Cup RACE thread --- Las Vegas

Great day for Matty D and bringing it home 2nd!!!

Eh, after 5 or so of these mile and a halfs we’ll see which teams have speed all season.
We will see. But aside from Truex, those Toders did not look strong.

Feel for Blaney though. That blows.

Matty D looks genuinely excited. Good for him and the 21 fellas. He’s gonna win 2 races this year

How can you not like Matt? Dude’s humble af and races like every race is his final because nothing in his career has been guaranteed.

Joey should thank his former CC for having a brain cramp and bringing in the 12

Penske is doing fine -- Mike Joy with best seat in the house is losing track of time and space :D
Yes to both.

I was ruminating about the personnel changes with 10 to go. Roger had both cars battling for the lead and the other one was 3 spots back.

Worked out for Logano to be hard of hearing and a muscle spasm at the same time and jerk the wheel to the right

Kyle Busch didn't have a top 10 car today.

Toyota's may lag all year tbh. Could be Chase's year. He's gonna win 5-6 races. Jimmie is gonna win some. Expect atleast one HMS car in the final four.

What? Toyota literally won the Daytona 500 6 days ago and Truex had one of if not the fastest car today before his pit road problems

Ryan sounds crushed, annoyed, and frustrated. Feel bad for him, but he will be okay I think he’s gonna have a big year

Yup, strong stable and a professionally run outfit like Penske is making a strong statement today -- even with Woods Bros Guido.

I don't know if Penske could've made a bad decision in reorganizing two Champ drivers, two Champ crew chiefs, a winning driver in Blaney and the other guy. Hopefully Blaney can grab 2 to 3 wins this year and Kez can get over Roger hating him... :D

Matt Di Benedetto finishing second is good. Somewhere , maybe Paul Menard is smiling.

Man, what a missed opportunity. File this one under “that’s racin!” The guys that deserved to factor into the win didn’t end up where they deserved, and freak circumstances laid the good finishes in a few teams’ laps. By definition, “that’s racin!” I’m really bummed, but I try to look big picture and see that there was a lot of positive for my guy today. Congrats @SlicedBread22 and enjoy it!

Spinhouse ran really well today.
He didn't. The incident with JJ was because Stenhouse was leading during pit cycles. He then only got track position due to the timing of the Elliot spin. Was still a step below the HMS Chevy's.

9 was better. Daytona was a crap shoot. None of the other Toyota's ran top 10 today. We haven't seen that in years. It's early in the season but Toyota and JGR has NOT been THAT far off at a mile and a halfer in years

He did.

Once he got track position he was able to keep it. And finish ... 3rd.

True. But those were relatively short runs, weren't they? They must have worked on it in clean air, because he was dropping on those long 80 lap runs

Yep. I’m biased and admit as such, but random circumstances determined today’s outcome. The HMS teams, especially the 9, raised my eyebrow today. Very disappointed, but very, very pleasantly surprised at their performance.

edit to add that I’m selfish: I give two flips about HMS as a whole, I’m a Chase Elliott fan period.

Looked like the old HMS. Overall the 9, 48, 12, 19 and 22 were the 5 best cars today. 88 was about an 8th place most the day. But they found something there at the end. Absolute rocket.

But all that aside, this was the most JGR has struggled at a 1.5 mile race track in a while. Truex started up front and was race. But Hamlin, Bell and Jones were non factors. Kyle was okay, but when he got into the top 10, he dropped out. It may be too early to predict, in fact, it is. But we have not seen those cars struggle collectively like this at a cookie cutter track in a while.

Anyone catch Jimmie calling the car a Monte Carlo instead of a Camaro?

If not for the caution that was going to be a pretty exciting race. My hats off to Blaney for running up towards the front all day and to Bowman who was on the way to making this one exciting finish.

It’s still the sports biggest race lol. So Truex had the 2nd best car today and Toyota is done? I see what you’re saying but that’s way overstating it. Remember most of the Toyota’s started at the back of the pack

I don't think they are done. But I think they are going to be playing catch up all year. How many times have we seen them start in the back and slice through the field.

They are missing something right now. No doubt about it. Don't mean to be reactionary, as it is early in the season, but we haven't seen this in some time. They may not be the powerhouse they were the last few years. And if they are, they have work to do.

Yes, they were. Rather like some previous sets of similar circumstances that resulted in driver errors and crash damage to his and other cars.

In the present, Stenhouse is looking pretty smooth, his mullet notwithstanding.

You can thank buck tooth Ross for his usual overagressive driving and crash. Literally every single time a different driver is about to win there is a late yellow that ensures one of the usual suspects ends up winning. I feel sorry for people that don’t like Toyota, Logano, Brad, or Harvick.

I don’t feel sorry for Blaney or Bowman though anyone with a brainstem stays out with 2 to go. This is why the same guys always win
Wait, do you think it was Blaney who made the call to pit?

Just got back from the races. That was the best NASCAR race I have experienced in person. I have only seen races at California and Vegas, but great racing all day.

Just some observations from a casual fan.

- Two heartbreaks for me as Chase really had the car to beat today and I really thought Bowman was going to catch Blaney. That ending was so anti-climatic and not going to lie really bummed me out after a great day of racing overall.

- Aero package seems to be good at Vegas now. Lots of passing not only for the lead, but many battles throughout the field. The restarts are absolutely thrilling to watch.

- Seeing the races live is so much better than on tv. Absolutely cannot beat the sound of these cars in person. TV does it no justice.

- The xfinity series is no bueno. The racing is terrible and there are maybe 3 cars that are worth a crap it seems. After watching the cup race and hanging around to watch the xfinity race, the Cup racing is infinitely better.

Overall, it was a great day and can’t wait for September to roll around.
