NASCAR stages road course test at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Or we could wait, watch the first race and see what's what.

Simplified

I could wait until the next time it rains to see if it's wet, but I already know that. If rovals were the answer, natural terrain road courses would have went the way of the dodo long ago. Ask 100 dedicated road racing fans, and 95 will tell you rovals suck.

You already KNOW a lot of things. Some of us are content to give it a chance. Time will tell.

Happily, we'll all be able to enjoy Kyle at the Derby while we're waiting.

I can only guess that by having the two set up the way they are, it'll cause them to have to let up earlier to head into that one coming out of the turn #4. Again, I don't know a thing about road course design. I'm guessing those that are behind these changes do. There must be a reason that they feel it necessary. I yield to their collective knowledge.
Can’t say for sure with the music but it sounded like he wasn’t braking until he was through the banking already.

Normally I would agree with you, but slow road courses suck, and stock cars , due to the weight, tire size and brake limitations makes any road course slower. Speed and momentum is a big part of what makes Watkins Glen so great.
What makes you think Charlotte will be a slow road course?

Just an observation based on watching hundreds of road course races from LeMans to Putnum Park for the last 35 years. Hell, the track has three Sonoma turn 11's in a row. This track would frustrate an IMSA DPi car, let alone a Cup car. Too much track in too little space. Turn 7 should just be eliminated, and the front stretch chicane totally kills the momentum into turn one.

Its the same size as the Glenn with a nice straight down the back much like the Glenn before the bus stop and if they leave the chicane close to turn 3 will have a nice sweeping left hander. Infield is more Sonoma based but all in all their will be plenty of places to pass and some very technical corners. Should be great.

I wonder who designed / re-designed the thing?
I believe it was collaborative effort.
“The opportunity for a last-lap pass in true road racing fashion is what put me over the top with the chicane,’ Smith said. “I resisted it at first. I thought we didn’t need it. But we had great discussion with NASCAR and other manufacturers, drivers and designers that thought it would provide a signature opportunity for great passing and great racing and great competition.”

Try to shade your optimism, k?

It has no place here.
No place at all. Probably wind up like that Stage Racing thingy

Most of the chicanes I know of are more famous for crashes than passes.

Not a big fan of Sonoma. As far as I'm concerned, every change they have made there has made the racing worse. I liked the original 1989 layout best. The Rusty/Ricky battle that year was a classic if you love road racing.

My opinion of both are about the same. :moon:

Come on, I've seen a thousand passes at the Glenn in the bus stop that never resulted in a crash and produced a great run down the right hander.

Why wait for the race itself when we can all speculate on the race now?

Isn't that what 50% of all forum discussion is, speculation? If we are not going to speculate on this race, let's also stop speculating on who will win the championship, what Danica will do next year, when Chase will win a race, who RPM will team up with, and whether BK Racing finishes the season.

I'm pretty sure someone in this thread was not in favor of the Ningbo circuit.

Interesting.

The Cadillac DPi ran a 24-hour test at Charlotte last year, before all of the modifications. I'd like to see what that looked like.

Not a road course fan, but I will watch like I always do. Hell, I went to Sonoma. I might go again. Why? Because a day with this sport is better than a day without. Every. Damn. Day.
Looks like you could use one of these today.....

Like to see a IMSA race here. Maybe 12 hr deal or something and name it after Johnny Stevenson.

I was very sad to see Stevenson leave racing. They were a good team and nice people. I loved those big hog Grand Am GT Camaros. The sound was out of this world and it was great to see them mix it up with more nimble cars. Only bad luck prevented them from winning a championship with them. A couple of years ago at Indy, they invited my dad and I behind the ropes to check out the cars top to bottom. I was hoping GM would keep them in the fold and give them another program after the Camaro deal ended. Alas, it was not to be. I was never a fan of the Audi, but you do what you had to do. I worked on Fords for awhile, so I can't throw stones.

Boyer running thru there, looks damn fast enough to me. I do see them running thru the grass at the last kink in the front chicane. Easy to straighten that corner out.

I'm with you on that front stretch hunk of AstroTurf. I wonder what kind of traction they'll get on that?

In the clip I posted Boyer got into 4th gear and ran it up there almost to the chip a couple of times if I am counting shifts right. I'd say some where between 120 and 150 MPH would be my guess. down to 2nd on the back chicane.
