2017 Michigan - Pure Michigan 400 - Pre Race Thread

I want that Heritage Trophy that they give to the winning manufacturer. Want it bad.

When not if IMO, and yeah, he will be tough to beat, but I like our speed, and I like the 78 head to head with Larson. The X factor is Cole Damn Pearn.
Pearn/Truex and Kez/Wolfe are the two best CC/driver combos in the sport right now

Michigan will drag tires on track again

Michigan International Speedway, in consultation with NASCAR, is again dragging tires to help provide teams more grip for this weekend's races, but there are a couple of changes, NBC Sports has learned.

Tires will not be dragged to the wall as was done for the June race. Instead, tires have been dragged from the top of the bottom groove up about 24 feet - three widths of the Tire Dragon. That would take it about two-thirds of the way to the wall.

Also, the track has been able to spend more time dragging tires. The process for this weekend's race began July 14. While the track has not been able to drag tires every day, it has done so most days. By adding rubber, the goal is to provide drivers with more grip in multiple lanes, allowing drivers to use more of the track.

There are no plans to treat the track with a traction compound.

Funny how the 42 has declined since he got hosed by NASCAR. Maybe their was more happening than a loose hose.

I think it was the radioactive from the last Michigan race where Chase had a radio transmission when he was behind the 42 where he implied that Larson's car was doing something out of the norm in the corners. Idk exactly what was meant by it or if he even meant it in a cheating sort of way, but there could have been something to it.

I fully expect this one to be between the 42, 78, and 24 at the end.

It will be interesting to see if there is a performance drop off on the 77/78 bunch after Erik got slapped in Pocono. Same thing happened to the 2/22 after Richmond.

yeah I think he said he wished he had a camera. IMO the Yota's are making time with their front end so about all the rest of them know it can out corner them and that gives them speed on the straights. Jr has said they are all using the same thing underneath the Toyota's that everybody else is using. Same springs same shocks etc.

100% agree. Kyle complained a ton early about nose weight. They got it sorted. David Wilson always talks about corner speed flattering horsepower.

TIRE CODES

Tire: Goodyear Eagle Speedway Radials

Set limits: Cup: 4 sets for practice, 1 set for qualifying and 7 sets for the race

Tire Codes: Left-side -- D-4702 Right-side -- D-4726

Tire Circumference: Left-side -- 87.52 in. (2,223 mm) Right-side -- 88.66 in. (2,252 mm)

Minimum Recommended Inflation: Left Front -- 22 psi, Left Rear - 22 psi; Right Front -- 57 psi; Right Rear -- 54 psi

Storyline - Multi-zone Matters at Michigan: Michigan International Speedway is the highest speed track on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup circuit, with speeds at the end of the straightaway reaching 212 mph. All that speed generates heat in the tires, so to combat that, Goodyear brings its multi-zone tread tire to Michigan. The multi-zone tire features two compounds, with one on the inboard two inches of the tread that is tougher and more heat resistant to combat the high operating temperatures and protect the part of the tread that takes the most abuse and runs the hottest. The second distinct compound is across the outboard 10 inches of the tread and is "softer" to provide more grip.

"When we brought the multi-zone tread tire to the Racing Division in 2013, high-speed tracks like Michigan are what we had in mind," said Greg Stucker, Goodyear's director of racing. "The speeds that these Cup cars run at big tracks like Michigan generate a lot of heat in the tires. With the camber that teams build into their set-ups, the tire runs only on the inboard edge of the tire all the way down the long straightaways. Running the tougher compound on the inboard allows us to
run a more tractive compound on the outboard so cars will have maximum grip through the corners."

Notes: While teams in NASCAR Cup and Camping World Truck Series will run the same right-side tire code (D-4726) at Michigan this week, they will run distinct left-side tire codes . . . this is the same combination of tires that Cup teams ran at Michigan in June . . . Michigan is the only track at which Cup teams run this left-side code (D-4702) . . . in addition to here, Cup teams did run this right-side code at Las Vegas earlier this season . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Michigan . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

It's hard for me to believe the difference in right vs. left side tire pressure.

I'm glad somebody actually reads these things. :D

The high banks of Michigan ...

Fontana in May, 2017:

Minimum Recommended Inflation (Cup):
Left Front -- 19 psi; Left Rear -- 19 psi;
Right Front -- 45 psi; Right Rear -- 42 psi

I used to post them back in the day. People never commented on them so I stopped. I think it's interesting to read each week, hence the 'likes'.

Yeah, I know why there's the difference but it's the extreme that surprises me. Then again, I couldn't set up a car if my life depended on it. I was the guy in the race simulator games that did the best he could with the default setups or downloaded those that were available on the net.

I actually like Rick better doing T&F, he was actually an exceptional athlete if I recall so he wasn't just recycling catchphrases.

This Australian still? Was hoping Rick Allen would be back. Just doesn't feel like NASCAR listening to a foreigner.
