People are less interested in Nascar, obviously. And you can't say it's demographics changes cause the demographics haven't change 15% in a year.

Hundreds of thousands of people who watched last year didn't this year. This year interest is down across the board. Nobody is quite sure why.

I think that Brian changing the rules every year has driven off the veteran fanbase. Younger people would rather play with their X-Boxes and Playstations than watch cars go around in a circle.

NBC will do better with it or will they have it? dont fox and NBC split it?

The All-Star Race will remain on FS1 for years to come. FOX's contract is actually being extended from the first 13 points races to the first 16 points races.

i know a few fans that left nascar when j. johnson was getting all the bogus cautions, 48 team cheating every year (their claim not mine) and nothing really done about it. said all things rick hendrick seemed crooked.

Yep. I was just about to say the same thing.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I know I haven't watched a single qualifying session this year and I used to watch them whenever I wasn't working and actually had a chance to. I just have no interest in the new format. One of my younger friends feels the same way about that. I almost stopped watching completely because of the new points system until @FenderBumper suggested just watching for the individual races and not really worrying about the championship, so I've been doing that. Again, a couple of my older NASCAR buddies feel the same way. One of them has actually gone all the way and given up on watching it, though he still asks for updates on occasion. I'm sure my dad would have felt the same way we all do. He was a loyal fan but was never one for the "racing entertainment" direction NASCAR started taking in recent years.

Obviously a four or five fan sample size does not represent the entire NASCAR fanbase as a whole. Just some food for thought.

@ChexOrWrex is correct though, the younger generations are less willing to get cable TV and instead are opting for Internet TV such as Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, etc. They're also watching sporting events on streams on their computers. Which I guess is why Comcast and TWC want to kill Net Neutrality, so that they can make a buck on this emerging trend. If NASCAR was smart (which they aren't), they would start streaming the race coverage on their website and charge a subscription fee. Hel, even I stream MRN and PRN on my computer.
The Milwaukee Brewers and NASCAR are the only reason I have cable. And the times when the Packers are playing on Monday Night Football. If it wasn't for sports I wouldn't need cable at all.

I agree. I'm not going to watch qualifying anymore. I'll DVR it and watch the final 30 seconds of the final session. That's all that matters anymore. Whomever waits the longest to leave pit road will get the strongest pull and probably will the pole. I'll watch all of the road course qualifying, though.

Nobody is going to use it as long as you must pay for it. We'll just go to the same free services we've always used. The site I use is .eu as opposed to .com so US wannabe SOPA rules don't apply. NASCAR needs to figure out something like Spotify. Spotify is a free music streaming app for PC & mobile the allows the user to listen to anything they wish, 100% free, they use ad fees to send royalties to artists. Now, if NASCAR could do that with video streaming they would strike gold.

Looks like the new Chase format has done exactly what I thought it would: piss off existing fans to the point of leaving while not attracting nearly as many new fans to replace them. I know the All Star Race has nothing to do with the Chase, but the new Chase format made the ASR just another "winner take all, 2nd doesn't matter" event.

Yea honestly, most of my TV shows that I watch are either on Netflix, or I can get it off of iTunes. The only reason I have cable is for sports, and I think the cable company knows this, which is why we haven't seen a rise in sport streams.

haha. Not going to happen. It's like playing wack a mole: Squash one site, and 4 others pop-up.

That being said, NASCAR just doesn't get what today's youth wants. You can see it in the TV ratings. I wouldn't expect that to change until the France's are done sucking the sport for every dollar they can.

Yea, pretty much. The streams that I'm familiar with get wacked once in awhile, but by the time the next race rolls around, it's back up.

Just a random thought here, but would nascar ever go back to it's "strictly stock" roots, with drivers driving cars straight from the showroom. Keep the races on short tracks, go back to the pre 2004 points system, the stock cars- that would be interesting.

That would never happen for safety reasons, come on now.

I prefer to get my TV from the TV, while sitting in the comfort of my recliner --- not sitting in front of a computer.
And don't give the "get WiFi" argument --- out here in the sticks, I'm lucky to have DSL. WiFi is what dreams are made of out here.

I have satellite internet and can't do anything on it. Their data throttling is so obscene that it will cut you down to dial-up speeds if you use more than a certain amount of bandwidth in an hour.

