Byron to the 24, Elliott back to using the 9.

No, it really isn't. DW only drove the 17 for a few years at HMS. He ran the 17 for many years as his own team. Tide went to the 5 when he left. The 5 was the first number for HMS, it had been around for over 30 years. The first HMS win, the first Daytona win, all Bodine's #5. The 5 won a title with Terry in '96. And the 25 was the second number at HMS, while not quite as accomplished as the 5 was still a big part of HMS history. I see no reason to continue the 88 when it was specifically changed for Dale.

I guess I'm just a sucker for history.
Heres some new history for you.

The 5/25 has 1 championship to the 24/48 having 11 championships.

IMO the 24 & 48 are far more significant than the 5 or 25.

NOPE. Screw marketing and screw revenue. I'll continue to rock my old Gordon 24 gear while I cheer for Elliott and the other HMS guys. I love Hendrick Motorsports as much as anyone but I'm not buying into this BS.
Hey at least some of our 24 Axalta hats we can still wear as I bet Axalta will sponsor the 24 again

We all know that yall can cry all you want about Chase not being in the #24 and "youre done" with him. But as soon as he rattles off wins in the #9 yall are gonna click to the nascar superstore.

Chase won a championship with the #9 and its his father's old popular number. He has more attachment to that number than the #24 ever will.

No argument here. I still don't like them dropping the 5, especially when they are choosing to still run the 88.

Who is saying they are "done" with him? Certainly not myself or any of the other Elliott fans. He could run #263 for all I care, he would still be my favorite. I like that he'll be in the 9, and I wish they would've put him in the 9 from the get go.

Numbers dont make the car go faster. #88 will do just fine in 2018. Itll look good on that thing they are calling a camaro.

100% certain that Chase will wheel off a bunch of wins in the 9. One less digit = Lighter car. Good move. :sarcasm:

Maybe just leave him alone. Cut the hype machine, and let him become the driver he is going to be.....and in the background, make your cars faster?

The NY Yankees or Alabama Crimson Tide could change their logo/uniforms, and it wouldn't make a lick of difference how they perform on the field, but guess what? They don't. Because their brand is historic. The 5 has always been part of the Hendrick brand.

Like I've said several times now, at the end of the day it's just a number. Obviously HMS doesn't seem to think it's a big deal. But as an HMS fan I wish they would keep the 5, especially when the 88 is completely insignificant IMO.

Rest assured, I won't lose any sleep over it.

I still wear Mark Martin #6 hats. I guess that means I'm supporting Trevor Bayne.
The difference being Mark drove the 6 a lot more than 2 years. Everyone knows who that 6 is representing.

I still wear Gordon stuff also, btw. I actually have a lot of 24 Axalta gear from Jeff's days. You telling me people won't look at that and think of Byron now?

I always associate Chase Elliott and #9 myself.

In the end it really isnt a huge deal because thinking back to the 3 drivers I've rooted for as long as I can remember they have driven the following numbers in no particular order: 94, 9, 19, 98, 91, 21, 50, 83, 4, 5, 25, 24. I'm sure I'm missing several from Bills semi-retirement period that I can't even remember.

I think this is a great thing for both drivers, now Chase can be Chase with his own number, and not Chase driving the #24 car that used be Jeff Gordon's car.

They did this to give Chase his own identity , because no matter what, as long as he drove a Cup car with the #24 on it, he would always be compared to Jeff and expected by many to be just as good or better than JG.

Thought they should have made Chase the 99 when he came up so going to the 9 works. Guess the 5 car is gone now, Byron in the 24 seems like more of s Jeff Gordon type than Elliott anyway.

My pickup truck has a Haley Moody #50 bumper sticker on it.

I guess I should've gotten mad and burned my truck to the ground when she drove a #41 car at Christmas last year.

People mad about their Chase Elliott merchandise having to be replaced because he's going from #24 back to the car number he's driven for almost the entirety of his racing career.
I'm sorry you don't find it to be a legitimate gripe? Your money wasn't spent on it sir.

Ehh maybe some are mad, idk. I couldn't care less about the merch. I just don't like change for the sake of change. Shoulda had Elliott in the 9 to begin with. And I'll miss the 5 being part of HMS. But I'm pretty sure I've made that clear by now lol

I have to agree with the sentiment that if Chase was going to drive the #9, he should have driven it from day one. Not a huge deal, but Rick, you kind of screwed the pooch on this one....... On the bright side, the very first race car I ever got to work on was a number 9!

#9 is his number. Always has been.

I've spent plenty of money on Kevin Harvick merchandise when he drove car no. 29 and Mark Martin merchandise when he ran no. 6. Also got a couple Wally Dallenbach diecasts with different numbers laying around.

Chase Elliott has multiple Snowball Derby wins in a #9. As well as wins in the All American and the Winchester 400.

I'm glad he's in the #9.

As a fan you do develop the attachment to the number or something about the look of the car... after all it's all you see 98% of a race day... so if fans are upset about a number change I get it and I've been there when I got behind and pulled for other drivers... with Carl I loved the #99 at roush, always thought that was a cool combo with a great wheelman... it shouldn't ever change anything but it did when he was in a whole different package each race... didint like the 19, didint like really any of the paint schemes... so I can relate.

Hell I got thrilled when roush rolled out the 99 at dega for Ryan reed for last season...

I can't speak for all 24 fans, but I know for me, it was special to be able to still sport that number on race day after Gordon and have it still be your favorite driver in the car. And not rooting for the number just for the number. Was always part of the conversation out in public or around the tracks. So I guess that's what sucks about it the most. I look around this board and see people every week that root for multiple drivers in multiple car numbers and don't have that attachment to one specific, that's where I think the difference lies and why some think it's petty. I root and have rooted for one guy, in one number, since I was 8.

I will say, if they allow him to run that dayglow yellow 9 to give it some added flare, I'd welcome the change a little more lol.

This is so freakin stupid. They made such a big deal about Chase taking over the legacy of the 24....and now they switch him to the 9? Ridiculous. Should've given him the 9 to begin with.

And Bowman has the 88....why? That number was made for Jr. They should have gone back to the 25.

I hate this all around. Now the original HMS 5 and 25 numbers are no longer used by HMS. Dumb dumb dumb.
Bowman to the #5 next year, 88 retired.

Happy to see chase in the 9, but this is the reason I don't buy merchandise anymore. Drivers changes sponsors way too often and in this case even numbers.

I understand that for sure. That's more along the lines I think now... I got tired of trying to look for the next guy I like all over the series get all into his sponsors team and number just to see it all be erased within a couple seasons... so after Carl was done, I'm more happy just looking at the overall race day and just watching the 2 car. I will now just say my favorite driver is in the hall of fame after retiring in 2005... I don't need to try and fill in anything anymore...

But to your point I agree with... the 2 car having a great talent like brad behind the wheel, that easily makes me fine cheering brad on.

I get what you're describing though is all I'm saying :D
