th with a long run car on the GWC - no way he was gonna win even with a perfect restart.

I like Larson a lot too, but benefitted from the GWC.....I don't think he was in the top-5 all day before that. Still a great job, but the race really went his way at the end.

Great finish by my boy Kurt. Only a matter of time before he wins. SHR is a powerhouse, just had some bad luck and growing pains to start the year. Did anyone catch what happened with Kurt and Tony after the race? Some people though they were going to have a confrontation but looks like they got out of their cars and high fived.

I'm a big time Larson fan. Started out because I despise the Dillons and want Larson to kick Dillons ass for ROY. Like teh kids skillz more and more every race.

Not necessarily true......Johnson was the best car on new tires, but Gordon held his own on the last restart before that and he held off the rest of the field on new tires. In fact, he ran away from the field. He just wasn't quite as fast as the 48. So he wasn't bad on new tires. He was just even better on the long run.

If the pit crew could've got Jeff out as the first car of 4 tires, he might've been in a better position on that last re-start.

As is, I don't know what happened. It look like he just got blocked and was in a really bad position going into 1 on the low line and may have had to check-up and it killed him. GWCs are crazy. Stuff like that happens.

just scanned this thread after watching the race. appears some of the whiny gordon fans have decided to re-assert themselves after a few years of silence. but still the same...

who said kyle wouldn't win unless a green white checkered? great call!

and somewhere i can hear a drunken bobbyford opening another drink, completely ignoring the prospect of a three day hangover. taking pleasure in your fun bobby!

not a fan of the tire issues, but they have that track racey.

looking forward to martinsville next week. not sure what to expect considering how entertaining all 5 races have been this year. but i love the short tracks.

and if Kurt had 4 tires it would have been really interesting. I am happy though, 3rd is nothing to sneeze at.
Kurt was decent all day, but not a race winning car. Late caution played into his favor.....two weeks in a row where Tony Stewart has gotten top-5s because of staying out on late cautions with mediocre cars.

This was a crazy GWC and jumbled the running order up at the very end. The results don't necessarily reflect how everyone's car performed today.

Clint Bowyer not very happy with fans saying he spun on purpose. Calling them idiots and dipshi** LOL
He should......I'm the biggest 24 fan you'll meet, but 24 fans on social media make me sick.

It was just a bad break. Bowyer had a flat like tons of other guys today. To say he spun on purpose is beyond idiotic and makes me really embarrassed of 24 fans.

I think we all know it was gonna be a pretty good chance that somebody was going to have a flat and bring out the caution. It was a 50/50 shot of Gordon getting to the white flag under green but certainly not a surprise.

He still lost a second on track time to Johnson and it took him about 15 laps to reel him back in and only made the pass once Johnson blew a tire. Gordon never had a good 20 lap average all day. After 20 laps it was game on. Like I said, no way Gordon would win even if he had the lead with 4 freshies on that final GWC restart.

Probably less of a track issue than teams being too aggressive.

Unfortunately a number of things are probably going to happen. California will either do a repave or Goodyear will bring super hard tires and the racing won't be as good.

They need to come up with a new process when they repave these tracks.......they can't make them so smooth like a public highway.

whenever you make changes there is a ripple effect all the way down. It showed up today and caught Goodyear napping like Indianapolis a few years back. Cautions with wrecking cars every 20 laps isn't what I call a race. Works I guess if you are playing a video game, but when a 8th place car wins it because they are fast for four laps, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Doesn't happen very often to Goodyear's credit though.

So apparently nobody ran more than 20 laps on those tires in practice? Fox, Nascar were quick to mention that all 68,000 seats were sold out. Haven't heard any other track attendance this year. If it weren't for double file restarts after each time someone blew a tire it would look like I was watching a Indy Car race from years ago. Clean air really shows at those big tracks. Oh and how many times did dumb_ss DW step on his toes....

I'll pound my head into a wall if they decide the "fix" is to repave the place.

NASCAR didn't test the the COT on a surface like Indy's, and they didn't test the altered Gen-6 on a surface like Fontana's either. I think Goodyear is going to want to hold a tire test at Atlanta before September rolls around.

my point..the COT was new to Indy's diamond ground surface and the race was more of a mess than this one.

What happened to Brad btw?

After that Bowyer spin I changed the channel. He stayed out on that last caution I think.

Ya......Johnson was faster on new tires. I'm not arguing this. I already mentioned this in my last post.

Gordon never had a good 20 lap average? I take a exception to that. 24 and 48 were clearly the class of the field. I don't think there's any disputing that. Alan deserves a lot of credit. Check that, a TON of credit, for the car they brought this weekend. If not for just a simple caution flag 1 lap later, we'd all be jumping up and down, yelling our heads off on cloud 9 right now.

Like I said.....Gordon ran away from the rest of the field on that last caution, kept the gap to the 48 within about 2 seconds and somewhere nearing 10 laps, the 24 would catch the 48 with almost a snap of the fingers. That happened at least the two runs before that and every time Gordon would catch Johnson and try to make the pass, a caution would come out.

I don't know what happened on that last run but Jeff caught Jimmie like we all expected, then all of a sudden Gordon said he had a vibration and lost 2+ seconds on Johnson. I don't know what the vibration was but I think it's another reason why they brought the car in to pit on the last caution.

Great day today. Enjoyed watching the 24 pass 350 cars. But gotdamn that yellow with two to go. ****! This traffic sucks.

Austin's in a far superior racecar and he'd rather finish 15th than risk wrecking a car to win a race. I wish every race was like today's race - where tires separate talent from money. The three most talented drivers 1-2-3.
I dont get why you say Austin is in better equipment... There is a Hendrick engine under Larsons hood.

Yeah Johnson, Gordon, blah blah. They were only two out of about 10 that got screwed out of a good finish because of blown tires and parts failure..At least fix the bumps, this isn't a 4wd truck race, they are running over 200 mph.

I was agreeing with you lol.
yeah I hear ya, Indy was worse though IMO, but I think this race is second

Overall was an entertaining race....but those tire things ALWAYS seem to leave an asterisk beside of the races that they impact....they really need to get that deal figured out.

As a Gordon fan, of course I am not thrilled with the end...but I was very happy to see Larson get in there and mix it up at the end....woudla loved to seen the kid sweep Cali....

I try not to get into the "network bashing" stuff...but Fox was HORRIBLE today...EVERY TIME there was a battle for the lead...we had to go to commercial...and DW...man, make up your mind! He talks out of both sides of his mouth NON STOP!
