Even though it could've hurt someone..

But if he would've laid off him, NASCAR would black flag him.

The plate packages have got to be modified. They're gonna kill someone if they keep this up.

Come on Andy! When was the last time a driver died during a plate race? It was over eight years ago. The COT is the safest car that NASCAR has ever run. Give the R+D a little time to catch up and plate racing will be great.

Drivers get out of the car and start saying things they really don't want to say.

Don't think they need a smaller plate, like Ryan Newman said they need to do something about them getting airborn. Carl was still somewhat in the air when he hit Ryan on the hood that's when he flew into the fence. If he had been on the ground the fans most likely would not have been injured.

That's the bottom line, really. While a couple of the other wrecks were a result of plate racing, the wild wreck at the start/finish line wasn't. It was just a result of two cars racing all out for the win. If someone could devise a
way to keep cars from going airborne when they start going backwards at high speed....

But this has been a problem at the really fast superspeedways since looong before they put plates on 'em, and looong before the COT. Roof flaps have been tried, and maybe a couple other small things, but they've yet to figure that problem out.

Sure, people say take horsepower away, but what good will that do, really? You may end up with less cars together, but an incident like the Edwards flip is still all to likely.

Other than leaving these two tracks, what can they do? Slow them down so much that there's no possibilty of getting airborne? That's no good, I mean half the excitement of racing is the speed.

Nationwide runs COT? Trucks run COT? ARCA runs COT? They have SAFER barriers on the straightaways?

You're right, everything's fine. There's no need to worry about cars flying in to stands or someone getting t-boned at 190 mph. :)

Did you see what happened to Patrick Sheltra at Daytona?

Bingo.

Anyone remember Clair Zimmerman's wreck in the 2005 ARCA Daytona 200?

sorry andy, i'm not agreeing. Regardless of what you want to say, I don't think Edwards nor McDowell would be alive right now (or at least, have walked away like they did) if it weren't for COT + SAFER barriers. Can't exactly say that for..

Dale Earnhardt Sr.
Steve Park
Patrick Sheltra
Adam Petty

you forgot about newman

Carl was over 2 feet in the air, already going backwards, before the flaps opened. The right side window and air rail obviously didn't work as designed (to generate downforce). The hood flaps obviously didn't do their job as designed (reduce air pressure under he car)

What else am i missing?

Good Lord Andy, didn't you know that auto racing is dangerous? I've been a fan of racing close to three times as long as you've been alive and the number of drivers killed these days is way fewer than they were even on the year you were born. Drivers will be killed for one reason or another, but there will be more deaths and you can count on it. Might not be one for some time, but it'll happen sooner or later. When it does occur, there will be those like you who will say "I told you so". When fatal accidents happen, most usually, there is an investigation as to what caused the accident and what can be done to prevent the same thing from happening again in the future.

It's really easy to be a Monday morning quarterback.

Jim Hunter said:
NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter said the sanctioning body will analyze the accident, as well as the safety fence, to determine if anything can be improved.

“If there were something that we felt we could do today to make it safer, it would be done,” Hunter said. “This is a fast race track. It’s wide. I saw guys racing five-abreast today, which I have never seen. We know the cars are safer than they’ve ever been.”

Bonehead candidates:

David Ragan for dumping his teammate in the Nationwide race

Denny Hamlin for causing the "Big One II"

Carl Edwards for letting the 09 get on the inside of him and getting sent airborne

Found Junior's words from press conference

Earnhardt Jr., a five-time Talladega winner and seven-time winner of restrictor-plate races, finished second but echoed concerns about the racing style. Drivers dread it because so much is out of their control, but Earnhardt said it’s loved by fans because of the danger.

“For years, we’ve had wrecks like this every time we’ve come to Talladega. Ever since the plate got here. And for years it was celebrated,” he said. “The media celebrated it, the networks celebrated it, calling it ’The Big One,’ just trying to attract attention.

“So there’s a responsibility with the media and the networks and the sanctioning body itself to come to their senses a little bit.”

As I was saying, Talladega doesn't have a SAFER barrier all the way around the track. In fact, only track that does is Flemington. And the Nationwide Series doesn't run COT.

Steve Park is still living, by the way.

Yes he is, but he, Jerry Nadeau and Jeff Pevris are all guys that had career ending, life changing accidents that all sure wish they had these COT'S and other saftey improvements that have been made the past few years. Chances are excellent they would still be racing and Tony Roper, Blaise Alexander could still be alive had they had the benefit of this added saftey features,

Blaise wrecked where there still are no SAFER barriers. Eric Martin was t-boned at the same track a year later by Deborah Renshaw - the accident was fatal. ARCA mandated spotters as a result of those crashes.

NASCAR mandates spotters and some form of head and neck restraint device at even it's All American Series level. All these are great innovations, but one of these days, we aren't going to be so lucky.

The commentators stated they had to or run him over. The rule states you can give the position back and not be pentalized. The key in this instance is the make of cars in question.....Toyota. Last year when a Chevy was forced below the yellow line at the finish line to pass, you guessed it, a Toyota, there was a black flag....and he was forced below the line. All it amounts to is NASCAR bending over and spreading them for Toyota.

Toyota fans can say whatever you want, but it is true. $$$ rule, and that's where most of it is coming from these days. Period.

I don't think there was even a toyota in the top 5 ??

okay so ambrose and speed in 4th and 5th respectively...still didn't play a part in the finish...

Andy, im a driver, your a fan and your more worried more about my saftey then i am. I've had a nasty roll ended up in the ICU for a few days but i got back in the car. Ive been beat, bruised, and hurt. Its part of racing.

