NBC taking over second half of 2014? Consider the source, either one of them.

Nascar fanbase does skew somewhat lower income than the national avg, but they can afford cable/sat. 90%+ of homes have that.
Richest fanbase of the major sports, on average, is hockey actually.

Not really surprising since Hockey tends to be an elitest, frankly white sport. it's not where you just pick up a ball and shoot hoops.

Bottom line for me is, I get to see every Nascar race but it's not why I have cable.. some fans may be like that but I'm a big fan of all sports and you need cable to really keep up with all sports.

I refuse to waste money on cable TV.

We're fools, I swear. We pay money to get channels that still have as many commercials as free TV. And when we get a racing network, it airs scripted reality TV, all day. MTV doesn't have music, and the Weather Channel is moving away from forecasting.

I know the AM radio guys try to tell us otherwise, but when I drive around rural NC and SC I see tons of trailers and run-down cars with some sort of NASCAR sticker or flag on them.Paying for cable can't be easy for those folks.

That is true but the sad fact of it is, no sport is on free tv anymore in its entireity. Even the NFL the most popular sport here is on cable. Ratings are not down there just different in how TV broadcasting is now.
I do not know about the rest of the country, but when my local city team is playing the game is always on a local channel. No cable needed for that

Fine, don't pay for it. I'll think about you when I'm watching the race tomorrow or the 20+ races starting 2015.

So you're defending spending hundreds of dollars a year for one or two channels you'll watch for the race, another 10ish channels that you could find interest in, and then another 80 channels that you skip right over every time? While in my experience using cable, I usually realize I'm watching something interesting on one of the local channels anyway... If I want to watch a sporting event I'll usually just stream it online and HDMI it to the TV.

No, I'm defending having cable because there is something I want to watch that's on cable.

As opposed to playing the noble poverty card and pretending I'm somehow smarter than the room because I'm not paying for cable and groveling about NASCAR being on cable.

ya got to remember, most of the media big shots on here aren't paying for it..their parents are.;)

If cable/sat is worth it to you then get it. If it's not, then don't. I don't care. 90%+ of US households think it's worth it. If you are in that small minority that don't then ... good for you. Do not care.

Just don't pretend to be surprised when media companies and sports leagues put stuff on cable. That's just the way the world works now. Fox bought the rights to Nascar to force people to get FS1 and FS2. NBC did the same to force people to get NBCSports. They aren't spending billions out of generosity. The financial model behind the huge rights fees requires the extra revenue from cable carriage fees. Nothing we say will change that now. Fox and NBC are just implementing their strategy.

Well said. I don't care if people don't have cable. It's the constant bitching about cable that annoys me. Hear the same thing around here with the Packers. The Milwaukee metro market is one of the lowest with cable penetration, I read somewhere years ago. Every time the GB Packers are on ESPN or NFL Network, it's constant bitching for a week.

you are not paying for nothing and you are upset about what others say who are?o_O go ahead and start paying your parents bill, and then you can complain about the constant bitching

I don't live with my parents. I'm in my mid-20s. I've been self-employed since I was 18. I pay a bigger percentage of taxes every year than you do. You're an old man who can't afford cable and resorts to pirating cable streams of sporting events on the internet and you accuse me of living with my parents? Maybe you should move in with your kids if you can't pay your bills.

good luck youngster. when you learn to get the most out of your fixed expenses, and not live paycheck to pay check, give me a call.

I have a business. Internet and cell phone are expenses I write off on 1040 Schedule C. I also started my own IRA with BMO Harris this year, so I don't end up like you when I'm your age.

Why don't you stop assuming things about me and we'll be better off? Have fun watching tomorrow's race in a tiny online streaming window with terrible resolution.

yu da man..I retired at 60 hahaha like I said good luck youngster. go out there and go get em.

Though if Cup goes to Road America my IRA contributions will definitely be a little lower. ha ha !

might be able to make this simple enough so it can be grasped..it isn't a matter of what I can get because I have the latest gismo or not, it is about motor racing for the good and popularity of the sport. They have a Golf channel..I believe it is available for just about every viewer, cable dish whatever. You can page down to figure 14 and see the viewer demographic age/number of viewers. Just Nascar..excluding other motorsports slaughters golf for viewers..and Golf has its own channel, AND it is on basic packages..check out figure 14 I think it is pretty accurate of viewing numbers.

But the cable companies have made it clear that they aren't going to offer a la cart cable because then everybody would just buy 5 channels for some pittance and they would go out of business. The CEO of DirecTV said at some conference that he sees his company as a boutique curator of entertainment, not just a dumb pipe like the water company or the electric company that brings you a utility service at the lowest price. The gazillion channels are here to stay, unfortunately.

I either go to school/work for 8 hours of the day, come home to make dinner, and maybe watch TV for less than an hour before I finish homework or a home project, then go to bed. Weekends involve more time for school work, friends, and completing errands. Paying for cable when I only watch TV roughly 30 mins a day is ridiculous.

cable billl is bad.......but cellphone/internet bill is ok ????
Having a means of communication i.e. mobile devices and internet are a necessity in this day & age. Sitting on your ass watching TV is not. Plus if you're smart, and have a phone with internet capability, you will not pay for an internet bill.

As opposed to playing the noble poverty card and pretending I'm somehow smarter than the room because I'm not paying for cable and groveling about NASCAR being on cable.
There is a difference between not being able to afford cable, and choosing not to be a sucker.

