NASCAR - Brian France - To-Do List

How do you keep a car from being turned? I'd think that in any idea, safety should be the first and foremost consideration. Having an open window on the race car would be an invitation to trouble IMO.

Maybe I don't understand the problem. Removing the rear window and side windows will allow air to pass to the trailing car. Going to a spoiler mounted at the top of the window opening would keep airflow simpler, without much concern for how the inside of the car is shaped.

Ok, maybe I'm crazy to think that if the car turns backwards, most of the air would flow out the side windows and a large pop up over pressure panel on the roof would release the rest. All of this would slow the car dramatically and keep that 3,400 lbs from lifting off.

I guess I'm crazy, but if nascar is dead set against removing the splitter and slowing the cars, along with a shorter and lower spoiler, that pass killing aero push / aero advantage will remain.

The chase isn't going away so require at least one win to make the chase. That means Harvicks, Truax currently would not be in this year.

.
You must also win at least one chase event to be the champion as well.

If I was Brian France #2.....We have an awesome looking car for 2013 and they should race as good as they look. Gone are the Goodyear tires that last last way too long and have no grip. Also to help cure that aero push problem cars must run the air box open. Also the rear bumper will be higher to allow the air to escape from underneath the car. This will also allow the driver behind to send a more illustrated message that you're holding him up.

#1 Build a "Bristol" high banked 1/2 mile track in Wisconsin Dells, Wi...All the infrastructure is there waiting. Thousands of hotel rooms that can fit all budgets. 1000's of campsites also are available. Run the race in mid Sept after the peak summer season is winding down. It would be the most "FAMILY FRIENDLY" race on the schedule.....

#2 Resurect an "IROC" type series again. Give the 4 manufacturers one chance to out bid each other to use their brand of........"TRUCK"......Make it a SPEC truck and motor, with testing done by a few former "retired" racers. Max 12 trucks in ea race, drivers draw numbers for the truck and starting position. Start the races 3 wide 4 rows deep. NO plates @ DEGA...Drivers are awarded the seat by fan vote only...$500k to win...Call it the NASCAR (Name of title sponsor here) All American Series...Trucks are painted Red...White or Blue ONLY...

I don't think it would take much at all! The IROC Series ran on the Road Course and the ROLEX Series does well also.

ROLEX cars are built for road courses and don't turn into torpedos on dirt or grass as easily. How fast did those IROC cars go?

The problem that I see has nothing to do with aero. Safety is what I'm talking about. How about when that car gets turned around in that wreck @ say 150 that a piece of one of the other car involved enters the confines of that car through the open back/side window. I don't think that NASCAR wants to subject the competitors to the risk of crap flying around the inside of the car. It's simply a safety issue.

The Southern 500 at Darlington needs to return to Labor Day weekend where it belongs. It was a tradition that never should have been ruined in the first place.

lol Sorry. Steel grate it to protect the driver even more than plexi can. Along with the heavy seats, they will be safer than ever. That would let air flow to the following cars, reducing the clean air advantage. It would make a huge difference, especially when you consider all the effort made to shorten the side skirts for a little more airflow.

Don't they race with no right side window on many tracks?

Don't they race with no right side window on many tracks?

Only short tracks are run without passenger side windows. The windows are to prevent the car from being lifted off the ground, should the car get sideways. The air is routed OVER the car's top, and helps to keep it grounded.

Simply get back to what Nascar had in the 80s, cars with smaller spoilers, no splitter and looked liek something you see on the street without the roll cage.

Lot's of ideas. Here's the list that I've compiled so far from your comments. If I've missed any let me know.

Create a NASCAR app for all cell phone companies. - NASCAR has finally gotten their online rights back in 2013 after falling behind the times with Turner. I think that we are going to be seeing a lot of things happening on the digital/social media side of things on the internet. Give me something that I can follow the race on my phone. I'd like it to be something that I can use at or away from the track. Something along the lines of what is available through Track Pass. Real-time timing/scoring type info. Scanner feeds.

Temporary kinks on 1.5ers - Start installing temporary kinks at turn exit on all momentum 1.5 mile tracks. Other series do this with their temporary road courses, so all the equiptment already exists. Doing it on an oval will require some work to extend the apron for these wide esses and feather the transition on and off the banking. Make the turn 2 S subtle and wide to avoid restart mayhem.

Multiple car feeds - NASCAR implements camera and audio feed system that ties multiple car feeds together during a race. 1 swivel camera looking out the back and sides, 1 camera looking out the front and sides, with live audio feed from the drivers. EVERY car gets this setup. When the feed truck see's a battle going on, a mouse click on each car ties their cameras and audio feeds together for quick switching. Call it battle #1, and feed it full screen or side by side so fans can watch cars squeeze and bump and scream at each other by switching from one car to the other. Switch from car to car, along with driver audio, and point the cameras for the best view. 2 extra operators could handle each battle as they come up. Who cares if the battle is back in the field. Head to head racing is great to watch, but fans at home rarely get to see it. Mandate use of this system in all TV contracts.

Baffle assembly - A baffle assembly with a motor and processor that splices into existing radiator shrouds that will close off air when activated. It's activated buy pressing a bar button attached to the front bumper, either inside our outside the nose piece. Depending on race temperatures, nascar will load race profiles into the processors memory through a USB port. Simple formulas will let nascar control how long a car can push by controlling how much and how fast the baffle closes AND how slowly it opens back up after the cars disengage. If the front end gets too damaged, nascar can allow a team to quickly disable the system with a USB dongle and race under a no-push rule.

