Bud Shootout

See post 349.

By the way over 6 1/2 million people watched the Shootout last night.

Crap, I agreed with the Kyle and Gordon comments and missed the idiot part.

I know I'm in the minority, because NASCAR told me I was. The pod racing wasn't perfect, but it's NASCAR's failure to manage it that allowed it to get out of hand. Teams started perfecting the cooling and racng most of the race like that. Then they did the crazy 12 channel radio thing, and NASCAR did nothing. Once it's a mess, they ask the fans what they like better. Of course people say pack racing, because they no longer remember Kez's great double move in '09, or Harvicks sweet pass of McMurry in the 600. There's a bunch of other great finishes I could mention.

Now they go so far to kill pod racing, they make pack racing even messier. How dumb is the smaller spoiler? That's what caused most of the wrecks. There was so little grip, it didn't take much to wreck a guy. Then we have cars running very hot...at night. Bowyer said he was blowing water in the pack. What happens during the day?

IMO, last night was a mess, but it may be just the tip of the iceberg. We may find out Thursday. If it turns out NASCAR needs to change some things, I hope it happens then and not at the 500. It could end up that nobody gets what they want when everyone forms big gap lines to stay cool and stay in one piece, then race with 5 to go.

I guess I'm one of the uncountable number of idiots on forums everywhere that hated the tandem racing. I don't like wrecks, but the tandem racing just didn't seem right.

So be it. :D
ok,count me in.................

the cars,2day,were getting hot, NASCAR needs too make grill bigger n spoiler bigger, just ban pushing in corners.

The difference between Jeff's save and Kyle's was that Jeff was going really slow afterwards and Kyle was trying not to lose positions. Kudos to the M&M's crew for keeping the car competitive. Kudos to the driver for his will to win.

Well, he failed because he spun it to the infield after saving it. He pitted for 4 and restarted 8th or 9th.

I'll give you the "running too hot" part, Nascar went a little too far with that aspect of the changes. As for the spoiler I think it is right on. The biggest problem last night was bumping some one in the corner, either intentionally or not. I said this in a previous post on the subject, it has been pretty much a given that you don't bump draft in the corners. I see last nights results as more of going in there with not knowing what to expect and learning on the fly. Also being a non points race had a lot to do with the balls to the walls type racing.

I hope you're right. We may see Thursday what to expect on Sunday.
I hope I'm right too.;) Seriously though they did throw a lot of changes at these guys, so figuring out how these cars will handle in race conditions was a huge issue. If Nascar throws some more changes at them before the Duels or right before the 500 it will be the same thing all over again for the teams and drivers. Give the cars a little more in the cooling system, just one tweak, and I think the racing will be good for the 500. Keeping my fingers crossed anyway!:)

My 2¢. Better racing, IMHO, then what we've seen in the past several years. A car could break away, the pack could run down two or three cars "hooked" up. That's the good, now the bad.
Drivers need to learn where and how to "bump draft" again. Until they do lots of good cars are going to get torn up.
Maybe it's time for na$car to insitute a no touchy-touchy rule at plate races. You touch, cause a spin, you get parked. No points and no money.

They knew how to bump draft for MANY YEARS and have torn up countless cars in the past

True, but that was with the "old" car. The paint doesn't have time to dry before they come out with changes on this COT.

disclaimer, I know that most cars are wrapped and not painted today. I may be showing my age but you know exactly what I meant so don't get snippy, skippy. I ain't in the mood.

2009 is when the rule was put into effect. The COT started running full time in 2008.

No bumping brought about angered fans and drivers alike. It simply didn't work. Fans complained that the governing body had too much control. History has a way of repeating itself. I don't think this would be an exception.

I hope that was said in jest. They have done that before. Remember the most boring Taladega race in recent memory? Similar kind of thig, they kinda said "no bump drafting" and everyone just ran in a straight line all day, no passing, no side-by-side, nothing but yawns all around

That has been my biggest concern. They locked the teams into a 2 gallon cooling system, and that wont be easy to bump up. If it's a very warm day Sunday, opening the vent all the way and bosting the pressure may not be enough for 500 miles of pack racing. Long range forecast says 82 Thursday and 68 Sunday. Maybe NASCAR told the teams to bring their larger cooling systems just in case they need to switch. We can only hope it stays cool and works out.

Smaller spoiler, smaller cooling system, smaller vent and lower cooling system pressure, extended rear bumper, repositioned cooling vents, no driver to driver radio communication AND no communication between driver and another spotter. That sure is a big hammer NASCAR swung to end pod racing. I'll be amazed if they got it right last week.

I'll admit i liked the 2 car, but i forgot how awesome pack racing was :D. Even though kasey decided to wreck himself on lap 9 I enjoyed it props to the shrub for winning with a car that looked like it had left martinsville by the end of the night.

SST, this made me laff out loud!! Well Done!

I just got a chance to watch my DVR'd copy of the race and I have to admit that Kyle's saves last night were the best that I've ever witnessed. I still don't like him but I sure applaud his ability. And this is coming from what some on this board consider to be the worst of all fans imaginable, a diehard Earnhardt Jr. fan.

Funny, JR said "Kyle should go to the back of his car, and high-five his track bar"

Good stuff. I had heard that too. I figured it wasn't wort mentioning as it will surely turn this into a Jr. bashing thread. Wait..... Wait for it.....

I think Junior is becoming quite a sage in the garage area . His thoughts are right on the money and original .

Maybe someday one of the Nascar reporters will publish a book of Junior Quotes . Like the Yogi Berra stuff . Start writing them down.:D

We'll go together on that idea if you let me jump on board. Even if we only sell one book to a third of his fans, we've hit the lottery!

Ok ,the idea is yours to run with .I will look for it next year. Try to do it in soft cover to keep the price down and so some of the guys on this forum can use it in their outhouse .:D

I'm thinking about going the 'book on tape' route. I don't know how many Earnhardt fans can read.

If you do that, Ted wont be able to pick a picture for the cover.

That would make a great book though, wouldn't it ? A bunch of Kimmel's behind the scenes photo's and Yogi-isms from drivers . The forum members could contribute a lot of them . Like what we were talking about earlier (I dunno I had my eyes closed) or (He just changed his undershorts and went back out) or (I don't know what part broke ,but it must have been one of the important ones.)You guys probably have a hundred of them.

I would buy it if it also had all the classic quotes that come out of driver to driver conflict. For me, real driver personality used to be one of the biggest draws to stock car racing vs the champagne and cigar racing. NASCAR is low tech, messy and more of a free for all than most forms of racing, and that makes guys let down their guard and let it all hang out. Even the ass holes are entertaining. Listening to Kurt scream about monkeys humping footballs while sliding through a turn at 160 mph is as entertaining as hell.

Fox earned a 4.0 overnight Nielsen rating for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Budweiser Shootout on Saturday night, up 3% from last year’s race. The telecast was the top-rated program of the day and gave Fox a win in primetime among all networks.

Nice to see the trend is continuing from last year.

That is good news.