*Kirkey seat - Basic
with Head supports and sholder supports i added
*G-Force sprint car window new (drivers side)
*Simpson Gloves (I have differnt brands, but Simpson are my main ones right now)
*RCI helmet - Just ordered an Bell forced air
*Sometype of neck brace
*my one peice suilt is pretty much a drag suit. I have a one layer 2 peice i wear when it is hot sometime
*Rollcage is out of a CJ Rayburn Racecar
*Belts - G-Force but i just ordered some Impact
*Quick release sterring wheel, with pad in the center.
*Okley racing shoes
*fire bottle

Of all the cars in my class i have the safest one. I am not scared when i pull on to the track. But no matter what kind of safty you put in a racecar someone is still going to be hurt or killed. Earnhardt died because of the cars were to ridged and the seat belts were not mounted right. But seat belt bolt can shear off, come loose. and CRASH. anything can happan. So you can put this and that is there and in the end it wont matter. They will be few and far between but will still happan.

they'll just close up the holes a little more on the plate and slow em down to about 180-185 instead of 200+ down the back superstrech

Yeh what good will that do, sap them of more horepower and they will be just as close together or closer....result same problem only amplified.

WoW! Bet Newman throws that pair of skivveys away!

Johnson said it sux racing here, Edwards said we'll keep doing it until someone gets killed. Someone did get killed in a plate race and NA$CAR had this knee jerk reaction with the COT.

Take off the wing/splitter, run crate motors bought at the track, issued the same as the plate is.

Did someone in the stands did get hurt?

Get rid of the plates....I've been saying this for years, if they want to continure racing at Dega and Daytona, these cars need to pass and seperate themselves. All this close pack racing is a fabrication of Nascar to make it seem exciting when in essence all it is doing is creating DANGER. A smaller displacement engine, smaller carb, to keep the cars around the 185-190 range, but also aloow them to pass and PULL AWAY, would eliminate the 3 and 4 wide mess that Nascar calls racing. This should have been done 15 years ago, but of course Nascar did not because the "excitement of plate racigng" is what brings in all those newbie viewers and keeps them watching. About time Nscar faced reality here, yesterday was a clear message that a change is needed before the next Daytona race!

Bonehead move of the race was Brad going into Carl. It could of been avoided. Even if Brad was able to get around Carl without contact, he would of had to dip below the yellow line which is illegal so no reason for the contact.

Jim Hunter:
"This place is wide enough to race on. You saw that [Sunday]. And yes, you saw a lot of accidents. Most of 'em were caused not by car failure, not by parts and pieces failure, but by overaggressive drivers or a driver making just one little slip. That's one of the things here. They run so close together that one little slip can cause a chain reaction, as we saw [Sunday]."

Looks like NA$CAR is placing the blame on the drivers,,,,:sarcasm:

Finishing order had nothing to do with the oroginal post. The original post stated that 2 cars passed below the yellow line, yet there were no penalties. Those 2 cars happened to be toyotas passing Brad Keselowski. The commentators said they had no choice, other than run him over. I honestly thought Talladega had 3, 4 or even 5 racing grooves.

Read more, post less.

Ask Carl what happened. He said he thought he had BK cleared so he came down. BK held his line, he did nothing wrong, unlike the other Roush driver Saturday.

Absolutely right. Brad did not turn his wheel right, Carl turned his left.

Darby told them in the rookies meeting to "hold their line" if this situation presented.

Carl was being his usual class act on that post race interview. I dont think Carl realized how close to the yellow line was to Brad.

Move below the yellow line to avoid wrecking a guy - black flag, DQ

Wreck a guy in the same scenario injuring 8 fans and sending a car flying = win the race.

Okay. I completely understand NASCAR's logic here :sarcasm:

We're gonna kill someone at Daytona or Talladega if we keep this up.

If Edwards hadn't made that move back to the bottom he would have been the race winner. I don't think Kesolowski would have beat him to the finish line.

So I guess we can dismiss all of this nonsense about how the COT cars stay on the track and how the restrictor plate stops airborne incidents. Let's get a few things straight,f or those of you that never have competitively drove a race car. First, the good:

Nascar has done wonders to improve safety at these races. The Safer barrier (which whould be extended to every part of the track), Hans device, and other safety moves have worked very well. They probably have saved many from injury.

Do not thing that the COT has anything to do with that, because it does not. These same safety devices would be found in any car that they ran in the Sprint Cup circut today. The restrictor plate obviously did not do it's job yesterday. Just ask Carl Edwards, as he went for a little airborn trip. If Nascar cannot find a way to keep these cars on the ground, then you reduce the size of the engine and do other things to reduce the horsepower and speed, but you do not use restrictor plates. All restrictor plates do is guarantee a bunched field and a greater chance for injury if and when the big wreck happens. If you think the cars are too fast, then take actions in the engine department to slow them down. Restrictor plates on a track the size of Daytona and Talladega equalize every car on the track. That is very dangerous. It is dangerous enough that many of these cars can hook up in a draft, but to insure that all of them can, is asking for major trouble, and that is what restrictor plates do.

As far as the bonehead move, I give that to Nascar for their entire handling of the race, and the season so far. I agree with those who say that the yellow line rule and enforcement is basically a joke. Could that have caused Edwards little flight yesterday? Now everyone isscreaming that Talladega has to be made into a safer track. Let's see how Nascar handles this.

The second pic, the left rear wheel of the 99 going over the hood and into the windshield of the 39 is freakin' down right scary.