Cut side pipes back 2 inches. - Have NASCAR mandate that side pipes be cut back 2 inches. A spring steel plate with beveled openings and pipe extenders will be attached to the frame to prevent tire cutting, and once again allow drivers to lean on each other without risking disasterous results.

New race tracks to run on - Ever turn on a Nascar race and think to yourself didn't I see this last week? Chances are you did. 1.5 mile tracks litter the Nascar schedule. Atlanta, Las Vegas, Texas, Charlotte, ChicagoLand, Kansas, Kentucky are all 1.5 mile ovals. Throw in the 2 mile tracks at Michigan and California and the 2.5 triangle at Pocono and you have half of the Nascar schedule. If I'm Brian France this is the first thing we need to address. We need some race tracks.

Last lap, race to the line when possible - On the last lap if a crash happens, as long as it is not going to be passed by cars at full speed, race to the line. I hate having the field frozen.

Daytona July race on the road course - The Road Course at Daytona is stellar! I would like to see the July CUP Race on that track configuration.

Require at least one win to make the chase.

Build a "Bristol" high banked 1/2 mile track in Wisconsin - All the infrastructure is there waiting. Thousands of hotel rooms that can fit all budgets. 1000's of campsites also are available. Cure that aero push problem - Cars must run the air box open. Raise the rear bumper higher to allow the air to escape from underneath the car.

Run the Southern 500 on the Labor Day weekend - Darlington needs to return to Labor Day weekend where it belongs. It was a tradition that never should have been ruined in the first place.

Get back to the 80's - get back to what Nascar had in the 80s, cars with smaller spoilers, no splitter and looked liek something you see on the street without the roll cage.

Smaller engine - Run a smaller engine producing no more than 500hp.

Because of the cars weight, I would like to see 650 - 700. I don't want them going too slow or burning up all the time.
A 500hp car could easily go 195 at Daytona or Dega. I believe that the restricted engines on the plate tracks produce in the range of 430hp. If you are talking 650-700hp that isn't much of a reduction from what we have right now. Get it down to the 500 range and the plates can be eliminated as long as the aero package is changed. I say so what if the cars aren't hitting 210 going into the corners at Michigan, 175-180 would be plenty fast enough. Unfornately I don't see Nascar ever doing this.

I feel the same way. Speed doesn't equal better racing, IMO. It actually limits the contact that is such a big part of stock car racing. I'm talking about leaning, bumping and banging. I'm sure with proper gearing and shifting, they could do 195 with 500 hp and a sloped front end, but I don't think they would jump off the corners too well. But 500 hp would put them in range of 6 cylinder OHC, which is more what a 'stock' car is today. If nascar went to OHC and full body styling, we would see VW, Nissan, Hyundai and many of the other brands people buy today. There was a time when 90% of the world bought a GM, Ford or Chrysler, but those days are long gone. Why would an owner of those other brands see the charm of todays CoT? I truely believe this is the single biggest reason nascar's fanbase is so old. They relive their memories of nascar past, while potential new fans don't see any connection to stock cars.

Man , I used to love going to Speedweeks at Daytona on a Wednesday or Thursday and watch those little four cylinders buzz around the track . Daytona Dash series , I think they were called . I'd love to see them race those , they sounded neat with that high pitched whine . Kinda like Indy cars . Great idea .

The sound is why I wouldn't like nascar to go to 6 cylinders, but seeing the sport grow is more important to me than the sound of the car. Toyota was the only manufacturer willing to design a pushrod engine just to join nascar.

Years ago the Busch Series used 6 cylinder engines exclusively. I effen hated that sound!!!
Fortunately, NASSCAR came to their senses and went back to V8 engines after a few years...

V8 overhead cam engines may bring some new manufacturers to the sport, along with fans of their cars, international drivers and sponsors, etc. I'm surprised Japan hasn't found a Japanese driver to enter nascar yet.

Hideo Fukuyama, look him up fendster and bore us with the details. :D

NA$$CAR will never go away from pushrod engines so just get over that, FB.

I could see them going to a 6-speed trans before they would switch to overhead cams!

Yeah, because pushrod engines are so stock. NASCAR has their heads up their asses if they expect young fans to show up while we old schoolers relive old memories.

How did the concept of 'stock car' racing become such a mystery?

  1. Get rid of the Chase
  2. More short tracks
  3. Get rid of the Chase
  4. Race cars that look like street cars
  5. Get rid of the Chase
  6. Quit competing with race teams for sponsors
  7. Get rid of the Chase
  8. More road courses
  9. Get rid of the Chase
  10. Ask that tracks lower ticket prices and work with area hotels to make a race weekend so people outside the 1% can afford to go to a race
  11. Get rid of the Chase
  12. Heat races for qualifying
  13. Get rid of the Chase
  14. Shorter races and a shorter season
  15. Get rid of the Chase
  16. Bring back North Wilkesboro
  17. Get rid of the Chase
  18. Bring back Rockingham
  19. Get rid of the Chase

The Chrysler HEMI V8, the Dodge Viper V10 and the GM LS7 V8 are all pushrod engines .
But look how long it took for NA$$CAR to adopt EFI...

I guess the Charger / Challenger are the most stock cars on the track these days.

I try to be classy but as a matter of integrity for those struggling with the words, perhaps the respected words of William Wallace are applicable and hits the spot

William: "I'm not finished. Before we let you leave, your commander must cross that field, present himself before this army, put his head between his legs, and kiss his own arse".
