Daytona RACE thread

Maybe people attending the race should be more prepared and arrive early, ESPECIALLY when there are extenuating circumstances. My goal when I go to a NASCAR race, or other major sporting events, is to be inside the venue within a half hour of the gates opening. When the Brickyard used have the gates open at 6 AM, we were usually parked and walking around by the garage area by 6:45. I have little sympathy for people that think they can show up for the Daytona 500 a couple of hours before the race just waltz right in.

Some of these people said they waited for several hours. They also opened the gates four hours before the race, which is their norm, so they didn't give fans a bigger window despite the circumstances of having more security than ever before. NASCAR dropped the ball there. Should've opened the gates at 7am so there's a bigger window.

Trump is notoriously hard to protect because he does what he wants, even if the Secret Service says not to. Plus, he has his own private security that clashes with Secret Service and local/state law enforcement as well.

Hard to understand what "enhanced" security for the "extenuating circumstances" at the 500 amounted to.

At any major league baseball game that I've been to in the last 10 years or so you must empty your pockets and walk through a metal detector.

Isn't that common practice at NASCAR events or were folks being made to bend over and crack a smile.

Road closures around the track.

Road closures around the track.

Guess that would slow up things a bit.

Wonder if they had signs like this posted . . .

Elliott is a champion who earned his win.

I'm no Elliott fan but I'd prefer a bonfide champion who got it done when it matters with his 1 win in 2 years to a driver who's greatest strength is tricking fans like yourself into not recognizing that he has telepathic super powers with the ability to manipulate your brains into thinking he isn't lucky.

It's too bad he choses not to use his psychic powers to make his wins more convincing
It's only lucky if you put yourself in position to take advantage of it. Nobody notices (or cares) about lucky when you're running 25th.

I know Stenhouse has a reputation, but that wreck was 100% Joey Logano's fault.
The thing is, you EXPECT dumb moves from Ricky, it's who he is, and he KNOWS winning one of these is probably the ONLY way he makes the playoffs. Joey? I feel like I should expect more from a three time champ, but honestly, I don't. Regardless how you want to assign blame, it was Joey ONCE AGAIN trying to make something out of nothing. The phrase "discretion is the better part of valor" is completely lost on him, but he gets away with it enough that he will never change.

I would agree that four hours is too short of a window, but once again, if you KNOW that, it's on YOU to get in line early. Like many here probably can relate to, if I had a dollar for every time I slept in a car waiting to get into a track, I'd have some real cash. When I was crewing, I beat our race car to the track most weeks.

Switch it around the other way. Would Joey have done the same thing to Stenhouse if it was reversed? Hell yes he would in a heartbeat. Two peas in a pod.
Ricky is an easy target. But 85% of these guys drive like complete assholes now. It’s been this way for two generations of race car now. The blocking, smash drafting, bad judgement leading to fireball crashes at the end of every plate race.

The days of guys like Dale Jr, Jeff Gordon, JJ, Stewart, Kurt Busch who could run up front and control these races with actual race craft are gone.

The two best plate racers of this current gen are Joey Logano and Brad K. Who have caused or been involved in the majority of the wrecks for like 8 years now. Aggression to the point of chaos.

This is just what Daytona and Talladega are now.

Trying to figure out that "G/L" column and what Blaney did to be -14?
I just post them and shake my head. I think they just throw darts to see who gets the most points in a given race. Never have I seen an explanation as to what G/L signifies.

At some of the gates 3 hours before the race there was no line to get in. A 7:00 am opening would NOT have made any difference. Do you realize what it would take DIS (NASCAR did not drop the ball, they don't control the gates) to open the gates even 30 minutes earlier? For a number of years I worked the 500 in various capacities. Its a logistical nightmare to handle any change to a schedule as large as the Daytona 500.

One would expect…but he’s demonstrated time and time again that’s not his M. O.

Post wreck interview, his words and overall demeanor, told the story.

Wrecky threw a late and suspect block, like logano ( and pretty much all of them ) has numerous times, Joey got pissed and decided he was just going to drive right through him.

He almost took out both blaney and Cindric, had he done that and got away unscathed, ultimately winning the race…I would have DM’d Newman.

If I know they have four hours to get 150,000 people through the gates, and you have to go through extra security, I'm standing in line at 6 or 7 AM.

There are no excuses here. The window wasn't large enough to get everyone in. Good for you for being the first person at the racetrack or something. There still wasn't enough time.

Plate racing isn’t the problem, all blame goes to the drivers for being overly aggressive. There’s plenty of evidence that plate tracks can produce solid, memorable races.

I guess you think Daytona personnel should have corralled the fans in the midway and herded them over to the gates and forced them through earlier. You are making no sense. The fans choose to not go to the gates earlier even though they were open. Yes, there was plenty of time to get the fans in, but the FANS choose to wait until it was closer to the start of the race. I heard that at 11:00 am it was a WHOLE 20 minute wait.

One of my buddies was there, and didn't try to get in until 11:45ish, and still got in long before green

Andy's anecdotal evidence, as always, comes from social media posts with zero context.

My anecdotal evidence comes from someone who was actually there.

But but but OuTrAgE

Trying to figure out that "G/L" column and what Blaney did to be -14?

It refers to the number of positions in the standings Gained or Lost since the last race.

Have no clue what the number refers to after the first race of the season. :idunno:

How memorable would they be without all the aggressive driving? Once thy go three wide, there isn't much happening.

Stands were full at start of race, rewatch the replay of it. More made up BS!
I noticed really big gaps in the main grandstand a few minutes before the initial start. Maybe those people were on site, but they weren't in their seats yet. This was the camera pointing from the roof down towards the start/finish line.

I have always found it interesting that likely the same people who would camp out on a sidewalk to buy concert tickets or stand in the freezing cold for hours on Thanksgiving night to save $100 on a laptop at Best Buy, bitch about having to get to ACTUAL events early to use expensive tickets they have already purchased.

Those people have to do those things in order to keep from not getting what they're after.

On the other hand . . .

"I've got a ticket !!! Let me in !!!"

It’s because the safety has increased significantly. You couldn’t be a complete knucklehead because at these tracks there was a risk of fatality or being maimed. Preece’s wreck pre-barrier or HANS could have been very bad

I will say, not that he doesn't anyway, but if he ever wins a race now after another crash like that, which he easily could this year, he definitely deserves to be a Nascar Cup driver. No question.

Typical plate finish…really happy for Jimmie though, especially in the Shaq/Magic scheme.
I know it’s Daytona and a new car, but sometimes I wonder if he just lost interest I his last couple years in cup because of his desire to try other disciplines etc.

William Byron is the luckiest driver in the history of this sport.

There's no one close. No one. Three straight years of wins falling into his lap.

Byron is the GOAT of luck. No one comes close.

Briscoe wrecks his teammate and gives it to Byron.

I wonder if someday Byron will have more than 20% of race wins that aren't involving luck
Eventually it’s not luck (tonight mostly was). He’s the best there is at putting himself in position to capitalize on it.

I'm assuming he means Cleetus McFarland, but I didn't care enough to ask for clarity
Correct.

It doesn't matter how talented you are when you're racing in an event where "being in the right place to win" can just as easily be 34th and a lap down when these wrecks happen. William Byron is immensely talented, but I say that not because of his Daytona 500 wins but his performances elsewhere both in NASCAR and in late models. I listen to the drivers on this one.
