Cup RACE thread --- Phoenix

I think this is yours C Bell.

Impressed with the finish of the #21. I only got to watch the last handful of laps, was it a legit finish or a situational thing at the end?

With how this system rewards wins with playoff points, if you can win 8+ races and miss the final four then you choked it away.
So wrecked in the restrictor plate race in the playoffs or used up on a road race after all of the points are reset for the playoffs don't count?

Winning that many races gives you enough playoff points that you could do both of those things and still be fine.

Aside from the winner take all final four, this system does well at recognizing regular season success.

Considering that for the last 2 years the teams with the best record didn't win the jackpot race I beg to differ. Same thing happened in Xfinity last year. Trucks the last 2 years in a row. Some of us pay attention to those things, some go for the hype.

I mean I won't because the entire idea of winning that many straight races is asinine and is creating a ludicrous hypothetical.
I figured people would know that was a gross exaggeration, but a half dozen wins and still lose the championship because of a fluke the last race is entirely feasible.

Seriously… who will stop him???
Come on - It's early and it's not like these wins have been dominant. We saw the 24 off to a similar start last season winning 3 races pretty quick I think and then faded. He had the best car yesterday but what else is new? It was slightly better I thought but same old Phoenix. I really think racing has gotten much better at almost every track outside of Loudon and Phoenix.

HMS needs to find more speed, long run speed to have any shot this year at the 20
Yeah - Surprised Larson got third but I think that he benefited from when the caution came out because right before the pit cycle he had faded outside of the top 10. IDK - Same old Phoenix for HMS so I feel like last season all over again - even if one of them make them final 4 do they really have any chance? These flat one-mile tracks like Phoenix and Loudon just have guys in a box and it seems like there is little a driver can do if the car is not there. Chase complained about lateral grip all day saying he had "nothing to lean on." Of course I also thought it was the old AG in keeping him on the race winning strategy when he did not have the car or track position which did not help. Maybe if HMS gets all 4 cars in the final 4. LOL.

Anyone hear Denny's radio after the race? He was pissed he lost which I like but then it sounded like he said something about Bell being a "---- little s---." I could not make out the first word but man does that suck. I have defended Denny a lot and passion is one thing but I can't believe he would say something like that on the radio.

Id believe Denny say anything. Putting his foot in his mouth with dumb statements is kind of his whole deal. It's just lately a bunch of people have fallen for it and think he actually says things worth listening too which he doesn't.

I'm okay with what Denny said. We've heard similar stuff between Chasey and Larsony haven't we? ....but that's the Chain Gang.....so, it's just the "culture?"

Seriously? Yes, they have a chance. Before Bell's win last spring, MY Toyotas had led a grand total of 15 laps in the Next Gen at that place. Go to work.

In retrospect, I wasn't and still not sold on the idea of the two different tire story that they ran at Phoenix. It might have brought more eyes to the race, maybe silenced some of the Phoenix haters.
Pretty sure Goodyear had already tested that tire to death or ones similar to that and they knew how the tire was going to work. Goodyear got a lot of air time with the change and TV had something to sell to the fans with the story.
I think an even softer tire would have worked better for tire management. Teams were able to drive it like they stole it for at least 60 laps with little if any fall off. It was a baby step in the right direction and better than nothing but too little IMO. They had maybe one actual tire failure besides the brake shoes exploding?

We have heard similar from those 2 when Chase got used up. That was just good racing with Denny and Bell yesterday. I like that Denny is pissed that he got beat because once you are OK with it, it's time to retire. That said he did not have to make is personal.

I am surprised to hear that stat but I don't think that it really tells the whole tale. I do agree though that they need to go to work and figure it out but at the same time I just can't see major improvement happening during the season. Chase did say they made his car better yesterday at one point but it seemed liked once the tires wore in they were just junk and this is too much of a track position race.

When you have Kyle Larson on your team, literally everything is possible.

I hear you, and I agree about retirement. Having said that, he was in the moment, and in my opinion, it's the reaction in the moment that speaks to me rather than the post race PC stuff. I am glad that we are past the la la land clean racing narrative of last week....that was not real nor realistic. Mark Martin and Martin Truex Jr. with their one championship between them is evidence of what a "clean racing" initiative will get you. I was happy to see Bell do him dirty. I believe that Christopher is ready to be Champion now.

I also believe that it is significant to note that I believe the red tires will be the tire for the Championship. Bell was pretty ordinary on those.....Adam and the 20 bunch will go to work, but the fall will be very different as it always is.
