Is it time for timed races?

I watch every Indy Car race and they are very rarely even close to exciting as any NASCAR race in any division. The damn cars don't even have starters in them which means some fat guys in a pickup have to drive over to start them if someone spins out. If someone thinks that IndyCar racing is better than NASCAR then they clearly need to just STFU and stop watching NASCAR and stay the hell out of NASCAR threads.

I believe that to be the perception but what happens when the next latest thing comes along and instant gratification no longer satiates them?

Adapt and evolve. Without change there is no progress.

Remember that guy who lived near Mount St Helens but refused to evacuate despite imminent death?

Fat guys???

Lets be honest Matt. You don't like Indy car because there are no rednecks or hillbilly's to bust on.

I do but I also don't think that mashed potatoes have been improved upon in a long, long time :) I get what you're saying but trying to please everyone, all the time, is also not without perils.

I agree that forward thinking is a good thing, but remaining true to some foundations is important too.

I love racing, it feels like the way life should be to me. But racing will never be mainstream. I think we just got some false hopes a few years ago.

We are outsiders as far as pop culture is concerned. I am not trying to be abrasive to the world, but we are never going to be at the top of the list. I have accepted that.

So I think we should just do racing the way racing people want it. I am not going to try and be outsider just to do it, but I dont want to twist and contort racing to a template for a crowd that does not care, and probably never will.

Just my two cents.

I agree, 100%

Yeah I think anyway, that Nascar back in the "glory days?" was more of a fad, now it looks like soccer is the new me too I'm cool, sport for them to flock to. So now all the chaos and confusers (more me to) out there with the latest whine are trying to have a field day the other way. The racing in general is better than it ever has been at all levels open and closed wheel. Most of the no's have been because they don't want the racing shortened.

Yeah, sprint cars and midgets suck!

I'm not crazy about the idea of timed races in NASCAR, but I wouldn't mind shorter races. Especially if they were combined with a better setup for race day activities, a good day of racing concluded with a 250-300 mile Cup race would be hard to beat. While we can go back and forth on whether or not open-wheel is better/worse than NASCAR (to which there is no correct answer because GUESS WHAT GUYS EVERYONE HAS DIFFERENT PREFERENCES), I do think one good thing with the IndyCar schedule is that their shorter races throughout the year make the 500-milers, especially Indy, more special.

I wouldn't be okay with them shortening the races and not compensating ticket buyers somehow, though (i.e., shortening a 500-mile Sunday afternoon race to 250-300 miles and still starting it at 1 PM local time). It has to be something that doesn't cheapen the value of the weekend while also adding value to the TV people.

If you go to IndyCar, you'll have Indy Lights, Star Mazda, USF2000 and other races before the IndyCar feature event... much like how short tracks will have multiple divisions before the Late Model race.

Condense the three day shows down to two days and run a race before the Cup... whether it's heat races for the Cup race or an ARCA race or something.

Television likes things in neat time packages. NASCAR racing is prone to weather delays which can really mess up the network programming. But NASCAR races aren't about television convenience, its about the fans. As a fan I like the status quo because I'm used to it. If NASCAR wants to experiment with timed races they should try it in one of the other series.

As far as timed events go, I like the new qualifying process for most races.
FOX and NBC bought and paid for this sport for the next ten years. I figure at some point they'll get what they want, whatever that may be.

Maybe they should have an hour break in the middle of the race so peeps could get in a nappypoo and another dose of their ADHD meds to make it through the end of the terribly long, tedious race.
lol No need, they already do that, at least at Indy last weekend.

I don't know what they want but I know that, at Baltimore, NBC's actually talked IndyCar out of running a timed race one year. And most of the races will be on NBCSN where NASCAR's going to have 20 times as many viewers as anything else they air on that network so I don't see them caring if races "run long".

If we try to find one thing we DO like about Nascar racing for every one thing that we DON'T like, accept what we can't change and appreciate what what we enjoy, we may be a happier bunch when the checkers fly :)

True story: When I was in high school my family went to the fall Cup race at Charlotte. Think it was 2006 (whatever year JJ Yeley thought it would be neat to turn Mark Martin head-on into the wall). My youngest sister was 6 at the time. Around halfway, she went to sleep right there in the turn four seats, cars and all, and didn't wake up until the race was over.

Racing just isn't her thing, I guess. She likes baseball, though, so we've got that in common.

I figure the RTA would also be in favor of condensing race weekends.

The tracks want three day shows. NASCAR's tried to condense race weekends before.

I'd love to see something on Sunday mornings. It's not like NASCAR's on ESPN anymore (as of next year) where they have NFL shows on four different channels all saying the same thing.

It's a tricky balance.

Golf is going through the same thing. They actually have courses experimenting with 15" cups. The purists are in an outrage but the course owners are seeing more people come play and have more fun. Also more kids playing those courses. We live in a different time and there's no going back.

But you sure don't mind calling pretty girls "fat" and saying they need to get their weight under control.

You need to get over it. You've already gotten enough mileage out of exaggerating my comments.

Where is Johanna today? Krissy Wallace? The fact remains that Sponors want drivers that have mass appeal. Skinny chicks look better on TV and in ads.

How many races and championships has Danica won ... in anything?

Kenzie Ruston's going to show Danica how it's done here in a couple years. Or is she too fat?

Today was a good example of why there shouldn't be timed races in nascar. With timed races today's race would have ended at the big wreck, robbing the fans of some great racing.

Timed races is probably the worst idea I could think of for nascar.

I can see it being an issue with FOX/FS1 and all of their college basketball and MLB coverage in the spring. If they get the Turner Sports properties it'll be even worse. They've asked for it before, too.

I'm worried sick about Turner Sports. That gives FOX Sports "March Madness" and the NBA Playoffs. NASCAR will be bottom of the totem pole over there.

I've said for over a year NASCAR would regret re-upping with FOX.
