Doubleheader Races?

What's your opinion on doubleheader races in NASCAR (Cup in particular)? Maybe this was talked about in one of the threads?

Perhaps keep the schedule at 36 races.

Don't know of good tracks that would fit the mold, but maybe a doubleheader weekend at Richmond as the final two races before the Chase. I think a Friday and Saturday Night weekend at Richmond would be a good sell.
 
AND using my 52 week schedule that means we can have 104 races

No. Move dates around so it's still a 36 race schedule. It would be a good weekend ticket sell. Move the spring Cup race to Friday Night in September. The Xfinity Fall race can be part of perhaps a spring Saturday doubleheader on its own?

I would much rather go to a track and see two Cup races in a weekend or two races in a day like they do at Atlanta.

^ Don't see how that many races are possible. Putting a premium on those 5 races points wise might be a decent idea but I would have to give it further consideration.
As for now, I'll take it as a wild rumor.

Seems like taking twelve weekends and dividing them up into two races a piece. Like a couple of 200-milers at Kansas one weekend, a couple of 200-milers at Michigan, two 150-milers at New Hampshire another weekend, etc.
 
and now it got deleted from reddit. No idea why but that's fishy to say the least. I really don't want to jinx it but does this mean they are scrapping the chase and going to a full-season points championship? Otherwise why make the ford 400 double points?

That may be interesting. Does the Chase get scrapped? Let's run with this idea.
What 12 races would you split into two and how do you determine qualifying for the second race. Two separate qualifying races/days?

My 12 races to split:

Atlanta
Fontana
Texas 1
Kansas 1
Dover 1
Michigan 1
Daytona 2
Kentucky
Pocono 2
Chicago
Charlotte 2
Talladega 2
 
^ Considering the "wreck factor", perhaps changing out the superspeedway races for one of the New Hampshire races and another race (Las Vegas) would fulfill the requirement.

One from each of the tracks with two dates of course minus one. Phoenix, Kansas, Texas, Michigan, Pocono, Dover, Loudon, Charlotte, Daytona, Dega, Richmond, Martinsville, Bristol. Pick one to keep as two full races and there you go.

This makes sense the more I think about it because with twelve twin weekends I'd have to figure some would be during what's currently the Chase stretch. Since they'd both count as points-paying races the current win-and-in structure would probably have to be tweaked or scrapped. Do they want, say, five people advancing to the next round off of a win? And they couldn't have more than one twin weekend in the round of eight.
 
Hope it's legit. As much as I would love to see the g0d d@mn Chase scrapped for the garbage that it is, I am very skeptical Brian and his loyal lieutenants are ready to do that. They have been so pleased with themselves, the about face would be something to witness.
 
Will teams with cars damaged in the first race have enough time and resources to fix the car for the second race, esp. if they've already pulled out the backup car? Will they start carrying entire replacement engines in the hauler? Will we have to accept that some cars are unrepairable and that the second race of a weekend may run with an undersized field?

So many questions, but I'd accept a lot in exchange for killing the Chase.
 
Does anyone who follows the NASCAR subreddit know if there is much history of hoaxes there? This would be a considerable one if that screengrab is completely fake.

Have a 1 hour halftime break and focus on the mechanics doing work on the car in between commercials. Tool companies would go ballistic to get involved.

What I know about reddit could be written on a lugnut with a fat tipped Sharpie. It's another of way too many social networks for me to investigate, much less keep up with. I never looked at it before a couple of weeks ago when we were discussion cable cutting.
 
If the words "Timed Races" or "Caution Clocks" are uttered during the State of the Sport speech, and they aren't uttered in the contest of "Timed races and caution clocks aren't happening", I'm done.

WAITAMINUTE. You mean they'd both be on the same day??? Not like IndyCar doubleheaders, on Saturday and Sunday???

I'm not sure how I'd feel about that. I could see the big teams bringing an emergency backup car, and the skins to make it look like any of their cars as needed. Lower tier teams may rent out their backups for more money than they would make running in a second race.

For the most part, I'd start with the tracks that have only one race, excluding Darlington and the road courses. If Phoenix or New Hampshire get split, I'd go with 200 lap races, not 150s.

I don't see how they could run two races on the same day. With any kind of break in between, the TV coverage would be pushing 4.5 hours. But that leaves the question of when you run the supporting race. Would there even be a supporting race for a double header? Would that open up more X / Truck dates for standalones at other tracks?
 
If this is true I would assume the chase is dead. Double points doesn't matter if there is a "win and your in" chase.

Not a fan of double points races either way. Twin races on the same day might be interesting but people will bitch the second their driver is destroyed in the first and can't get their backup ready for the second.

There's another point for speculation. Would they sandbag in the first to be sure they had a car for the second, esp. if they have to start the first in a backup. A low-point but controlled finish in the first combined with a top 10 in the second might be preferable to wrecking out of the first and nothing in the second. Will the second race see the return of Start and Park as damaged cars struggle up to minimum speed for a few laps?

So many questions about something we aren't even sure will happen.
