2021 Silly Season

Anyone think that the brickyard 400 might be an audition for a possible replacement for the 48?

I mean, if they don’t have someone at least in mind, maybe they will use this as a test. If he does good, maybe. But it depends if it’s one race or two, probably wouldn’t be more than that.

Hendrick wants a vet in that car. Justin is exactly what they're looking for. It's a natural fit.

I think Justin got the ride because of the time limit and he had no other obligations to overcome.
Another point is to be able to evaluate the car. JJ is having problems so what could be said if Justin had been able to run a good race in that equipment?
Maybe next week they will be able to get a better test.

Wistfully, I was hoping Rick would put the ultimate Indianapolis ringer in the 48....5 time Brickyard champion Jeff Gordon. That would have been some news for sure. In all seriousness, maybe this is Justin’s audition for the 48 much like when Alex shared the 88 with JG in 16. I don’t think we at all had Alex as contender for the ride or maybe I’m misremembering.

Wow that’s surprising he isn’t hearing any vets. I’ll be rooting for Jones to get it, while hoping it’s not Reddick because I want him to stay at RCR. He’s their best prospect since Harvick, if they lose him itd be catastrophic
I'm cool with any 5 of those drivers listed, and if Reddick comes to HMS they can probably get someone solid to replace. Maybe JHN?

Jones and Reddick are the best choices I think. Bubba and JHN are decent, Briscoe is just a bit below them because he lacks cup experience. Allgaier would be dumb, he's much older than all those guys but not any more talented.

Reddick is my pick for the 48.

I don't see Jones going to Chevy. I see him getting shuffled out at Toyota but them doing some corporate BS to keep him out at Hendrick (like telling him he's gonna be replaced super late after a new 48 driver is already chosen/announced at Hendrick). That would follow their ruthless tactics.

Wouldn't they just swap the 20 and 95 drivers?

Reddick is not leaving RCR anytime soon.

Reddick going from a potential number one driver at Childress to one of four at Hendrick? I'll never say never but the pot would have to be awful sweet for that to happen. I think there are plenty of drivers for cheaper and with potential for a 48 replacement.

Dunno.....maybe he should stay off of Twitter?
I do not want to discuss that here, but I'll say this quickly.

If NASCAR has a promotion for drivers to speak up, why muzzle them when ot comes to defending one of his own? A best friend of his at that.

Just a thought.

Justin was always HMS backup plan incase a driver tested positive. They have been carrying around everything they need to convert a car over for him to drive. Didnt matter which driver was out he was the replacement.

What about Chase Briscoe, if he can back up the 10 wins he called, where does Tony move him to?

There is lots of speculation that Clint Bowyer will retire from driving and move into the broadcast booth after this year. But Clint now goes public with his desire to race on.

He says, "Stewart-Haas is a wonderful organization. I want to be there... I believe all the pieces of the puzzle are there." Sorry Clint, it's just my opinion but I believe the 14 team is missing one *crucial* piece of the puzzle.

There is no way Bower is in the 14 car for 2021 unless he starts winning.

IMO the only way Clint isn't in the 14 is if someone else brings more money. I just don't see anyone else out there that they could hire that you could realistically expect to put up better numbers than clint on a regular basis

I have no clue how much Clint pulls down but I suspect when compared to other drivers, he has a favorable 'salary to points / results' ratio. His sponsors eat the guy up.

I would be a little surprised if bowyer is gonna be out and retire at seasons end. I mean Custer is in a SHR cup car... he was the one obvious SHR guy in recent years I knew was gonna be moved to cup and that’s already done.

I just haven’t had the thought that Clint would be pressured out.

With the list of drivers still not locked into a 2021 ride... Brad, Jones, ect... I feel like those dominos will fall into either the ride they’re currently sitting in, or one goes to the 48... or however you personally think all that will shuffle. But I just wasn’t factoring bowyers 14 into anything honestly.

Based on Briscoe's performance, do you think Clint will stay in the 14?
It’s not for me to say. I’m just speaking as a fan here with zero inside information on the business/industry side of NASCAR but it seems Sponsorship goes into a lot of these deals now. It appears the sponsors of the 14 love Clint and are going to roll with him for the time being. If that is indeed the case then it doesn’t matter what Briscoe does in Xfinity for the rest of this year, if they want to keep the status quo in the 14 then it will stay that way. I think unfortunately money sometimes outweighs performance in this type of decision. I personally think the 10 and 14 have underperformed for a while even though Aric is showing signs of life, nobody at SHR is on the 4’s level. I think the only way Bowyer isn’t in Daytona for the 500 next year with SHR is if they have a shot at Larson.

Do you think sponsors will be ready to touch Larson next year, regardless of the car? I doubt any individual one will pick up his entire season.

I guess I could see the Chase Briscoe thing, but I guess in my imagination I was thinking it could still be a season or two off(likely one season...)

I do think bowyer is probably close to the time where he could choose to step out, but I agree that his sponsors have to really dig him being their driver while they can have him.
I see him in cup for another season or two.

truthfully, this will be a bold statement... I feel like harvick is closer to stepping out than Clint is.

Agreed. If results were all that mattered (and not sponsorship money) Briscoe would have a really good chance of being in that car next year.

And Kenseth would have been in the #20 three more years. On the other hand, we would have been deprived of the Living Legend that was John Wes Townley.
That’s complicated though. The Preacher in no uncertain terms launched Matt to keep Erik who was at the beginning of his career and didn’t want to risk losing him

I couldn’t tell ya, I’m not a sponsor. I just see Larson being in the 14 more so Briscoe if they had to make a change.. And there’s not one key sponsor picking up the 14, it’s multiple, if those folks feel Larson is worthy of a chance at redemption then bye Clint, but I agree with you about the skeptical nature of my idea. Cancel Culture is running wild in today’s world, Larson’s NASCAR career might be over.

I'm pretty sure dropping an N-bomb would have cost Larson his seat well before the current climate.
Of course that goes without saying, but I think it’s going to be a thousand times harder to get back in than say if this happened 4 or 5 years ago.

I doubt it on the salary bit. He's part of the old-brigade from the mid 00s or so. I'm sure you could put a rookie in for much less $$$.

Entire season sponsorships are pretty rare these days. I have seen Larson run several sprint car races recently and he is quite popular with the fans, have never heard any rumblings about him at all. It would seem logical to me that if 99% of the people are OK with him returning then a sponsor(s) would step up. But, I am not marketing professional. The other question to be answered is if Larson himself wants go back to NASCAR. He sure seems to be having a great time sprint car racing and his wife and son seem to be enjoying it too.
