Byron to the 24, Elliott back to using the 9.

Austin running the #3 of any style means nothing, none would match the look of the Intimidater's Goodwrench Chevy and he will never live up to the legend. Even Junior was smart enough to stay away from that car.
Chase driving the #9 Coors is a bit different mainly because Bill is still here and I guess many of the family who worked on Bill's cars are still around also. It's a family thing.

Would Mr. H even welcome a beer sponsorship? It'd be badass to see Coors on the car, but I thought I read once that Rick was against having alcohol sponsors. Could be wrong.

Not sure it would make me want to drink Coors though lol, haven't quite found the taste for their stuff.

He is his own man, he's been running the 9 forever though and has made a pretty successful career out of it.

Eh.....just like Junior is his own man? Come on man.

I agree with you 100% on the 3. No, 1000%. I really like Chase, but the expectations are high largely due to his DNA. Let him develop his own identity the way Junior did later in his career.

A number does not make a difference, its what the driver does with it.

Junior is his own man, has had success in the 8 and 88, a championship winning team owner, and has brought in plenty of talented drivers through the ranks. I mean what does it take to be, "Your own man" just because someone has a last name does not mean a thing in the end. Its what the individual does in the end.

Rick openly talked about trying to bring Budweiser back on one of his cars in the late 2000's but a deal never happened

I agree. Then why do any of this?

It has everything to do with Hendrick and sales.

Why would they keep Bowman in the 88 and not go to the 25? Nationwide and Mountain Dew wants to see it.

Byron in the 24? Axalta and Liberty pulling strings.

Chase reverting to the 9? Marketing and it's his number he's always races with.

I think what I read was around the time Dale came over from DEI and Budweiser didn't come. I probably misinterpreted whatever it was I heard or read.

If we're talking marketing, I don't know that it gets any bigger than Chase being in the 24. That was like lightning in a bottle for HMS. I will say that I think switching to the 9 will have a greater impact than it would have if he had come in with the 9 from the start.

Mr. H wanted Bud to come with Jr, but couldn't find room since they had other sponsorship commitments in place and were 100% full (man, how times have changed). A few years later he said they were talking to Bud again when they signed Kahne but a deal never materialized for whatever reason.

Coors on the 9 car again would be amazing to see, plus I've always liked Coors myself so I would be extra pumped to see them sponsor my favorite driver

I believe it was Richard Petty that didn't want alcohol sponsors.

The fact that he is underachieving a bit makes Austin running the #3 a little more insulting, no? Never was a good move by RCR, imo. Should have been retired; it's just the classy, respectful thing to do... but the rampant nepotism is obvious. :)

Chase to the #9? That is ok. :)

Well I love my children and grand children so if I was in a position to do so I would be doing the same as Richard. But lets face it, Austin is doing OK in the 3 car and if we were not comparing him to DE I doubt there would be all that much negativity talk about him. We do have other kids in the Nascar series who may only be there because of the relationship with their fathers to certain teams. Three that I can think of and yet no negative talk about them.

Well, that is great, and perfectly understandable. You don't want to deny your loved ones what they love. :) I still think the 3 should have been retired out of respect, though. I do not think Austin is not the worst driver on the grid. I would not be surprised if he adds a few more Cup wins to his resume. I'd say he's probably a Ryan Newman/Kasey Kahne -tier driver. He's better than Ty, who might be among the worst. However, Richard Childress should not have ever brought out the 3 for either of them, regardless of their abilities. As for what I originally said, I still kinda think that the fact that he is not even running very well with it just makes it a bit insulting, really, but that's kinda besides the point, I guess. :) RC could - and should - have given those boys any number other than 3. It just seems classless to me. The situation with the 9 is different. Bill is still on God's green Earth, and I'm sure he gave his consent to HMS for them to use the 9. Of course, Chase has used it most of his career anyway in homage to his father. I respect this move more; it just seems more sensible. :) Kinda wish Chase had just used the 9 in Cup in the first place. ;)

I'm not disagreeing with you, BUT, it also does not hurt to remember that for Richard Childress, the 3 was HIS number long before he and Dale crossed paths. I think the desire to run that number goes a good bit deeper than just it's connection to Dale Earnhardt.

Yes Yes Yes, the kid has said many times he wanted to run his grandfathers number. Some fans just don't listen so they think he wants DE's number. I was always a DE fan and I have no problem with them using the #3. DE was a man... not a number.
