Fontana Sprint Cup thread.

Many people found the race plenty entertaining.:)

And to deny that 2 other major competing events had an impact on ratings would be incredibly ignorant.

I'd rather any type of racing before watching baseketball or golf. I don't care how boring the race is, there's no way it's worse then those 2. Just my 2 cents lol

It's the casual fans that determine whether or not the ratings rise or fall. Hard core fans like ourselves never miss the races regardless of what else is on. But it would be ridiculously moronic to deny that the casual fans may choose another sport over NASCAR from time. Especially marquee events like those broadcast Sunday.

I'll give you Golf - unless it's a Major anyway...
As for Hoops, I will *sometimes* watch a Basketball Game live and record the race on my DVR - cause I know that with all of the effen commercial breaks, I will be able to catch up to the live feed by the end of the broadcast.

Some of the fans who went to the race may not have found it entertaining. The question was about the fans who didn't go.

I was at the track Saturday and though the N'wide race had some "slower" moments, I thoroughly enjoyed it. And I watched the CUP broadcast on FOX and I thought the race provided an excellent example of horsepower, speed, handling, strategy and weather-related urgency from the start. (That's why I gave it a 9.0).

North Carolina playing Kansas and Tiger winning for the first time in nearly 3 years definitely hurt the ratings. If not for keeping track of the PGA on my phone I'd have been flipping the channel from time to time to see how Tiger was faring.
If you get beat by GOLF there's something wrong.

You couldn't get one of those 50% off Bobby Ford tickets for Sunday?

Golf is a mainstream sport. NASCAR is a fringe sport. And when Tiger Woods is battling for a win on Sunday it's ratings spike. I don't know if golf beat NASCAR in ratings this week but there's no doubt that some casual fans chose golf over NASCAR yesterday.

True fans wouldn't even think about flipping over to see what Tiger was doing.Especially during a race that was so incredibly freakin awesome

There are sooooooooo many effen commercial breaks during a race telecast that there is PLENTY of time to check in on the Links Action - especially when one has Picture In Picture!!

Excuses,excuses

Perhaps Sundays race was TOO exciting for the casual fan, and they switched to golf.

I think the problem here is we never hear about Football or Baseball fans switching over to Golf and hurting ratings. For the most part, Fontana fits the stereotypical turn left and go in circles description of NASCAR racing.

You are obviously wrong. It IS possible to pause the race on a DVR, flip over to something else for an update (or grab a beverage, hit the restroom, etc.) and resume the race without missing anything.

As far as your assertion that I am not a true NASCAR fan because I have interests that reach beyond NASCAR, I can assure you that you couldn't be any further off base.

Casual fans would watch golf or basketball over NASCAR regardless of how exciting the race is unless there is a battle for the win over final few laps. Some of you people are stuck in the NASCAR bubble and fail to realize that NASCAR is a niche sport with a relatively small (albeit loyal) following.

I'd say golf is a niche sport too. It's for old white folk / yuppies / or black people who just like tiger.

To be fair, we all started playing golf partly as an excuse to go get drunk and have some laughs away from our wives. My worst day golfing is better than my best day at work. :D

:bsflag:

I rarely wave the BS flag, but you earned it with that nonsense.

I play golf and find it frustrating, but still play to keep the wife happy, she loves it. Oh yea I do love to pour down a couple of 9 beers while I'm at it.

You are veiwing
things from within the NASCAR bubble. You have to step outside the bubble to see the big picture.

The vast majority of sports fans view NASCAR as a hillbilly sport that requires no athletic ability and they view NASCAR fans as dumb rednecks. I wish that were not the case but it is. And while some of those people watch parts of several races per year, NASCAR is not often their first choice. So you can deny the fact that other sports siphon off viewers all you want but it doesn't make it any less true.

This attitude does exist within Michigan. My brother loves telling his buddies what NASCAR stands for.

NON ATHLETIC SPORTS CENTERED AROUND REDNECKS.

I tell him that all the other sports are merely games and only require one ball.

I have had several lively discussions defending NASCAR to friends, family and co-workers. They just just do not get it. Never will.

Some sport fans do get it. But getting them to understand the part of adjusting the car, they just don't understand. And Im tired of trying to explain how the whole thing happens. And what they are trying to do. And that a top 5 is a friggin awesome finish. And what Tony Stewart is doing is really good.

My best friend started watching, and that's cool. But it takes a certain type of fan to love it.

At least season 5 of Mad Men began last night. It made for a great ending to a frustrating day of racing. :)

Having a favorite driver/team is the key. That's what gets people hooked.

And you can stick your head in the sand and say Golf is to blame for NASCAR's huge fall in the ratings, but anyone with the ability to reason knows it's because the racing, and the show, have changed for the worse. Even NASCAR shows more old clips when they promote their racing, and they rarely use footage from these boring 2 milers.

C'mon, man. You are a smart guy so you have to realize that Tiger winning a tourney and North Carolina playing Kansas for a Final Four birth could have easily siphoned of a million viewers. I would bet that very few (if any) TV's in any of the 25 sports bars around here was showing the race on Sunday.

If you don't like the racing at ACS then simply don't watch.
