I was a little bummed this year because I would always get a PM from Johali right before the Daytona 500 asking if I would be doing this thread each year. Well my friend, indeed I am.

Same conditions as last year, I'll only be tracking Cup and Xfinity (the Truck Rate the Race threads usually have too few responses to get a good average), and only points paying events. The highest and lowest rating each week will be dropped.

Rating that will not count toward the average:
- Ratings for only part of a race (i.e. "I only saw the last 10 laps, but I give it a 7)
- Overly complicated ratings (i.e. "I give the first 40 laps a 7.5, the second 40 laps a 10, the next 50 laps an 8.3 and the last 70 laps a 5")
- Ratings for winners or TV coverage
- Ratings below 1 or above 10 will count, but they'll be counted as a 1 or a 10.
- Over-extended decimal ratings (i.e. "I give it a 7.422387263451) will only be carried out two decimal places.

I will usually post the ratings three days after that week's Cup race, so typically on Wednesday

Cup:

1. Daytona (2/16-2/17): 6.63

Xfinity:

1. Daytona (2/15): 7.19

I'm shocked at such a high Cup rating because many rated it low solely for the Newman crash

Cup:

1. Las Vegas (2/23): 8.10

2. Daytona (2/16-2/17): 6.63

Xfinity:

1. Daytona (2/15): 7.19
2. Las Vegas (2/22-2/23): 7.00

I applied one of the ratings in the Xfinity Rate the Race thread to the Cup race, as it appeared to be posted in the wrong thread.

If Cup Vegas got that high of a score I'm expecting lots of 9.5+ ratings for other tracks this year. The Vegas race as a whole was nowhere near being well above-average

I admit my rating for Vegas was affected by the contrast between it and Daytona. It was probably higher than it would have been otherwise. But let's see what Cali and Atlanta bring.

Yeah, it actually was. It was almost the perfect mile and a half race. If it finished under green it probably would've been the best mile and a half race since Chicago '18.

I'm puzzled as to how every Cup race is above a 5, meaning above average. The race and post-race threads suggest otherwise

Your error is thinking 5 is the average. 5 is the average between 1 and 10, not the average of the races rated.

The average of the Cup races rated is 7.43 after 22 races. 11 races are above that average, 13 below it.

Your error is thinking 5 is the average. 5 is the average between 1 and 10, not the average of the races rated.

The average of the Cup races rated is 7.43 after 22 races. 11 races are above that average, 13 below it.
That's the thing...5 should be considered average when people rate races, but instead it seems like mostly everyone uses 7 as the baseline; hence why the season race rating average thus far is in the 7's

There's nothing scientific about the race ratings here. Some people factor in the quality of the TV booth work or the commercial interruptions. Some people base their rating only on how their favorite driver did (or how their least favorite did). Some try to view the race as a whole. I won't give Daytona or Talladega anything higher than a 6 because I dislike pack racing.

If you're looking for a defined set of objective criteria, this ain't the place.

An average is an average. You can always scale it off of an average of 5 though, 5 out of 10 is average of 1-10, but it doesn't represent the average of the samle. The error here, would be implying the rating criteria is wrong. 7 is very much the average .
