Holding A Pretty Wheel: Stage Racing Changes the Game In a Good Way

Lead changes have always been the best way to measure competitiveness. Setting aside Daytona where we are very beholden to the current rules package, lead changes are down this season: Atlanta: 28 in 2016, 9 in 2017 -19 Las Vegas: 20 in 2016, 14 in 2017 -6 Phoenix: 7 in 2016, 15 in 2017 +8...

ISC cites attendance decline in recent Cup events - Increase in some younger demographics

“We’re seeing the rate of decline slow, which is good news,’’ Saunders said to investor analysts. When you are having to present a slowing collapse as a positive, that is Baghdad-Bob level spin.

    Lot of empty seats today

I can't believe fans aren't coming out in droves for the fake cautions! Clearly, this means we need 10 segments rather than 3. Or perhaps each lap can be each own segment. 500 races in 1!

Setting the stage: Racing renewed under new format

This is the first year that I can remember that I will be watching MLB instead of the race. I have tolerated the stages to some extent, but it really is quite absurd. I haven't quit Nascar like I thought I would, but I definitely feel myself moving away from the sport I've loved since I was a...

Burton: ‘Fans were cheated’ when Jimmie Johnson chose not to qualify at Fontana

For those that don't like this (it doesn't really bother me), blame the stages in addition to the tires. When you know a fake caution is coming after 60 laps, the chance of a top team getting lapped is very low. Under the old full race system, I'd wager JJ would have made it out to qualify.

Burton: ‘Fans were cheated’ when Jimmie Johnson chose not to qualify at Fontana

I bet fans get more out of seeing Johnson drive up from the back than from watching him ride around the track by himself to qualify 25th. Last year at the Chicago race, Harvick started near the rear. It was a lot of fun watching him pass cars lap after lap.

    Following the NASCAR points..... pointless?

Isn't the regular season champ getting some sort of bonus this year? I was engaged in my futile attempt to abandon NASCAR in the off-season, so didn't keep up as much...

    2017 Martinsville - STP 500 - Pre Race Thread

You'd think a short track close to home would be the most likely to draw out some additional teams. Low travel cost and less(essentially none at Martinsville!) aero dependency.

NASCAR WAGs (&Sisters) Complaining About The Monster Girls

Wasn't this more a complaint about that red carpet and music than the girls? I don't know the context, but it does seem pretty odd when the track is completely empty (unless it is for a TV ad or something).

    Rate the race: Fontana

Basketball is the only sport I have 0 interest in, even during March Madness when every person who hasn't watched a college basketball game all season suddenly becomes obsessed and claims to be an expert.

    Rate the race: Fontana

    9. Some good battles, interesting finish, best car won.

Glad the fastest car won for once.

I think they left before the race started.

Man, I really wanted to see if that would work out for Elliot. Would have looked like his dad at Talladega coming up 2 seconds a lap faster.

    Elliot problem or shortpitting?!

They're having to get all their sponsored segments in at the end due to the lack of cautions.

    Cup RACE thread --- California

End of this race would be interesting on really old tires if it's allowed to play out (eg if Brain has fallen asleep).

    Cup RACE thread --- California

BTW, no way Brain lets this run caution free to the end. We saw in Atlanta that he would still use the phantom debris caution despite corrupting the racing with planned cautions.

    Cup RACE thread --- California

10 years into the wave around, and they still talk about the risk of shortpitting. Outside of the tracks where you lose two laps, there is essentially no risk.

Lol at Truex "victory lane in a hundred-some laps." No idea only 80 laps left in race. Guess better than thinking there were less than 80 left!
