NASCAR and the younger crowd

Nascar is just a stale sport that will never grab the attention of the majority of society. People want fast paced sports with lots of action and excitement. Nascar runs way too many cookie cutters (Sunday afternoon naps) that make up basically the whole schedule. The racing is pretty dull and everybody knows the big teams will dominate at these tracks. The only races I truly look forward to are the road courses and that's twice a year. Gimmicky inventions such as the chase and knockout qualifying also haven't helped matters. Nascar needs to drastically change up and diversify their schedule or become the Indycar Series

NASCAR and F1 are different enough as brands that the two probably shouldn't be compared when it comes down to determining what does and doesn't work to attract young fans.

Fighting/tension/rivalry/storyline etc among teams and/or players are prevalent in all major US team sports (they have the luxury of geographic tensions...city vs city). And were especially prevalent in NASCAR back in the day that most older NASCAR fans remember fondly. I mean...the sport was put on the national map because of a fight! And I'm not even advocating that punches be thrown. But the sport desperately needs rivalries, tensions, wars of words etc. Drivers usually do a good job of it the second they get out of the car...but then they close their mouths for 6 straight days so as to keep the sponsor image.

What interest is there for a young kid to watch? Why would you tell them to give NASCAR a chance? If you had an audience of high school freshmen who grew up in central NJ, with very little exposure, what would you tell them?

Honestly...if I didn't know as many people as I know in the sport personally, and have business relations with the teams I do, I doubt I'd watch. I never did before. And even now I'm not glued to my TV. I find it's a "sport" with very little drama.

I agree with a lot of this, Petty and Allison respected each other but they weren't buddies. And I am pretty sure that Waltrip and Bobby really disliked each other, you could sense the rivalry.

Contrast that to the run ins that JJ and Gordon had in 2010 or 2011. They may still have some contempt but it was quickly brushed aside for the good of the company. Vanilla wafers might as well sponsor the team.

Multicar teams are great for the teams, but not so much for the fans. It brings conformity to something meant to be wild.

I only knew north ran V-6's. I can't remember the series but someone was running 4 bangers at Daytona in the 80's. Sounded like a herd of angry bumble bees!

One of the answers is right beneath NASCAR's nose. We've only had three short track races so far this year but two of them created a couple of the most memorable and heated races of the year in Martinsville and Richmond. There are too many tracks like Texas where NASCAR has to create a GWC to make it mildly interesting but special interests prevent this from being fixed.

Say what? You said previously you were a poor college student with no money yet you're driving a hybrid? I know, daddy's old car, the 2013 huh?
Its a 2006 & we split the cost down the middle while I pay the insurance n gas. Maybe because Im paying for that, textbooks & groceries with a part time job in school, full time out of school, is why im that poor college kid. It aint easy but I make it work, just like thousands of other college students in america. I get needed help from family, but that is what family is for. Geez. Id love to talk to racing instead of being politically attacked now if yall dont mind.

Ole' Bob is still working on his super-sleuth diploma.

But the short tracks and road courses get the lowest ratings and lowest attendance. I want more short tracks as much as the next guy, but......

Its ok. Learned along time ago that if someone is trying so hard to be wrong, just let them be wrong. No point in trying to show their ass up, when they are already showing theirs off to everyone.

A lot of people have really short attention spans these days. They don't have time to sit around for 3 and a half hours watching a race. I think shortening the races might help. I think most F1 races are around 90 minutes long. Also, the stupid Chase playoff system is causing a lot of old timers to lose interest and it's confusing to new fans because the rules keep changing every year.

Yeah, original called the Baby Grand series. In the 80's many teams used the 4 banger Pontiac 2.5 iron duke

One of the things that irks me the most about the fan base as a whole. I love that we have a good group of serious fans on here that enjoy road courses and short tracks and aren't too fond of restrictor plate races. It's really disappointing to see Daytona and Talladega get the best ratings when passing is like fishing for minnows and the announcers jerk each other waiting for the Big One. Doesn't help with the stigma of being a NASCAR fan at all.

That series turned into the Goody's Dash Series for awhile.. I remember seeing them at Daytona during speed weeks every year. They would slide down the banking and flip once they got to the banking. Scary little cars on a super speedway.

Let me do my best Allen Bestwick impression:

"When's the big wreck gonna happen?! Who's gonna be in it?!"

"Everyone scrambling for position hoping they're not involved in the big wreck!"

"The tension is growing in the closing laps here at Talladega! Will there be a big wreck?!"

I did roadside assistance for MB for over 5 years, this simply just doesnt exist. Not only do people not now how to change a flat, they can barely put gas in their cars. Even worse is when I would bail them out infront of their wife or girlfriend at 3am on the side of the highway, they didnt know how to tip either... Keep in mind, it was a free service.
What's MB. Mercedes Benz?

Take em to a race track. That's how I got one of my friends hooked. I'm taking another one of my friends this August. Not a cup race, a local race. The big boy races ARE guys going in circles for 3 hours. At the local short track they'll see the intensity of close racing and bumper-to-bumper racing.

This has been a big one for me. Brian keeps f**king with the format every couple years. What we end up with is 5 different scenarios showing who would have won the championship under which format, which makes it hard for a championship to seem legitimate.

I'm talking about Division 1 college athletes at the big programs, who do have 100% scholarships. Spare me the Div2 Lacrosse player who only got a 50% scholarship. Yeah, for him, it's ******* slavery.

Not even every Division I athlete has a free ride. Walk-ons, stuff like that. Also, those scholarships are year-by-year and contingent on a number of factors. Get an injury on the NCAA's plantation, **** you, your scholarship's revoked. Only reason that didn't happen to Kevin Ware is because MSNBC and CBS News were all over the NCAA like white on rice and were ready to pounce.

Race 36 races yet only the last 10 count for the championship. A plan as screwed up as that as that could only have come from the brain.

High school football is popular in Texas. Should HS players in Texas be paid if the school is making money on the football program?

I hate the Chase but the new points system is better than the previous Chase. If you're going to have a playoff, do it right.

The racing is better, that's for sure. Showing up all those who insisted drivers always raced for the win every race.

Lets just hope the Brain doesn't get confused and bring back the wildcard.

I haven't heard a single driver say "We had a good points day today". Brian France finally took points racing out of the equation.

Should be this:

Mostly, but we'll start hearing about points from a few drivers very soon. It's still way better than before.

I would still like to have a split championship, one for points, one for wins. Then we can talk about the unified champ!

And when Darth Vader wins both, the fans will complain and demand another new championship format and talk about "Jimmie never won it with the old format".

I don't think the new format is gonna last though, because a) Brian France can't leave the championship format alone, and b) it hasn't been the savior NASCAR thought it would be.
I can't say I'll mourn it, unless they come up with something even worse. B)
