How would you fix the All Star race?

My idea -- -- no fan vote

Other sports have a fan vote ,I think . Seems to me that baseball does. I don't see the harm in involving the fans .It's just an exhibition race. It's like ..Brad had pictures of fans on his car this weekend .It wasn't the true Miller paint scheme but I was ok with it.

My idea, invert part of the field once or twice.. Also redistribute the purse... They were offering an extra million to whoever can win every segment.. That would be extremely boring to watch unfold. Also, No ones trying anything crazy for a million.. I'm not Sprint/NASCAR, it's not my money.. but I feel like they're being cheap. Look how extravagant the driver intros were... Up the purse to 3 mil+ and let em eat!

Yeah I didn't entirely understand my own suggestion either but on paper it sounds better than what happened last night.

If the racing is good more often than not, they wouldn't need to use more and more gimmicks to keep people tuned in. Charlotte is often a boring track, but it's in the right place. Put a freaking chicane in these tracks or make all 4 corners different so we get away from the perfect car with the perfect balance and back to real driving. Geez, I don't know the answer, but nascar is losing me fast. I just can't get excited most Sundays. I've been recording and chasing the races for some time now, and more and more I FF thru more than just the commercials. I think I'm now sold on the chase, because the product really stinks all too often.

Hockey didn't have much trouble taking over my DVR the past 2 weeks.

I like the idea of running at tracks where the series does not normally run. that is a great idea. iowa and irwindale come to mind. I would also like to see a segment where they have 10 minutes to do whatever they want to the car. change out shocks springs etc

I know, but its really just a excuse to get Danica/some old geezer who was popular in the 80s into the race.

As it is in baseball , but the fans seem to enjoy getting involved (at least the numbers that vote seem quite high ). It's kinda like American Idol , the judges have their favorites , but the fan involvment is important to the show.

Definition of GEEZER

: a queer, odd, or eccentric person.

So are you a young geezer then.

Have a math test after each segment. Move the venue everyyear. Kill the fan vote. Eliminate all Non All Stars. Put
Andy in charge. Have a hockey game going on in the infield at the same time. Have the crew from the.Northwestern go against the crew of the Time Bandit in the Pit Crew Challenge.
I Have to cut my grass now. I'll be back...

Here's how to fix the race though. :)

1.) Tear down Charlotte Motor Speedway.
2.) Build a short track in its place.
3.) Pick a format and stick with it.

Or you can skip steps one and two and just run the race at The Dirt Track at CMS.

Comments from drivers and a crew chief:

“Before we came this weekend, you knew in a 10-lap segment at night at Charlotte whoever gets the lead first on that final 10 laps, it’s not going to be close,’’ said fourth-place finisher Kasey Kahne. “I knew it when they set the rules. I think everybody did.

“When you’re racing at night on a track with this much grip ... you’re just not going to pass cars. Whoever gets the lead first is going to win the race every single time.’’

“That’s the way it is on these fast tracks,’’ said Johnson, who collected $1,039,175 for the victory. “You look at any mile and a-half, 2-mile track, in the first couple of laps when everybody is on stickers, you’re going to have that. We’ve seen that here for a long time. We all knew it going into it.’’

“(Johnson) was really, really fast,’‘ Logano said after his career-best All-Star finish. “ Once he got that clean air he was gone.’’

“I think that the amount of tires that we get, half of them should be super softs and the other half should be normal and that gives you an opportunity to try to do your tire strategy,’‘ Knaus said in a nod to what is done in IndyCar. “Once you have super softs, you know they're only going to last 20 laps as opposed to the set that's going to last 60 laps like we're going to run here on a typical weekend. You can strategize, use that. When those tires fall off, that's when you're going to start to see some passing, and in a 20‑lap or 10‑lap segment I think it could be very exciting to see who plays the tire strategy.’’

“I don't foresee it because Goodyear is in a tough spot. They have to build a tire that's going to last. I'm just saying it would make it exciting, because the only way you're going to get passing is to have tire falloff like we have at Atlanta, like we have maybe at Texas when the tires start to fall off. That's the only time that you're going to get it.’’

Makes me wonder why Kasey didn't fight JJ harder on the final restart. He could have really squeezed him in the corners and possibly taken the lead without burning his tires up.

If they insist on keeping the AllStar race they should do the following.

Top 15 from the previous season's points plus the top 2 from the Open. No fan vote, no past winner and no segments. Run a 75 lap feature.

So I guess the chance for another million dollars didn't make anybody race even harder?

If they would just let the trophy queens dress like hottie totties even a bad race woud be more tolerable.

Even the book of Genesis comprehend the need in chapter 1.

three segs, two 40s,ten minute break then 60 laps, pit when you want.

I think that this is the first year that I have ever heard 'no fan vote 'mentioned . I don't think that I ever heard it in baseball either . Anyone else ?

No way to fix it. It's just like the stick and ball sports now, the drivers don't need the money. The race to race in sucked.

I was listening to TMD on Sirius yesterday morning, and the guys that host that show brought up a very good point. They mentioned that, for all the years the All-Star Race has been run, there are only three races that you could really call "classics": 1987, 1989, and 1992. Pretty bad when there have only been three truly memorable races in 29 tries, the most recent being over two decades ago. Bottom line: the All-Star race rarely lives up to all the hype surrounding it.

I don't think any race could ever live up to the expectations created by the hype of the broadcast team. If fans want 90 laps of side by side racing - Charlotte is not the place so expect more and more gimmicks to attract veiwers.

It's just a function of the type of track . Plate races produce side by side racing , so do short tracks , road courses and lots of cautions . What mile and half race tracks do , is allow the fastest car to take the lead and keep widening it , same thing for the second fastest , and the third fastest . Without cautions , no way a slower car can catch a faster car . Why is that a bad thing ? That's racing , and , (at least once in a while) the fastest car SHOULD win . That's what I like about Nascar , all the tracks produce different types of racing and you never know if the winner is going to win by an inch or a mile .:D If the fans would be satisfied with a race like the All Star Race , Nascar wouldn't have to keep trying to make the cars more identical to each other.
