2016 Watkins Glen - Cheez-It 350 at the Glen - Pre Race Thread

My brother & I used to go to this race all the time before I got married. This one was one of the most memorable ones for all the wrong reasons. We were sitting at the bottom of the hill, turn #2, leading up into the esses. We only had a view of the cars going down into turn #1 then head on, down the hill towards us in turn #2, finally up through the esses on to the back stretch. While we didn't have a view of the tragedy that unfolded at the end of the backstretch that day, we listened to it on our FM headsets. This was the day we lost JD McDuffie. His death that year brought about the 'bus stop' at the end of the backstretch that is there today. I believe he was also the last driver that was killed during a Cup race until the day we lost Dale Earnhardt.

McDuffie died in 1991. It was the week before the epic Jarrett/Allison duel at Michigan.

Do you camp there? I need some good info on camping @ the track.
Only camped there once by the inner loop and I liked it but this was 10 years ago so I may not be the best to ask. The crowds start rolling in tues/wed and it was somewhat of a find your own space Rv or not.

We stay right on Seneca lake about 10 minutes from the track which I also highly recommend.

That is a beautiful area up there.

Remember, the Olympics start on Friday. The race will not be televised on the normal networks.

For those of you that may get lost this weekend.....

SUNDAY, AUG. 7:

ON TRACK

-- 2:30 p.m.: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Cheez-It 355 at The Glen (90 laps, 220.5 miles), USA Network (Follow live)

Commence with the b!tching.
I have no hope for anyone who thinks that NASCAR is bigger worldwide than the Olympics.

Well there are going to be those that find it very frustrating that they will now have to learn where the USA Network is on their television dial, err, channel lineup. Then, there will be those that will be upset that it will be going out to a limited audience.

For me, it's not a huge deal. With Dish Network's Hopper 3 system, I can divide my screen up into four sections. Each of those can broadcast a different channel. I'll be multitasking, err, viewing.

Are you just kidding or for reals? Coz me and @BobbyFord will obviously be at Vegas and Fontana but I may squeeze in Phoenix with little persuasion. :D
That would be awesome!
At least there's very little chance of those three getting rained out. :D
Yep. I was gonna let you guy's know when we know for sure. Gotta go check ya'll out. :D

Record crowds possible for NASCAR at Watkins Glen: Racing returns to the Watkins Glen this weekend, and they're talking about setting records. "We hope to break our record attendance this weekend," said Watkins Glen International president Michael Printup. "It's looking good so far, but knock on wood, you never know how ticket buyers are going to react over the next five days." At most tracks, NASCAR has been a disappointment. TV ratings are declining and NASCAR hasn't provided attendance estimates since 2012 because the numbers are discouraging. But not at Watkins Glen. "You've seen some decline in attendance at other race tracks. Indianapolis is down. Michigan was down in June," Printup said. "We haven't seen that. We hope that we can uphold that and we'll see another huge crowd at Watkins Glen this weekend."

I'm still easing into this whole Toyota thing!
's okay, I'm still sporting a '03 Ford at a decommissioned track.

Oh, hell, even I don't think that. I have no use for the Olympics at all, but I realize that's just me. Networks give priority to what they think will draw the most viewers / sell the most advertising / make the most money. I have no hope for anyone who doesn't understand that.

I'd be willing to bet more households get USA than NBCSN. From that angle, it's actually an improvement.

I may have asked this before, but are you using the wired or wireless Hoppers? If the wireless ones, how do you like them? What kind of range do they have? Any streaming / buffering issues? I'm reasonably happy with Dish's service, but I'm thinking of upgrading my hardware.

Thanks.

So Gordon is in the 88 thru Bristol. Give the man a waiver!
"You're a funny guy. I like you. That's why I'm going to kill you last."

My setup is a 4K Hopper 3 with three wireless Joey's. The Hopper 3 has a router type of box used for the Joey's. I have not tried the wireless Joey any further than about 50' from that box. I do move one of them in and out of our house by the pool, patio or hot tub and they work great. Full HD too.

No buffering issues or any other issues. They work exactly like the base unit.

Just for upgrade info only. I have an additional 4K Joey. It did not come in a wireless version when i upgraded. They may now.

Feel free to pm me any questions you have.

That's plenty of good info. I'll probably put the Hopper on the bedroom set that will never be moved, and a Joey on each of the living room and garage TVs. We rearrange the LR a lot, and I want to take the garage set out on the deck when weather permits. Both are less than 50' from the bedroom.

Thanks!

You shouldn't have a problem with that layout. Keep in mind that the Hopper has to be sitting in a location where it is wired directly to the dish.

I have been critical of Sonoma, but not this week. Watkins Glen is fabulous rewarding the talent. Kyle says they will slide around with the hard Goodyear tire, and I believe Truex spoke reduced wheel hop potential. Brakes could be big. I can't freakin' wait (like usual).

On this day in 1957, Buck Baker scored his 33rd career NASCAR Grand National Series win @ Watkins Glen.

I miss seeing Ambrose running Watkins Glen (he almost won it 3 times in a row). Last I heard he stepped away from his ride last season because he wasn't competitive enough in the V8 Supercar series he ran before NASCAR.

Remember it well....a new NASCAR competition experiment. Oil the track. The 2 had not a damn thing for the 18 in that race (nor the 9), but it will never be remembered that way. Cost Kyle the Chase.

Thinkin' '09. Allmendinger in the 44 and the junior sedan series developmental driver, Elliott Sadler, in the 19. Both Petty cars.

17 was Kenseth with Roush. The 31 was Burton, RCR. Ain't sure but it could be Blaney behind the 44.
