I don't get it.

Soooo they're still going to race this weekend or no?

No ......... Brian has discovered that NOT racing is the best money saving idea of them all. A side benefit to not racing will be that no Goodyear tires will fail to hold air and Kevin Harvick won't have to work so hard at losing yet another race.

I watched the Atlanta race yesterday and I just don't get it. What are the stages supposed to do? If it was supposed to enhance the racing product, then it failed, miserably. IMHO the race would've played out in similar ways regardless of whether or not it had stages. It decreased the amount of "debris" caution. Honestly I think the new Five Minutes of repair rules did more towards that end than the segments did. As for reduction in commercials, yea, no. Maybe I'm wrong on this, but yesterday's race felt like it had the same amount of commercials the races last year did.

As far as I can tell, the stages just made the points system needlessly more complicated. Like I said in the title, I just don't get it.

I think we need to force the drivers to chug enough Monster before the races to make them go bonkers. That will enhance the racing product....I think...

All of sport involves needless complication. Just look at the rules that go into determining which football team gets to pick where in the draft...or gets to play at home in the playoffs...

Heard that the NHL is having some of the same problems as NASCAR in that newer fans are apparently finding the game somewhat boring due to the lack of scoring.

So in order to motivate the guys on the ice to play harder throughout the game, starting next year the league is going to revamp how points are awarded.

Whichever team is leading after each of the first two periods will be awarded one point. The team with the lead at the end of the game will then be awarded three additional points.

They're still working on how to let teams earn some type of advantage during the playoffs based upon how the team performed during a regular season game.

Wonder where they came up that idea . . .

Are you serious?

Regardless, I've never understood the argument that lack of scoring equals lack of excitement. Baseball highlights scoreless games as 'pitchers duels', 'shutouts', 'no hitters', and the holy 'perfect game'. US football calls it a 'defensive battle'. Soccer seems to do nicely world-wide with its level of scoring. Maybe all soccer in the US and hockey need are cool nicknames for low-scoring matches. Call them 'goalie wars' or something; I'm sure someone in sports marketing can come up with better.

Nascar still keeps changing formats, rules, rear spoiler hgt in hopes of "entertaining" racing? I'm getting over nascar & going to ARCA.
Short tracks, dirt tracks & big tracks! Y'all come on down!

Are you serious?

Nope, guess I should've included this :sarcasm: but I didn't think it was necessary at the time.

Just trying to make a point as to how NASCAR has bastardized their product in a way that no other sport would even consider . . . . . IMO.

Watching the IndyCar race this morning. It is so refreshing to see a race being allowed to play out naturally without the BS gimmicks. I expect my NASCAR watching will decline and my Indy watching will increase this season.

Atlanta, Las Vegas, Does anyone else think that 1 1/2 mile tracks are boring? I live 10 minutes from Texas Motor Speedway but I don't go there anymore because it is a boring racetrack just like all the 1 1/2 mile tacks.

Wilbur, welcome.

Yes, many if not most of the members here agree with you about 1.5'ers.

I haven't been a fan of segments or any of these changes, but being objective, the segments really helped the race IMO.

These segment changes have only enhanced what I've been watching. I've got zero problem seeing these teams get rewarded for their positions during the race. Especially knowing that those segment wins will go a long way to helping these teams during the Chase, err, playoffs.
