Added couple small pieces of old roof OSB to a shelf. It made a difference. Guess just build about 18" wall on other side and cover it with OSB or plywood. Possibly just make shelves on that side too. That will definitely help the lateral strength.

EDIT: Another time expired... Actually can build half an X at old rear wall location. Run the upper part to rafters. Surely that will do something. Worst case put a wall of sorts in. With it covered with OSB/pegboard would add lateral stiffness. Lord knows my lateral could use some stiffening.
