Daytona RACE thread

I will say, not that he doesn't anyway, but if he ever wins a race now after another crash like that, which he easily could this year, he definitely deserves to be a Nascar Cup driver. No question.

Not saying he does or doesn't deserve to be a cup driver, but how does being in a few extreme wrecks make you any more or less deserving of being a cup driver? In my opinion it has nothing to do with it.

Plate racing isn’t the problem, all blame goes to the drivers for being overly aggressive. There’s plenty of evidence that plate tracks can produce solid, memorable races.

I think it sort of is though. Plate racing isn't what it was. These cars are in tighter packs than ever and theres zero separation, and moves can only be made with pushes and recieving pushes. Additionally, good luck switching lanes.

Some of the more memorable plate races occur when 3 wide racing felt possible, but not constant. Handling mattered, separation happened and cars could make single run passes.

I know it’s Daytona and a new car, but sometimes I wonder if he just lost interest I his last couple years in cup because of his desire to try other disciplines etc.

He said his give a **** meter wore out.

Jimmie is out there to have fun. His competitive fire burned out. His attitude makes him seem like an entirely different person from when he was winning.

Andy's anecdotal evidence, as always, comes from social media posts with zero context.

My anecdotal evidence comes from someone who was actually there.

But but but OuTrAgE
Wait, I was wondering who this "Honey" guy was with so many posts and I didn't recall seeing that name over the years.
Now I think I understand...

Well, I can’t remember who right now, I want to say either Junior Johnson or one of the Allison’s, but there a great who once said something along the lines of “everyone thinks they’re fast until they hit the wall a couple of times, then you find out what they’re made of”, regarding rookies.

Ricky is an easy target. But 85% of these guys drive like complete assholes now. It’s been this way for two generations of race car now. The blocking, smash drafting, bad judgement leading to fireball crashes at the end of every plate race.

The days of guys like Dale Jr, Jeff Gordon, JJ, Stewart, Kurt Busch who could run up front and control these races with actual race craft are gone.

The two best plate racers of this current gen are Joey Logano and Brad K. Who have caused or been involved in the majority of the wrecks for like 8 years now. Aggression to the point of chaos.

This is just what Daytona and Talladega are now.

NASCAR needs to start penalizing some of this crap. Plate racing is legitimate racing but these yee haw antics are ruining it.

OK. I guess I am breaking a "rule" to still be posting stuff here this many days after the race but I am irritated enough right now that I decided to. This opinion will be unpopular and I am fine with that but I am tired of all the crap I see about how people are calling for changes because of Preece's wreck including Preece himself. This is RACING people and there will always be danger. The amazing thing is that Preece has had multiple wrecks like that and not been hurt and that is a testament to just how safe these cars are but there will always be danger and risk. It's totally understandable it people cannot accept that and those people can choose not to race or not support racing the same way some don't support professional fighting.

All this said - I do agree we need changes but we need changes to make the racing better. The Daytona 500 should not be a 475 mile parade followed by 25 miles of crashes and cautions. If changes are to be made then they need to do something to help spread the cars out more and put the "racing" back into it. This would likely alleviate a lot of the safety concerns too but if you are THAT concerned about safety then STAY HOME. I am reminded of Nicole Kidman in Days of Thunder - "Well that obviously a dangerous way to spend your time." Or the Dale Earnhardt quote about not letting those ants get your candy ass. I know ironically Dale later died in a crash but I am sure if he was asked about that risk prior he would have said that it comes with the territory.

Damned autocorrect. Makes me look as actually stupid as I really am. 🤣
LOL. I was gonna point it out but I got the idea. Seriously though, Cope is not the only one. Trevor Bayne also comes to mind. I think Byron is an accomplished and deserving driver but we all questioned last season if we wanted a season like Logano's to be representative of a title. Now it's also a fair question as to if we want the Daytona 500 winner to be the guy that is in the right place at the right time each year. The big names that never won this race or took YEARS to such as Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace, Darrell Waltrip and Kyle Busch to name a few show this race has little to do with skill and mostly to do with luck and in today's package that is magnified even more than it used to be.