I don't know how that relates to what I said..I used the golf channel for an example of a channel that is a lower tier widely available channel. Some on here already are saying FS1 is lower tier on their systems. Right now with the demographics I posted..there should be a market for an all motorsports channel that is widely available. Just because fox decided to change their format, wasn't because it was failing, it wasn't making what they thought they could make going stick n ball mostly. I think there is an opportunity for a racing channel to come into being..FS1 ratings aren't much better than Speeds were, and I bet the racing they bought from nascar is going to be one of the bigger money makers. Plenty of other racing series to cover and racing news, programs to form a racing channel. Most of the existing programming that was on speed has been picked up by other smaller networks. Just like the fans/viewers have changed Nascar over the years, complaing in public forums and the various social media outlets about losing our racing channel is a good thing.

That I all agree with.

I can think of several channels I would pay for. Cable's gonna have to go la carte or start offering packages at much lower prices or go out of business. The only people who will buy cable in the future are sports fans.

what's your reasoning behind that Andy? You think the internet is a player. I know the movie area looks ripe, paying for the same endless rerun movies for years on cable is not good service. We have been renting dollar movies for years and not paying for the premium move tier.

Yes, I do think the internet is a player. Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu Pkus have more than just movies - between the three, they have just about every single show to ever air on television. I have Netflix through my Blu Ray player - $8/month - instant access to thousands of programs. DirecTV $40/month includes NBCSN, FS1, FS2, MAVTV, MSNBC and AJAM.

Cable companies will probably start charging for bandwidth but there's always going to be someone who sees the benefit of offering unlimited bandwidth for people who do a lot of streaming. Sprint and T-Mobile see the benefit of it on the cell phone side.

DirecTV's cheaper than most cable outlets. I know people paying $80-$150 for cable and don't get all the channels I get. But, unless your a sports fan, you're not going to pay $150 for cable when you can get Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime all for less than $30 total. Cable is going to have to change its business model or risk extension.

fox/nbc will find creative new ways ta monetize their new hi $$ nascar contracts.....
........as content providers........ way beyond just tv . just a matter a' time.

Hmmm, Bruton and Mulhern, not sure I should believe either of them. IF it's true I'm a big fan of the move. NBC/NBCSN will treat NASCAR well.

I wonder who NBC will have in the booth whenever they do come back. I certainly wouldn't mind if Bestwick moves over and I hope Wally D. comes back. I used to not like him but since he started doing IRL races, I've gotten to like him a lot.

I don't assume I know. Growing up in several trailer parks & all of my surrounding neighbors were huge NASCAR fans but only could watch half the season because we only had the rabbit ears. Otherwise we'd listen to it on the radio. Why do you think TV ratings are down? Theyre only down because alotta fans can only watch half the season. Hell, until I got to college I couldn't see races on ESPN & TNT. The people on this forum ain't the only NASCAR fans on the block ya know

I bet they have money for beer and smokes tho

I'm hoping for both as well, along with Ricky Craven.

This is true. If I had the same programming with Comcast as I have with DirecTV, I'd be paying around $40 a month more (regular prices, not deal prices).

ESPN is a lame duck and wants out. I say let them out if Fox and NBC are ready to run with it next year.

As I said, it's possible this move happens but not probable. If there are actually discussions underway, that in itself is unprecedented in sports.

I've been watching the football game and it's becoming apparent that NASCAR has a problem. They've promoted every sport tonight. They ran a two minute SportsCenter promotion and even had more hockey clips in the promo than NASCAR. They've promoted several sports on the air and during commercials - except for NASCAR. If NBC wants to take over next year and ESPN wants out, NASCAR should probably consider stepping in and making sure it happens at this point. If not, we're in for one very rough year next year.

The entire benefit of the sport being on ESPN is gone.

if i wanna buy one of a feller's many cars.........one i know he'd like ta sell..........
.....i sho ain't gonna go over an wash-n-polish it fer 'em ........afore i make him an offer . ha!

If the move to NBC does happen next season as rumored how is that really going to affect you?

ESPN has been great with NASCAR as far as I'm concerned. They have every single race that they are contracted for on one of their channels. If anything comes up, like last weekend, where there is a conflict they've got another source to broadcast on. As far as their coverage outside the race itself, I couldn't really give a crap. If they don't promote in on Sports Center or have NASCAR specialty shows, so what. I don't need them to catch up on the news. I get all of the news that I need on Twitter or on here. We are more up to date than any of those shows anyhow.

A move from ESPN to NBC is simply another set of numbers to push on my remote on Sunday and I still don't have to get off my a$$. That is, unless I need to get up and go over to my computer to bitch about it. We can simply all regurgitate the ESPN hate threads and substitute NBC in it's place. In the overall scheme of things nothing is really going to change for the avid NASCAR fan. The rest may have to lean how to use their television guide. o_O

This. I mean perception of Nascar may change as the Espn sheep supposdly don't care about other sports but the avid Nascar fan will find a way to watch. I'm sure NBC will have issues.. whether it be the broadcast, not talking about it blah blah. it's all extra noise.

I'm more worried about Nascar improving the quality of racing. I'm sorry but the truck series should not have better racing then the cup series.

I don't remember how NBC was or know how it will be, but of the current 3 broadcasters, I have the fewest complaints about ESPN.

I'm not celebrating their departure like y'all seem to be.
