For the non-automotive among us, the slots in the tubing have been done for years on passenger vehicles especially on front part of the cars "frame". Foam & aluminum bumpers also common. It puzzles me a bit that some of this wasn't done on the original build. Or at least after say first half-dozen cars were wrecked during actual racing. Disappointing took them 18 months to realize it could fairly easily be made better/safer.

Wasn't intending to correct you. Just wasn't sure if they've mandated no lead or? We used to spend hours melting wheel weights. Poor man weight bars.