“ JGR was found to be in violation of Section 14.1 of the Rule Book, which pertains to overall assembled vehicles rules, and 14.5.8, which deals with the spoiler. Specifically, the spoiler base was found to be modified on the No. 19 car. The spoiler base is a single-source part and cannot be modified.

Briscoe was docked 100 driver points and 10 playoff points. JGR was fined $100,000 and deducted 100 owner points, as well as 10 playoff points. Crew chief James Small was suspended for four races.

Joe Gibbs Racing released a statement Wednesday evening, indicating that the organization plans to appeal the penalty. The statement also included an explanation, saying: “The issue in question was caused in the assembly process when bolts used to attach the spoiler base to the deck lid caused the pre-drilled holes to wear due to supplied part interferences.”

Gibberish …

Years ago, Evernham got caught with hardware that allowed high pressure air under the deck lid to bleed off through holes they drilled in the attachment bolts.

Some bolt hole “wear” could achieve the same result.

You'd think they'd have a little more confidence in the guy than to have to do that in his very first race. :XXROFL: :XXROFL::whoopee:

Where’s Rev, I thought he’d be on here defending Preacher Joe’s Cheating Yoyotas….maybe real life commitments are keeping our resident Toyota fanatic from logging on.

It just amazes me how whenever these "accidents" happen it's always something that will make the car faster lol!
HAHAHA! These crew chiefs are like my kids. They only tend to "forget" things they don't want to do and have no trouble with stuff they do want to do.

See Pocono. I don't defend this **** anymore than I defend Hendrick not being able figure out how to get louvers to fit correctly. Just thankful that I don't have a Jeffy in MY organization attacking the critics.

It's interesting that Hamlin's car was so fast also. Make ya wonder how long they have been doing the loose spoiler trick?
...and so was Bell, but Briscoe was another zip code. Honestly, I think this was a Briscoe thing.....just looking at the times....but who knows....and you can be rest assured that the rest of those doing it will rethink it by Dega--probably too late for this week.

Thankful that Ty was on the up and up given how slow he was all week.....I mean, given your logic and everything.....and those Fords are all legal right? ....and The Felon has been reformed and rewarded with his win because he was slow as ****, but so legal, right?

The first time the Cup rice burners showed up at Daytona they were caught cheating using rocket fuel to be fast enough to qualify....25 years later the first yota to sit on the pole for Daytona caught cheating. Revman, go sit down, this goes down in the history books, there isn't a story you can invent to get around this one. All of the look over here's, everybody cheats isn't going to cover up the Yotas 25 year anniversary of Daytona. Lol.

"If they ain't cheating, they ain't trying". I guess?

You just move on at this point. Briscoe needs a win to get into the playoffs. It is what it is.
Not necessarily. Remember Chase was close to pointing his way if after missing 7 races in 2023 and would have if not for a few DNF's at the end of the regular season. I remember a cut tire at Michigan really killing that.

When you post without reading my take, you are dancing on the borderline of idiocy. I didn't support the rocket fuel, didn't support Pocono, didn't support this....nor do I support whatever it was that The Felon was doing with his louvers. Find me a post where I did, and then take your crap elsewhere.

Borderline idiocy lol. Excerpts below. Sit down Revman. Lol.

This is what I dislike about the win and you're in format. Why wouldn't you cheat until you win? If you get away with it and get a win you're in the playoffs. If you get caught you don't lose anything because you're not in yet

To their credit Nascar has taken away most avenues of cheating from the teams. They sealed the bottom of the car. That took away tons of scheming on how to streamline everything under the car. They scan the topsides for any changes. More often than not they take cars back and take them apart for inspection and the instances of cheating are pretty far apart, That's how they caught this one.

Is it? Or is it just that they don't catch them very often? You have to remember even when they take the car to the R&D center they're not checking everything, they just check certain areas of the car.

The R&D tear downs I have watched, they tear down the whole car. They used to stream tear downs. They don't tear down the car at the track, they check certain things.

Defending US where. Nowhere. Loving the space in your head. Very cheap.
