Byron to the 24, Elliott back to using the 9.

Its just a number.

Or is Chase completely changing teams?

I've bought so much 24 stuff the last 2 years...tons. ****!

Just didn't think I'd ever root for a car other than the 24. Not very thrilled about this.

New legacy. marketing. More sales. $$$$$$$
I mean 9 is my favorite number so I'm cool with it, and if Kasey gets the 95 that adds my 2 facorite numbers together so Ill get stuff either way.

Plus as a long time Jeff Gordon hater my #24 Chase shirt always felt wrong.

Will be really weird if Axalta sponsors the 24 and JG isn't driving it.. cool with Chase in th 9 it always should have been his number to begin with

They need to make replacement skins for hats, die cast cars, souvenirs, etc, even tattoo conversion kits, just like the cars get reskinned. Then the people can make the change immediately after the banquet from #24 to # 9, with no pain.
Then the world will be just, and Chase Elliott can have a clear conscience.

This is so freakin stupid. They made such a big deal about Chase taking over the legacy of the 24....and now they switch him to the 9? Ridiculous. Should've given him the 9 to begin with.

And Bowman has the 88....why? That number was made for Jr. They should have gone back to the 25.

I hate this all around. Now the original HMS 5 and 25 numbers are no longer used by HMS. Dumb dumb dumb.

Its just marketing & numbers bro. Never fall for the hype.

NOPE. Screw marketing and screw revenue. I'll continue to rock my old Gordon 24 gear while I cheer for Elliott and the other HMS guys. I love Hendrick Motorsports as much as anyone but I'm not buying into this BS.

Interesting. I like Chase getting the 9, don't care for the sacred 24 being passed around like the neighborhood bicycle. I'd rather see the 88 turn into the 9 or the 25 and leave the other ish alone but whatever.

The only swag I've bought since 15' was Blaney/Elliott gear other than one 42 koozy. Just throwing money away!

This quote from Rick sound familiar?

Putting Bryon in the No. 24, he said, was more of a “fit factor.”

“And that’s what I see with William and our organization,” Hendrick said. “He reminds me a lot of Jeff at that age with regard to being a special talent and having a great head on his shoulders.

It really is all BS. And it definitely sucks for somebody like me that buys a lot of merchandise.

I only have Gordon merch, I still root for the young guns :idunno:

I pull for certain drivers no matter what number, team, or manufacturer. YOMV. Chase taking over the 24 wasnt enough for me to like the kid. Several of his moves at Darlington, Richmond, aggressiveness on plate tracks & quick learning sold me.

Do you buy merch based on the number on the car? Youre gonna have a bad time if so.

Glad youre not a Kurt fan

****! I bought all that #24 merch for no reason! :sarcasm:

Man... the 5 was around for ages... I have a signed #5 diecast from two-time champion Terry Labonte. :) Then, last year, I met Kasey Kahne. :) Just hope the #48 doesn't get axed after JJ goes... or passed around a lot.

At the end of the day, it's just numbers. Not a big deal, it won't change or dictate who I root for. But as a lifelong HMS fan I would've preferred to see the 5 and 25 still on the track.

No but who wants to wear 24 Chase Elliott gear when somebody else will be in that #? Would be different if he had driven it for 10 years or so.

I liked Chase before he was slated to take over the 24, already being a fan of the 24 made it a win-win.

It will just be strange rooting for another number when my 2 favorite drivers have driven it my whole life and having so much stuff with that number on it.

Most merch these days has the sponsor and/or number more prominently displayed then the driver. Hats for example, I usually buy with the number on the front because sponsors change much more then numbers do (usually).

I can understand your point if you're rocking a shirt with a mural of Chase's face but I'd venture to guess his tenure at Hendrick will be a pretty long one, and his success will likely be linked to the 9 just like Logano's success is linked to the 22 not the 20.

Theres the problem. Its not a HMS or marketing strategy problem, its the break in status quo.

Everything changes.

The #17 Tide Ride with DW is also a HMS staple. :idunno: Its not like Stenhouse Jr is out there crappin on DW's good name.

No, it really isn't. DW only drove the 17 for a few years at HMS. He ran the 17 for many years as his own team. Tide went to the 5 when he left. The 5 was the first number for HMS, it had been around for over 30 years. The first HMS win, the first Daytona win, all Bodine's #5. The 5 won a title with Terry in '96. And the 25 was the second number at HMS, while not quite as accomplished as the 5 was still a big part of HMS history. I see no reason to continue the 88 when it was specifically changed for Dale.

I guess I'm just a sucker for history.

Fans gonna fan.
If Jeff wanted the 24 to stick with him he would have requested it be retired by Rick.

He understood that drivers make a legacy not the numbers. It's Jeff's legacy not the #24's legacy. Unless something tragic happens, I forsee the #24 living on for decades long after Gordon's career.

FWIW you can still buy brand new Jeff Gordon 24 merch...
