Khane not in 5 next yr

I'm just talking about putting the kid in the 5. As you said easy solution and natural progression for the kid who has dominated Trucks and Xfinity the last two years. They must have a plan although I just don't see how Byron isn't it.

I think this is just one of those cases where you have to trust the principals involved and yield to their wisdom. HMS will need to be careful as Bowman seems destined to be more like the next Caaey Mears than a regular winner, Chase Elliott is good but can't get the deal closed yet and then adding Byron to the mix might be too much all at one time. JMO.

What do y'all think about HMS hiring Matt Kenseth and Jason Ratcliff for 1-year deal in the 5 car, with the aim of evaluating and upgrading that team... then William Byron to the 5 in 2019? I could see that as a possibility.
I'd pull the trigger on Byron. I don't think he'll learn anything in another year of Xfinty that he wouldn't learn in the first half of the Cup season.

I keep thinking Jr. will eventually bring a team up to cup .. they may need to rework their ownership structure to make it Nascar legal (removing Hendrick ownership). Maybe that is the eventual home of William Byron .. at least until the #48 open up. There are really quite a few options .. the #5 car isn't necessarily earmarked for William Byron. Maybe a veteran will be tabbed for that #5 car for the next few years.

You might be right as I think Bowman will be a bust or at least a Kasey Khane type. Just think Byron is too good to waste another year in Xfinity.

I think Matt wants 5 more years ... but he also wants a good ride. He'd probably take the one year deal and then try to land another deal the next year when maybe more opportunities are available.

IDK what opportunities could arise. SHR already has a bunch of old drivers, JRR and FRR are not options, RCR would be a step down plus they don't have room, HMS is not a long term option so does he replace JMc in the 1 car on a long term deal?

It's possible that Khane was offered 1 more year but has a deal lined up for 2018 and beyond with another organization.

Hendrick did the exact opposite 7 years ago and chose Martin over Keselowski, heck even last year they convinced Jeff to come out of retirement instead of giving Bowman all the seat time. I am liking the youth movement personally and can't wait to see what Byron does at the cup level

A mistake I don't think they're wanting to make again. Martin had a great comeback but choosing to resign him instead of Brad wasn't very smart. Would BK be as successful or more at Hendrick? We will never know but I'm sure Rick can't help but think what might have been.

I don't think HMS did the choosing with MM. I believe MM had a 1 year option and he took it.

how about signing kenseth to a 2 year deal, that will give them time to sort out who get the 5 car. I really like the idea of signing kenseth to a short term deal as a stop gap. I bet he could be picked up for a somewhat reasonable price given the other options out there. he can't go back to roush, penske, the inn is full, gibbs he is leaving. so that mainly means his decent options are SHR and hendrick. SHR has its own issues with sponsorship and downsizing and they are working to keep kurt as it is. matt can win races still, in the right situation he can rattle off multiple wins in a season.

I say either Byron gets the ride or Matt Kenseth signs 1-2 year contract to drive the #5 and once he contract is over Byron replaces him and Matt retires.

I really like Kenseth and hope he finds a ride but I think it's already settled who gets the 5 and that is Byron. The last successful young gun at JRM is now piloting the 24, the one before him was forced to wait too long and he's won a championship with Penske. Not to say Byron is 100% for next season, I just couldn't see them signing Kenseth for two years when Byron is all but the driver for the 5 after another year in Xfinity if not before.

I think Hendrick could use a veteran like Kenseth with two younger guys already in the stable. Johnson and Kenseth can produce consistent results while Elliot and Bowman come into their own.

Elliott would be a 3rd season cup driver with a consistent top 10 points year. Hes already "come into his own".

Danica should stay where she at cause she starting to finish in the 15 every week the last month(cept the glen) so it makes no sense for her to move now when she seem to be getting better.

DP has had some much better than usual finishes of late.

Didn't Kasey and Ford have some kind of beef at one time?
When he first came to Cup with Dodge, he was originally thought to be In the Yates pipeline. But he has raced for Ford in Cup with RPM

Kahne is a talent and will land a ride somewhere. He fits better as the top driver on a 2nd tier team, so this move may prove beneficial to him

Well, soon the _____ to the 5 jokes will have to die. Damn.
I'm already on record as saying the "_____ to the #5" jokes will start up as soon as Kahne's replacement make the slightest mistake. That will probably be during the first stage of his or her Duel race.

Matt will be 46 next March. I see him in the 5 for a one year deal and then retiring, then starting his own team with other retired drivers. he's not very good at the end of a microphone so that pretty much eliminates a tv spot. Oh wait, he's kinda quiet so that would work out better, especially on nbc

*** Cough, COUGH, COUGH ***
Casey Atwood!

Excuse me, I had something caught in my throat.
Logano was rushed but he ended up coming out ahead, how the climate is in NASCAR these days, the potential for reward outweighs the risk. Byron has sponsors, he will be a whole lot cheaper than Kenseth and he's been successful in everything he's driven thus far. Worst case scenario if he doesn't work out, don't resign him and on to the next one as they've done before.

Larson has no reason to move IMHO.

I wonder if Kurt is really resigning with SHR or not.

I'd like to see him at Roush again and help those guys out, but I dobut he would want to return to them.
Larson isn't going anywhere. Both Felix Sabates cars ( :p ) have been consistently in the top 10 since about the midway point last season, and Chip has that Indy ride carrot to dangle in front of him.
