2018 Charlotte - All Star - Pre-Race Thread

"Restricted Open Engine"; isn't that a contradiction? What does 'Open' mean in this case?

I was thinking the same exact thing, that is quite weird. Maybe, a restriction to possible modifications to the engine in certain areas? A specific window to meet w/o violating rules NASCAR hands out?

If, it means getting rid of tapered spacers, I'm all for it.

I understand the 'Restricted' part of the phrase; that's plates. I don't know what 'Open' means, although it obviously DOESN'T mean 'unrestricted'. Maybe they leave the hoods and fenders off?

I'll sit back and watch how this whole plate thing plays out. Maybe it'll be good or maybe not. Not a big deal since it's a meaningless made for television event. If they actually hit on to something, everyone's a winner. Well, except for those with a predisposition to plate racing in general. For those, there is no help or there's always the Fix Plate Racing Thread. They're knocking down grandstands and flattening turns there. It's all the rage.

I think they are going to take the hoods and fenders off next year. It will be a reaction to the no new noses fans.

The engine is open to allow work to be done. Restricted in the sense you cannot access the internal parts. The engine must be used for any two races without being refreshed. Heads excluded I believe, not sure.

They're not using Daytona / Talladega plate engines.

Rather, they're putting plates on regular "open" engines. Interesting experiment. At the very least, they'll require complete different fuel and ignition mapping and affluent competitors will likely have some trickery in the intake runners.

Lots of dyno time ... lots of money.

That's a lot of extra drag, especially since the streamer package requires the mandatory addition of playing cards clothes-pinned to the wheels.
He is going to spit M&M's out the sides when anybody tries to pass him. Harvick going with beer and barbecue sauce and they are all worried about that Pennzoil car.

Enjoy man, never had hot passes, but had cold passes at Pocono a few times. An experience like no other getting up close with all the cars, watching the teams at work, and meeting your favorite drivers.

If this thing works, and NASCAR doesn't implement immediately, this board will blow.

What if it is a good race -- can those rules be implemented this year?
No. The charter agreements forbid NASCAR from making significant aerodynamic changes during the season except for safety reasons. Also, it is quite possible NASCAR gets a false barometer because teams haven't been able to science out these cars.

Here's Jimmie Johnson's thoughts: "In talking to the Xfinity guys that ran the package at Indy, I think Indy might serve that package better with the long straightaways to be able to take advantage of the way the aero works on the car, but let's try. I mean, why not? There's really nothing to lose. It might not be the package we love and want, but I'm sure it will get us a step closer, and we'll continue to evolve."

A mid-week test session before this thing would have been wise. Why do that though.

90% chance of thunderstorms on Friday and an 80% chance on Saturday. More storms on Sunday and Monday. Racing the full distance will be tough for the trucks and the All Star Race.

Sure wish someone could get their 1st win so they didn't have to be in the Open next year. Would really like to see him participate in the all-star qualifying.

thanks buddy! ROWDY NATION always have to represent lol

Sorry, there's not a thing there to get me out of the recliner, and I only live a couple of hours away. I'm pretty sure that pit party and sun deck aren't included in the cost of a regular grandstand ticket, something that's conveniently not mentioned in that promo.

Fake trophy selfies? Are people really motivated by that?

LOL. Reminds me of Daytona the year after Kyle won the championship. Down at the Toyota entrance they had a replica of his Homestead car complete with a wrap that included confetti. I chuckled. Whatever floats thou boat.
