From now on...all defenders should just slam down the receiver before the ball gets there! I mean...there wouldn't be a penalty because the pass would be uncatchable, right??

Following the game, Blakeman explained and defended his crew's decision, saying the original call was pass interference but that Gronkowski's distance from the ball rendered the penalty moot.
"So it was determined at that point in time that when the primary contact occurred on the tight end that the ball, in essence, was coming in underthrown and in essence it was [immediately] at that point intercepted at the front end of the end zone," Blakeman said. "So there was a determination that, in essence, uncatchability, that the ball was intercepted at or about the same time the primary contact against the receiver occurred."
I'm missing something here, I thought bearhugging an opposing player warranted a penalty no matter the circumstance but I am a little behind on the rule changes.
Even if you take the linebacker out Gronks own momentum was carrying him away from the ball. I honestly don't think he could have made a break for the ball and get there before the panthers DB. Therefore the ball was underthrown and intercepted. No penalty, good call.

So you can just run around the field bearhugging opposing players?
Defensive PI was out of the question IMO...but yeah, defensive holding is a possibility. I don't think that requires a ball to be catchable. That still doesn't make any sense to me, the quarterback throws the ball and the defensive players can start bearhugging the offensive players as long as they arent under the ball?
Thank you.Defensive PI was out of the question IMO...but yeah, defensive holding is a possibility. I don't think that requires a ball to be catchable.

As soon as the QB releases the ball, defensive holding can't be called. It then becomes pass interference. If the ref determines the ball is catchable, a flag is thrown. If the ref feels the ball would not have been caught no matter what, then the interference is not penalized. (Which is what happened last night.)

I don't care one way or the other about the win or that game, the video clip just caught my eye and I was confused and still am.holding can't be called after the ball has left the QBs hands. Sorry you feel it is wrong, but that is the rules according to the NFL. Sorry Panthers won that game fair and square under the NFL rules. I'd say that it is a "legit" win?

Good call then. No way was Gronk getting close to that ball.As soon as the QB releases the ball, defensive holding can't be called. It then becomes pass interference. So were the refs, since one threw a flag and another said "no penalty". Even they weren't 100% confident with the call.I don't care one way or the other about the win or that game, the video clip just caught my eye and I was confused and still am.
Yep.Anyone else like the Saints tonight, besides me?
