NFL 2013

From now on...all defenders should just slam down the receiver before the ball gets there! I mean...there wouldn't be a penalty because the pass would be uncatchable, right??

Yeah, just grab and hold all the receivers that way they can't catch the ball - then it's uncatchable......... what a freaking joke.

Following the game, Blakeman explained and defended his crew's decision, saying the original call was pass interference but that Gronkowski's distance from the ball rendered the penalty moot.

"So it was determined at that point in time that when the primary contact occurred on the tight end that the ball, in essence, was coming in underthrown and in essence it was [immediately] at that point intercepted at the front end of the end zone," Blakeman said. "So there was a determination that, in essence, uncatchability, that the ball was intercepted at or about the same time the primary contact against the receiver occurred."

Tough call...at least the Patriots will still run away with the AFC East.

NFL refs are the most inconsistent in all of sports. What is a pass interference one week doesn't get called the next. I've seen games where players get called for roughing the QB just by breathing on him, then games where a player drives his helmet into the QB's chest and gets no penalty.

Even if you take the linebacker out Gronks own momentum was carrying him away from the ball. I honestly don't think he could have made a break for the ball and get there before the panthers DB. Therefore the ball was underthrown and intercepted. No penalty, good call.

I'm missing something here, I thought bearhugging an opposing player warranted a penalty no matter the circumstance but I am a little behind on the rule changes.

depends if the ball is deemed catch-able or not by the offensive player. Which they ruled last night it wasn't. I agree with the ruling.

So you can just run around the field bearhugging opposing players?

No, rules are if the ball isn't in the air it is holding, however if the ball is in the air they have to call interference. They can call interference only if the ball is deemed catchable. So according to the ref, contact wasn't made with Gronk until the ball was in the air, in which case the ball was also deemed uncatchable (intercepted) by the ref which in case negated the interference call.

That still doesn't make any sense to me, the quarterback throws the ball and the defensive players can start bearhugging the offensive players as long as they arent under the ball?

Defensive PI was out of the question IMO...but yeah, defensive holding is a possibility. I don't think that requires a ball to be catchable.

As soon as the QB releases the ball, defensive holding can't be called. It then becomes pass interference. If the ref determines the ball is catchable, a flag is thrown. If the ref feels the ball would not have been caught no matter what, then the interference is not penalized. (Which is what happened last night.)

Thank you.

holding can't be called after the ball has left the QBs hands. Sorry you feel it is wrong, but that is the rules according to the NFL. Sorry Panthers won that game fair and square under the NFL rules. I'd say that it is a "legit" win?

I don't care one way or the other about the win or that game, the video clip just caught my eye and I was confused and still am.

Yeah the NFL rule book is probably worse than the Nascar rule book. I wouldn't want to be the ref, because you do have these rules where under one situation it is a penalty, where as another it isn't.

Good call then. No way was Gronk getting close to that ball.

It's funny that people think the Patriots got screwed by a rule that they don't agree with, but the Patriots got their first Super Bowl win as a direct result of the "tuck rule".

So were the refs, since one threw a flag and another said "no penalty". Even they weren't 100% confident with the call.

I felt the need to post this just because it reminded me of the current topic! I was playing madden 2012 and they were seriously called for roughing the passer on this play! Must have be the same refs that were reffing the Patriots game. It makes sense though! I mean, if my guy didn't nail the defender, he definitely would have had a late hit, so they may as well call it!

The Thursday Nighter (Steelers vs. Ravens) will be on NBC next week, following the two Thanksgiving Day games.

The '94 Houston Oilers hold the record for the biggest single-season tumble (from 12-4 in 1993 to 2-14 in 1994). The Falcons are threatening that record this year.

Looked like a good game! If only Cox had included NFL Network in this tv package instead of Fox Sports 1...
