Sorry I meant NBC

@mikemulhern

NewHampshire: BrutonSmith says NBC taking over NASCAR 2nd half 2014. asked him 3X specifically, & he repeated yes, yes, yes.

ESPN clearly doesn't want it. Why not?
Not sure and as far as I'm concerned a switch to NBC is fine by me. An 'over the air network' makes more sense anyhow. To have all of the points paying races available to every household seems like a good thing to me.

maybe nobody wanted ESPN..maybe somebody will come up with a racing channel..NBC do ya hear meeeeeeeeeee as I am sitting here watching a bunch of dudes kicking the ball around...6 minutes until nascar coverage.

Hmmm, Bruton and Mulhern, not sure I should believe either of them. IF it's true I'm a big fan of the move. NBC/NBCSN will treat NASCAR well.

Once a new wife is found and a divorce requested, best to just get it over with as soon as possible.

I wouldn't believe it normally but this was discussed a few weeks ago. I believe Brian France or some other uppity up was saying that NBC was interested in taking over 2014 and ESPN and TNT were game as well.

Yeah, from Jayski, dated Aug 28:

  • ESPN, TNT could exit NASCAR early UPDATE: ESPN and Turner Sports are talking with NASCAR about getting out of their broadcast rights agreement a year early, a move that could allow Fox Sports and NBC Sports Group to become the sports broadcasters next year. Its unlikely that the four TV companies will be able to reach a deal, sources say. But the fact that these types of talks are occurring is precedent-setting in an industry where live sports rights are held sacred. For at least the past decade, no rights holder has exited a major media agreement with a property early. ESPN and Turner executives told the series that they are interested in forgoing the final year of their contract. Fox and NBC executives told NASCAR that they are interested in picking up those rights. And sources say NASCAR executives are open to the switch. But any deal faces significant hurdles. Sources said it would have to be a complete switch, not a partial one in which Turner exits its six Sprint Cup races or ESPN exits part of its Nationwide Series season. That means it would require an agreement between four competitors ESPN, Turner, Fox and NBC and one property, which would be difficult to structure. ESPN and Turner Sports are willing to sell their rights back to NASCAR for some sort of compensation. Fox Sports and NBC Sports Group are willing to buy the rights from NASCAR, but they feel they should be compensated for letting ESPN and Turner Sports out of their deals early. As the middleman, NASCAR would have to navigate those opposing interests. Representatives from the four media companies, as well as NASCAR, declined comment. ESPN and Turner Sports have told NASCAR they are prepared to carry the races next year, but both would prefer avoiding that lame-duck status. Both opted not to submit final bids to retain NASCAR rights when the sport held TV negotiations last month, and they see upside in exiting their deals a year early.(full story at theSports Business Daily)(8-26-2013)
UPDATE: Statement From NASCAR Vice President Of Broadcasting And Production Steve Herbst On 2014 Broadcast Partners: Despite recent reports to the contrary, nothing substantive has been presented to NASCAR regarding broadcast partners plans to alter our TV agreement in 2014. Were very happy with our current broadcast partners and fully expect and are excited to be back with FOX, Turner and ESPN next year. These types of discussions happen regularly across the sports television landscape, very rarely resulting in changes to a media rights agreement.(NASCAR)(8-28-2013)

I remember it being talked about but there's been nothing announced. I still consider anything that either Mulhern or Bruton say to be suspect.

prolly contingent on fox also buyin out 1st half from espn too. ?
fox buyin out tnt too.

Did you notice the hottie soccer studio announcer babe almost fall over when she went to uncross her legs....She's not to steady on those heels....lol

I doubt this will happen but I won't be surprised if it does. I've been thinking it was more likely that Fox Sports 1 would buy out TNT's contract.

Let me try to speak in hawg:

nba ... contract renewals ... big money ... fox espn bidding war? ha!

Okay, that didn't work. ESPN is trying to save up its money for NBA. If NBC buys them out, ESPN gets that money and saves money on production costs = money saved up for NBA bidding war with Fox Sports 1. TNT's also part of the current NBA contract and Fox and NBC might try to oust them as well. It'd be a huge coup for FS1 and NBCSN if either, or both, got NBA. If ESPN and TNT lost NBA, it'd be a devastating blow - much more so to ESPN than TNT.

No it didn't, I didn't need a translator. :D

Bruton said he was going to build an inch-by-inch replica of Nürburgring in the Nevada desert outside Las Vegas. What happened to that?

And recreate the elevation? He wants to move ALOT of dirt.

Good. I'm finally happy this is happening. Majority of people that are NASCAR fans ain't gonna pay out the ass for cable tv, can't afford it, so now we can finally watch the whole season on regular TV. No more having to look up what channel the race is on (FOX, NBC, ESPN, or TNT). Simple.

I doubt the whole second half will be on over the air NBC.

You do know that the original 2015+ TV deal with Fox and NBC has a number of Cup races on FS1 and NBCSN, right?

Via Jayski, starting with the new 2015 contract, seven of Fox's Sprint Cup races will be on Fox Sports 1 and 13 of NBC's races will be shown on NBC Sports Net. NBC is showing more races on cable than on broadcast television. This is why Fox and NBC overpaid NASCAR for the TV rights, they want to force people to watch their cable sports channels that nobody is watching.

So you assume the majority of NASCAR fans are poor and/or cheap as well as too lazy to find out which channel the race is on. Nice.

I don't assume I know. Growing up in several trailer parks & all of my surrounding neighbors were huge NASCAR fans but only could watch half the season because we only had the rabbit ears. Otherwise we'd listen to it on the radio. Why do you think TV ratings are down? Theyre only down because alotta fans can only watch half the season. Hell, until I got to college I couldn't see races on ESPN & TNT. The people on this forum ain't the only NASCAR fans on the block ya know

Could you imagine her post race interviews?

dunno, she just might be able to liven up what otherwise might just be a yawn-fest . . .

That is true but the sad fact of it is, no sport is on free tv anymore in its entireity. Even the NFL the most popular sport here is on cable. Ratings are not down there just different in how TV broadcasting is now.

Yeah, like I said a couple months ago, cable/satellite is the TV norm is in this country now and has been for 20 years. Sucks for people who can't afford it or don't want it, but it is what it is. Live sports are all going to cable and all the best entertainment programs are on cable now too.

Yeah it was a slow shift but ever since the late 90s, alot more premiere sports, TV shows have popped up on cable.. I think the next evolution is pay per watch or total internet viewing. Cable/sat companies taking a hit from all the web streams.

Yeah, that'll be the next big shift.

The NFL only has two games a week on cable though, so it's still very convenient for fans.

Nascar fanbase does skew somewhat lower income than the national avg, but they can afford cable/sat. 90%+ of homes have that.
Richest fanbase of the major sports, on average, is hockey actually.