I had satellite internet for while because my only other option was dial-up. And you are right about the throttling --- I had to be very careful.

NASCRAP needs to get FOX to clean house in the broadcast booth....ALL 6 of them need to go, they have gotten STAGNANT...It's to the point with me that I look @ jayski for the exact time the green flag drops and that's what time the tv goes on...Cannot stomach the Waltrip's any longer....and from the drop in ratings...Im not alone

Wouldn't they be littered with commercials regardless of viewership? The NFL gets amazing TV ratings and they have plenty of commercials (thank God for RedZone).

Yep it is all about what the market will pay. If all the pirated folks bought and paid for the services they wouldn't cut the commercials out, it would just be bigger quarterly earnings. Which drives the desire for an even greater earnings next quarter.

So get even bigger tv contracts, and the cable and satellite companies can just raise the prices.

Lower ticket sales drives the ticket cost down, and I wouldn't worry about the ratings either. Lower tv revenues might equate to lower cable bills, the market drives the cost. And the inflated cost is only beneficial to Frances idiocy. A self serving shark doesnt share the wealth, or trim commercials as a courtesy.

The problem I'm having is that the ISP says there's a "Free Zone" from 12am-5am where it's unmetered but they've been metering it anyways. It's the internet we have at the track. I would kill to get DSL out here. This internet is ****** awful.

it's fox-n- nbc live race content that's gettin stolen......
as they settle into long term .......solutions will happen.....always do w/ big $$ involved.

I gotta agree. The Three Stooges in the booth need to go. I prefer listening to MRN.

I have not watched qualifying either and I dont intend to watch it ever. Its just not my cup of tea.

Pirated streams aren't anywhere near as common as they were even three years ago. NASCAR can and will put a stop to it.

They're already cracking down on it more this year than in years' past.

I'd really like to see qualifying go back to the old format. I know people say it was boring but it's qualifying, it wasn't supposed to be exciting. Have you ever met a single fan who couldn't wait for qualifying?
I used to look forward to getting to the track early, grabbing a breakfast beverage and heading to my seat with my headset to watch qualifying. Brian France put an end to that habit.

Yea, when Fox Broadcast or NBC Broadcast close down one stream, 4 more pops up. They really should learn from the music industry and movie industry and adapt to emerging trends. Which is, people want stuff streamed online, I mean why do you think Netflix is so popuar, why iTunes is so popular, Kindle, Amazon Prime, Hulu, etc. Everyone wants stuff online.

Music and movie piracy accomplished a lot, I'll give you that. Not just the digital media marketplace but also the fact that you don't have to wait several months for a movie to come out on DVD/Blu-Ray. FOX Sports 1 and NBCSN are bound by carriage agreements though. If NASCAR or the networks put the races online, the cable companies can pull FS1 and NBCSN off the air.

I've said for years that the business model of cable television needs to change but it never will and the internet won't be able to fight them much longer because the cable companies dominate broadband internet and Obama's FCC is out of control with allowing mergers to create monopolies and ending net neutrality and similar laws.

yeah.....figure both fox/nbc have big plans ta monetize content across all mobile platforms too.
both scramblin ta get fs1 / nbcsn off an running now tho.

Mike Joy isn't that bad. He tries to coin some awful phrases sometimes (Really? You think "Mr. Where Did He Come From" is a good nickname?) but generally I think he's pretty good. I'd keep him.

DW plays a goofy caricature of a NASCAR good old boy race car driver for some reason and Larry Mac is a f*****g idiot. I'd sack Larry Mac and keep DW if we could get the "real" Darrell Waltrip. Where is this guy when the race is on:

You bring up a lot of points frow78 . I don't think that the cars were ever 'strictly stock' . When you remove the glass , install roll bars , soup up the engine , change the braking and cooling systems , remove the seats and dash board , etc., etc ., etc., it ceases to become stock straight from the showroom .Recently , Nascar has tried to reverse the trend by going to more 'stock appearing' cars , hopefully that will continue . Keeping the races short track , removes the diversity which reqires drivers to prove their skill against others in a variety of ways . Traditionally , they grew up racing short tracks ,in and around their home towns . When they made it to Nascar , they were ready to move on up to the big tracks against big competition and big crowds . I have to agree with you on the points system . Nascar has all but discarded it and it was a foundation laid down from the very beginning .
